Thanks A Latte
Would you like a free latte? If so, donate $5 or more to the United Way campaign and you will receive a gift card for one free latte at the Bookstore. Don't worry if you have already donated, you will still received a card. Dean Schaffer, along with the bookstore, are offering this as an extra incentive to give this year. It is the Dean's way of saying 'Thanks!' Don't forget to turn in your pledge forms to Scott Karaffa to receive your free latte and to be entered into the prize drawing.
Carpentry Project Groundbreaking
The First Ever College House Groundbreaking Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 13 at 3 pm on-site at 1804 20th Avenue South where Pat Shoenen's carpentry students are building a home for NeighborWorks Great Falls. Sheila Rice, Director of NeighborWorks; Joe Schaffer, Dean/CEO of MSU - Great Falls; Pat Schoenen, Program Director; Keith Nelson from Neighborworks; and a representative from the Great Falls Women in Construction Chapter will speak. You are invited to attend!
The carpentry program will use the house as on-the-job training for students in its Carpentry and Construction Trades program. Keith Nelson of NWGF will oversee the project; Pat Schoenen of MSU - Great Falls is in charge of the day-to-day work.
Beginning in September and throughout the school year, the students work on every phase of the home, from the foundation to the roof. The homes are sold to income qualified buyers after completion.
To qualify for a high school house, buyers must complete homebuyer education classes and qualify for a first mortgage from the lender. Buyers' annual income must fall below 80 percent of area median income for Cascade County. To find out more about how you can purchase a new NWGF home, please call NeighborWorks at 761-5861.
Trades Rodeo a HUGE Success!

Thank you to Judy Hay ,Pam Parsons and Jane Gregoire for allowing Mr. Senger and myself to bring our Grizzly Business students to attend the Vocational Roundin' Up on October 7th at the fair grounds.
WOW! What an opportunity for our 8th graders. This event was great and has made a life-long impact on these kids. I just cannot say thank you enough.  Pat sent a number of slides, including the one above, to show how involved his students were in the activities at the Rodeo.

Born in Great Falls, I grew up in Black Eagle, in the "shadow of the big stack," as we used to say, along with my nine brothers and sisters (yes, Mom and Dad were Catholic for a while, as well as Mom being Italian-that says it all, doesn't it?).  I started reading books in kindergarten or 1st grade and haven't stopped yet. In my younger years, I read only fiction, but I now find myself reading many more non-fiction books throughout the year on a number of topics-health, global warming, the Cold War, etc. One day, when I was twelve, I wrote my first song, and I'm still doing that, too. I've written over 75 folk songs over the years. I graduated from MSU-Bozeman with my Bachelor's degree in Secondary English Teaching in 2002 and with my Master's in 2004, when I moved back to Black Eagle with my son. Since then, I've been substitute teaching in the public schools, teaching two face-to-face classes five times a year for Park University on Malmstrom AFB, and now teaching the WRIT 101 classes online for MSU-Great Falls. In the meantime, I also work on creative non-fiction pieces for publication. IT
Bookstore Receives National Attention
From Nebraska Book Company
Years ago, when NBC representative Marie Eppens first started visiting the bookstore at the Montanta State University - Great Falls College of Technology (COT), there wasn't a used book on store shelves. Another textbook distributor was conducting a wholesale-only book buy from time to time. Eppens helped the then-store manager see the value in offering used books and in optimizing store operations with the NBC WinPRISM and PRISM retail management systems. Steve Halsted, who was then an assistant manager in his first bookstore job-was there for the transition to selling used books. Just four months after he joined the store, he became the textbook manager. Soon, he and his team had a front-row seat for a new era at the store. Today, Halsted is the MSU - Great Falls COT bookstore manager and leads a thriving store. Dubbed "The COTtage Bookstore," it's a hub of student activity on campus. Together, the bookstore team has found how important used books and a retail book buy can be for its bottom line. AAUW Used Book Sale Begins
Submitted by Jeri Pullum
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Used Book Sale begins Wednesday, Oct. 14, at noon on the third floor of the Great Falls Public Library. The sale continues Wednesday-Sundays for two weeks. Selections include fiction, romance, science fiction/fantasy, travel, history, political science, poetry, medical, health, science, religion, self-help, cookbooks, videos and DVDs, children's, decorating, crafts, hobbies, books on tape and CDs. Proceeds from the sale go for support for the public and college libraries, scholarships and the public schools' HANDS program.

Rare book lovers flock to the opening day sale hoping to bag a rare find from among the thousands of books offered. Others like to wait for the bargain days, which begin the second week. The selection is so large that many patrons return several times to search the stacks. Most books are priced at $1-$2 ($5 for nearly new). However, prices are cut in half beginning Wednesday, Oct. 21. And the best bargain is the sack sale, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24-25, when books are $2 per sack or $3 a box.

Sale hours are:
Wednesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 14-15 and 21-22, noon to 7 p.m.
Fridays, Oct. 16 and 23, noon to 5 p.m.
Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sundays, Oct. 18 and 25, 1 - 4 p.m.
