| Schaffer on Academic All-Star Selection Committee
From the Great Falls Tribune, May 3, 2009
Each of the 11 Academic All Stars picked by the selection committee had good academic marks and test scores, but they also overachieved in community activities - such as the creation of an environmental club at school - and various school organizations. "It makes me feel so optimistic about the kids in this state," said Paula Wilmot, retired communities editor for the Great Falls Tribune. She and Joe Schaffer, interim dean and CEO at Montana State University-Great Falls College of Technology, along with Tribune Managing Editor Dan Hollow, narrowed the field from the 51 nominees to 11 All Stars. "You want to pick three or four times as many (students) as you can," Schaffer said. "It's refreshing and yet somewhat frustrating. (They are) all incredibly strong, strong students." | |
