| McGee Earns Boiler's License
Submitted by Scott Karaffa
Cheryl McGee recently obtained her Montana State Low Pressure Boiler Engineers license. She attended a week long, 8 hours a day plus homework, class here in Great Falls presented by MSU Northern. Also, Cheryl put in many extra hours working with other certified boiler operators to learn the ins and out of different systems. She received the extra training at Lewis and Clark Elementary School and here at MSU-Great Falls under the watchful eye of Art England, who also holds a State Boiler Engineers license.
This certification is valued by the college because it allows Cheryl to assist and monitor the scheduled and preventative maintenance required on the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems throughout the building.
Congratulations, Cheryl, on a job well done! | |
Dental Hygiene Student Chapter Honored
From the Great Falls Tribune, July 7, 2009
The American Dental Hygienists' Association has named MSU-Great Falls College of Technology's Dental Hygiene Student Chapter as a recipient of the Student Member Community Service Award. The award recognizes outstanding student chapters of ADHA that have made a significant community contribution.
MSU-GF Dental Hygiene Student Chapter was honored for its sponsorship and participation in the "No Smile Left Behind" sealant day in March. The event was held in conjunction with the Cascade Community Health Fair and offered free dental screenings, sealants, fluoride application and oral health instruction to children. |
| Boys and Girls Club Visits Campus
Submitted by Natalie Nefzger
The Boys and Girls Club summer camp visited MSU-Great Falls last week. They were lots of fun and really gave me a chance to refine my tour language. The ages of these groups ranged from 5 years old to 11 and they were full of life and questions.
Giving these tours presented me with a great opportunity to remember that we can get caught up in our own language and forget that our campus guests have no idea what we are talking about and even be turned off by it. I remembered Judy Hays' approach to explaining welding to our seventh grade tour participants and borrowed that language during these visits. They loved the welding classroom and the idea of gluing two pieces of metal together.
These little people also loved seeing the library. You'd be surprised what a 5 year old can tell you about the library. Like "sometimes your mom gets mad when you can't find your book." They were very excited to see all the computers in the library and pool table in the "lunch room." They were very observant little folks and one pointed out a slide on the flat screen in the atrium as being a sign he had seen from his car. I knew right away he had seen one of our billboards. Wow, we've really made an impact!
All in all, these tours presented a good deal of positive learning for me and a small group of campers from the Boys and Girls Club. On a personal note, the highlight of the day for me was the hand holding. The younger groups of campers never walk outside with holding hands and that warmed my heart! It's not often that I get the chance to hold hands on a campus tour. |
Job Service Program to Help People Decide About College
Submitted by Judy Hay
Judy Hay, Leah Habel, and Natalie Nefzger have been working with the local Job Service to help them be prepared to answer questions about PELL and other financial aid issues and to talk with them about decision-making for going to college.
The Department of Labor and Industry is sending letters to all people in the state receiving unemployment benefits, encouraging them to think about education and training and letting them know that PELL grants have recently been increased. Over 1,800 letters will be sent to people in our area on Monday, July 20th. The Job Service will be their first point of contact.
What our campus will be prepared for is to work with people who receive the letters and think MSU-Great Falls is an option for them such that they have the information and support to make good educational decisions for themselves. The timing of this letter in regard to being ready to start classes this fall is not optimal, as it makes the timelines for getting financial aid set up, admission to the College, and registration for classes very condensed. Student Services staff are preparing for the possibility there may be a strong response to the letter from the state.
Toward that end, Natalie and the Student Services staff are putting together an information session or two to host letter recipients and their families and provide information about college attendance. The first information session will be on July 30 at 2:00 here on campus. There is a possibility that we may need some additional sections of some of our typical first semester courses, as well as a need for additional Compass testing sessions, STARs, etc. This may be one of those "all hands on deck" pleas as the number of individuals considering enrollment becomes more evident. Stay tuned! |
