Skilled Trades Fair
Get out your hard hat and your Carhartts, it's time for the 3rd Annual Skilled Trades Career Fair on February 24 in Heritage Hall. MSU - Great Falls will be hosting all the local high schools and general public to help them see the many career opportunities available in the skilled trades. Currently, we have around 300 committed students planning to attend and about 30 vendors for them to meet and gain insight into potential careers. If you'd like to stop by that day between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, please do. You can say hi to folks form Sletten Construction or pick up a free pen from Liberty Electric. Best of all, you can help inspire a young student to think beyond high school and consider a skilled trade. It promises to be a great day! |
College Goal Sunday - Huge Success
Thank you to all that volunteered to help with this year's College Goal Sunday. We had 13 volunteers this year to help accommodate the 56 FAFSA filers and family members. Our numbers were down quite a bit this year. (we had 80 filers in 2008) The date was much later than normal, and with March 1st right around the corner, we think that many students already have filed on their own. Nevertheless, our help was greatly appreciated by those that attended and the comments were all very positive. We look forward to hosting our 5th year next February! | |
A Lunch with Greg Mortenson
Submitted by Heather Palermo
On February 23, I had the privilege of having lunch with Greg Mortenson, co-author of Three Cups of Tea: One's Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . Once School at a Time. I am a member of City's Advisory Commission on International Relationships (ACIR), and we were one of the partners to bring Greg Mortenson to Great Falls to speak. As part of the day, we organized a small lunch with our members. In listening to Mr. Mortenson speak, I could hear the passion of helping people in Afganistan and around the world. One of the items he spoke about struck me a bit more than other things he said. In a discussion on culture, and he noted in the schools his group has established the elders come in a couple times a week to teach the students about their heritage, folklore, and history. It made me realize Mr. Mortenson understands the students culture and how important it is to pass on to another generation. Listening him to him talk at lunch, just made me more excited to attend his lecture this evening. |

Dental Reception a Success! Submitted by Kim Woloszyn
Thanks to all who assisted in making the Dental Social such a success. We will look forward to having more high school students attend next year. I know the pre-dental students I talked with enjoyed the social and you could sense the excitement they were feeling when talking to existing students and actually realize being in the Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene program can be a reality. Great retention for students experiencing the challenge of taking those difficult prerequisites. Thanks you especially to Lanni, Natalie, Melanie, Pam, and Judy for helping make this happen and to all who chipped in (no pun intended) to supply the chips and cookies to supplement the funds for the snacks and drinks. A special thank you to Linda for the formulation of the door prizes and the beautiful set up and decorations. Like Melanie said, it was great to hear from a student, "Thank you, it was the best social I have ever attended." |
| Great Falls Public Schools Student Art on Display
Student art from across the city is on display throughout campus. Grayce Holzheimer, Art Faculty, will announce the date and time of a reception for these talented students shortly. |
Auto Body Graduates Work on Royal Aircraft
It took AvMax nearly three weeks to complete the exterior paint job on a personal aircraft for the King of Dubai. AvMax has hired a number of our Auto Body Repair and Refinishing graduates who were involved in the project. The Saturday, February 21st article in the Tribune mentioned that Michael E. Luney, Dubai Air Wing manager for exterior and interior, was on hand for the complete process. Among those watching the work was Michael E. Luney, Dubai Air Wing manager for exterior and interior. The photo to the left is a past Auto Body student working at AvMax.
From the Tribune article:
He said he was nervous when he arrived in Great Falls and met the young team of painters, since many of them came from local auto body shops in Great Falls and from the auto body class at Montana State University-Great Falls College of Technology. "I thought I was going to have problems," he said. Luney was pleasantly surprised to find the team to be skilled and willing to learn. He said the finished product was as good as any he has seen, adding Dubai gets work done in Canada and England.
