REACH Nursing Students
The first cohort of rural nursing students, who are attending classes in their local healthcare facility using the REACH Montana teleconference network, are completing their pre-nursing courses at MSU-Great Falls this Spring and willapply to the practical nursing program, and if accepted willbegin nursing classesfall 2009in their quest to become licensed practical nurses.

Students in Choteau, Conrad and Havre have been attending classes via teleconference and online technologies sinceSeptember 2007. The pilot program was made possible through a unique partnership between MSU-Great Falls, the Northcentral Montana Healthcare Alliance, Benefis Health Systems --which waived fees for using the teleconference system-and Teton Medical Center in Choteau, Pondera Medical Center in Conrad and Northern Montana Hospital in Havre. Although some travel to campus was still required for science labs, the students were able to reduce the required travel time significantly by attending classes in their local facilities. All of the students work at the healthcare facilties.

The nursing classes will continue the same setup. Local faculty will oversee clinical lab practice in the facility as much as possible. MSU-Great Falls has authorization from the State Board of Nursing to enroll up to 10 rural students in the pilot program.

Free HPV Vaccinations
Free Human Papilomavirus (HPV) vaccinations are being offered free of charge to MSU-Great Falls students with their IDs starting on Wednesday, March 11.  HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States, with about 6.2 million cases diagnosed annually. There are more than 100 strains of HPV, with over 30 types that can cause cervical cancer and genital warts. The HVP vaccine protests against four types of HPV that cause 70% of cervical cancer.

The Cascade County Health Department and MSU-Bozeman's Nursing students are partnering to provide the first two doses of the three-shot series free to women ages 19-26. The third shot can be obtained free of charge at the Cascade County Health Department. As with all vaccines, there are some risks.  Nurses will be on hand to discuss risks and benefits, and to provide more information.

For free vaccinations or for more information, please come to the Front Administrative Office area across the hall from the Outreach office between 8:30 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, March 11.  The next vaccination clinic will be scheduled soon.
Public Lecture - Learning Science as it is Practiced
This lecture is on Monday, March 9 at 7:30 pm in Heritage Hall by Dr. Nitin Baliga and is presented by the McLaughlin Research Institute. There is no admission charge, but an RSVP to admin@mri.montana.edu or 406.454.6044 would be appreciated. Below is an description of the lecture.

Recent advances in experimental practice, accompanying computational techniques and systems thinking, have advanced biological inquiry. However, the practice of today's biology does not resemble how biology is taught in today's high schools. The Baliga Research Group at the Institute for Systems Biology is using today's practices to launch classroom activities that promote conceptual development of standards based instructional outcomes for students as a potential solution to this mismatch.

Their first module, Ecological Networks, began its field testing in the Bellevue School District in 2004. In 2007, it was certified by WA State LASER (Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform) as exemplary materials according to their rigorous guidelines. Since then, it has been used in classrooms throughout the state and continues to successfully teach key components of systems biology and ecology.
