Healthcare Forum 'Montana Talks Health'
Submitted by Gerry Jennings
If you would to see our broken health care system improved - get involved, come to a Healthcare Reform Forum at MSU - Great Falls on the evening of Monday, June 29 at 6:00 pm. We'll walk from the Target parking lot to the Forum leaving at 5:15 pm, but that's optional. You will have the opportunity to share health care experiences and your ideas to improve the system. This will be a state wide town meeting - a teleconference with groups meeting simultaneously in many Montana cities. We're trying to get as many people there as possible to show support for the impending reform bill in congress. Twitter Webinar
You are invited to attend a live webinar on July 8 from 11 am to noon in Room G107: "Twitter @ College: Tools & Tips To Utilize Tweets for Your Campus"
"Suddenly, all the world is a-Twitter!" says Newsweek.  Simple and powerful, Twitter can be an invaluable tool for higher education.  More and more colleges are creating Twitter accounts for admissions, athletics, alumni, departments & colleges, PR, news, general institution information and much, much more.  So how can you harness the power of this up and coming social media giant- with only 140 characters?
Contact Pam Parsons for further information.

Business Management Students Excel
Submitted by Marilyn Besich
This is the 20th year of the John Ruffato Business Plan competition. MSU - Great Falls has had an entry and many winners in 18 of those years.  In addition, this event is the 3rd oldest business plan competition in the nation! Prize money is usually between $25,000 and $30,0000.  This year the prize money was a little down....closer to $25,000---it has been a tough year for contributions. Our students are competing with MBA and BA/BS students from the U of M and other campuses. as well as other AAS students. There were 25 plans submitted this year.

The following MSU - Great Falls students were honored:
Chloe Zahara won $200 for being a semi-finalist.  Her plan was Desire--satisfaction in a handbag--a boutique specializing in upscale handbags, shoes and accessories.
Kristen Mansch won $200 for being a semi-finalist and $1,000 for 2nd place in the Lifestyle Division. The name of her plan was Ever After Elegance--a wedding and special event planning business.
Stephanie Potter's plan, Aloha Fitness and Health--a fitness/health club, won $200 for being a semi-finalist, $300 for the 3rd place Undergraduate Award in the High Growth Potential Division, and $1,000 for the prestigious Brandon Speth Award for Passion, Poise, and Charisma. This last award recognizes the individual student who exhibits the passion, poise, and charisma to successfully launch a new venture. Typically, this award goes to one of the presenters on the first or second place High Growth winning team. This year the judges selected Stephanie, and it was a complete and delightful surprise to all of us and the audience.

It is important to note our students, with only three semesters of college under their belts when they begin to write their plans, are very successfully competing against students with seven to nine semesters of college. And, in some cases the other campuses take multiple semesters to write the plans...we get one semester. Although we do not have as many graduates as many of the colleges in the competition, the students who complete the Business Management / Entrepreneurship program are well-prepared in this field as evidenced by their ability to succeed and endure this challenge. The accomplishments of our students are recognized by the judges, and they are not an easy bunch to please, as I think Chloe, Kristen, and Stephanie would be quick to tell you.
Congratulations to Chloe, Kristen and Stephanie - and to Marilyn Besich, Program Director!

Design Drafting offered at COT in Bozeman
A new Associate of Applied Science degree program at the College of Technology in Bozeman, Design Drafting Technology, will be offered starting fall semester 2009. Applications are now being accepted by the College located at 201 Culbertson Hall on the Montana State University campus.

Industry representatives from architectural, engineering, aerospace design, and GIS/mapping firms in the Bozeman area had input into the coursework required for the program. The industry representatives expressed willingness to develop and teach industry-specific courses in mechanical/aerospace drafting and in civil drafting.  They anticipate teaching students the specific CAD software they use in those industries and were also interested in an internship requirement.

"Computer Aided Drafting is a versatile skill, and those that do it well have a wealth of opportunity and options," says Dave Johnston, President of Impact Drafting & Design, Inc., in Bozeman.  "For us, having a local program that teaches potential employees the skills they'll learn in the Design Drafting program at the COT in Bozeman is a dream come true."

Design drafters translate the ideas and rough sketches of engineers and architects into technical drawings and plans used for manufacturing, aircraft, architecture, civil engineering and other industries. Upon completion of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Design Drafting Technology, students will have the qualifications necessary for entry level drafting jobs in the design drafting industry.

Fall semester classes begin on August 31, 2009. Contact the COT in Bozeman to complete an application and meet with an advisor to register for fall classes.  994-5536
