Dental Assisting News
Submitted by Robin Williams
The Dental Assisting program reaccreditation was approved without reporting requirements. Special thanks to Jodi Howard, Patty Laird, the Dental Hygiene Faculty, work studies Carissa Allen and Lisa Bache, and all of the DA students for the help they gave to Carmen Perry and me in the process. We couldn't have done it without them.

Also, the DA students are busy with Kindergarten Brush-ins this month also. As they have done in the past, students go out to area kindergarten classrooms with the Oral Health Educator for CCHD and provide oral hygiene instruction and share nutrition tips with the children. On February 23 and 24, the students will be making presentations to area preschoolers at the public library and Dudley the Dinosaur has agreed to join them.
Interior Design News
Julie Myers, Interior Design Program Director, Melanie Guttormson (2004), Kitchen & Bath adjunct instructor and 2008 graduate Sierra McClain attended the National Kitchen and Bath Association Regional conference in San Diego January 23-25.  The conference was a very interesting training and planning session for executive board members from 24 chapters from the northwest, mountain and southwest regions including Alaska and Hawaii.

Melanie is the secretary for the Big Sky chapter, Julie is the VP of Academic Relations, and Sierra is the newly-selected VP of Communications and Technology. Sierra and Melanie both agreed that volunteering for organizations in your field of work has great benefits, such as staying at the San Diego Hilton Resort in January!
Health Science Career Fair

The Health Science Career Fair held on February 4 was a wonderful success due to the hard work of Susan Cooper, Health Sciences Faculty, and Natalie Nefzger, Recruiter, and their partners at Great Falls Public Schools. There were 45 healthcare providers and healthcare faculty and students participating at 23 tables. Each presenter provided hands-on activities for the approximately 236 students who attended from 12 area high schools.

Benefis Healthcare's EKG machine was extremely popular as students could use the scanner to 'read' the activity of their friends' hearts. The Peak offered physical fitness tests. Gateway Recovery allowed students to experience 'Beer Goggles' that simulate intoxication - students were amazed at their loss of coordination and function. Our Health Sciences faculty and students were extremely involved with this event and found interactions with visiting highStudent at Health Fair 2009 school students gratifying. Natalie reported that there were a good number of students who expressed interest in enrolling in a healthcare program at MSUGF.  The Army recruiter was present to discuss all the healthcare professions in the military. Health professional organizations involved were Benefis, Big Sky Animal Center, Gateway Recovery Center, Centene, PEAK, American Red Cross, Clark's Orthopedic and Medical Equipment, Malmstrom Air Force Base, U.S. Army Recruiter, and Great Falls Clinic.

A special thank you to employees who contributed to the CollegeAID fund. Your generosity made this event happen!

Legislative Forum
The third of six Community Legislative Forums is on February 12 at 7 am in B133. The forums are a chance to learn about the latest developments of the 2009 legislative session and visit face-to-face with area legislators to discuss the issues affecting our area. We are considering changing the date/time of future Forums to accommodate the schedules of our legislators. Call Tom Figarelle at 771-4412 for further information.
North Middle School Parent Night
Submitted by Natalie Nefzger
Natalie Nefzger, Judy Hay, Courtney Johnsrud, and Dana Freshly will be attending Middle School parent night at North Middle School with information for families to guide their students during their high school academic career. Our goal is to offer information about college credit and other career-related options for their students when they get to high school, so they can use their time wisely. We want students to be informed about postsecondary options, as well as apprenticeships and other paths to college or careers.

We hope to emphasize the importance of high school curriculum and how it relates to the future and life beyond high school. Right now, we are drafting a simple document that will help students see how they can make the best use of their time in high school. For example, students need to be aware of dual credit opportunities and the importance of meeting regularly with their guidance counselor. We hope it will be an evening for families to have exposure to college and build an awareness of how they can prepare while still in high school.
Community Poetry Reading
Come to Hasting's on Thursday, February 12 at 7 pm to enjoy live poetry. The second Thursday of every month is the Community Poetry Reading. This is open to everyone - to read poetry or just sit back and listen.
