Financial Aid Night for Great Falls High
Article Submitted by Leah Habel
On Tuesday, December 3 there was Financial Aid Night for Great Falls High which was hosted at MSU-GF.  Leah and her team did the financial aid presentation on behalf of MASFAA (Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators).  There were over 141 attendees, which is a record. Leah was also interviewed on KRTV.
Spring Semester Recruitment & Marketing
College Relations is busy wrapping up the recruitment and marketing efforts for spring semester. Watch and listen for MSU - Great Falls publicity. There will be a new MSU-GF billboard up shortly located by the Fast Car Wash near Walmart. Sandwich boards urging potential students to 'Apply Today' have been redesigned and will be placed on motel properties around Great Falls. Listen for new radio ads on stations frequented by our target audiences: K99, 94.5, Q106 and 104.1. An insert featuring CIT Networking programs will appear in the Tribune on Sunday, December 14. And, lastly, Melanie Paul and our workstudy, Sheila, are delivering our spring schedule to various locations around town. Our spring semester enrollment looks good compared to this time last year - a reflection of the good work being done on campus on retention, recruitment, and spreading the word about the great opportunities available at MSU - Great Falls.
Computer Graphic Design Displays
Computer Graphic Design students are winding down the semester and have been working hard on their projects. There are some interesting cartoons and great designs on display in South Court.  If you haven't already seen them, stop by and take a look. On December 16 from 5:30 - 7:10 pm, the students will be presenting their final projects "Branding Themselves" and invite you to join them.
A Virtual Great Folks Award

Dr. Robert Altamura teaches online Geology courses with us from his home in Pennsylvania.  He's presenting an ITC audio conference on December 16 at noon titled Teaching Geology Online - Including Labs! Dr. Altamura designed this course a couple years ago as a part of the online core course development teams with funding provided by Tom Gibson's state-wide (OCHE) Distance Ed grants.  The course has been a great addition to our online core and Dr. Altamura has done a fabulous job in creating and offering the course for us.  Please join me in congratulating him on being chosen to deliver this presentation and make time and arrangements to attend the session if you can.  If anyone is interested in attending, let me know and we'll coordinate a room on campus to connect to the call and presentation.

A & P A & P Students Get 'Inside Look'
Nearly ninety students enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology classes gathered for a fun night designed to give students an inside look at various health science programs. Senior students and faculty representing Surgical Technology, Respiratory Care, Practical Nursing, and Emergency Medical Services provided hands-on activities and scenarios to demonstrate the practical application of information learned in their Anatomy & Physiology classes.

It was a unique opportunity for A&P students to meet and interact with advanced students in various programs. Many took advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about everything from the demands and expectations of the program to tips on successful study strategies.
Pictured above are faculty members Tammy Filliator, Cherie McKeever and Larry Myers.
Emergency News
Tom Cole is redesigning the evacuation and safety maps to reflect the additions to the College. Some evacuation routes have changed for exisiting classrooms and offices. Watch for them to posted around the building. A training in lockdown procedures was held on Wednesday, December 3. Dave Houck of Great Falls Public Schools is working with police officer, Mike Stimac, on a city-wide emergency plan for schools. The College Emergency Planning Team has assigned letters to identify each of our entrances and will sign them in a consistent manner with area schools to aid police and other emergency personnel. Subscriptions to the voluntary MSUGF Alert immediate notification system are steadily increasing. You are strongly urged to subscribe - see our home page for a subscription link to this service.
SEAP Tree
Submitted by ASMSUGFCOT
The Student Goverment's SEAP Committee asks for you help.  We are asking that you choose a tag from the Children's List to make a child's wish come true. The small Giving Tree is outside the bookstore.  Keep checking as new wishes will be added as they are received. The tags are for children only. The committee thanks you for your caring spirit.

In October 1987, the Associated Student Senate approved the creation of the Student Emergency Assistance Program. This committee's goal is to provide emergency assistance to students and to aid them in contacting other resources in the Great Falls area. The main purpose is to prevent students from dropping out of school because of temporary financial difficulties.
AmeriCorps Education Award
In only two years of participation, membership in the Americorps Education Award program has more than doubled. For fall 2008, 46 members have enrolled and are actively participating, potentially garnering over $60,000 in education awards that can be used to pay school loans or future tuition. Students must account for hours spent in an area of community service to receive the award.
Mary NicholsonOutreach Faculty Recognized...Mary Nicholson

Mary Nicholson has been involved with computers since 1984 when Cascade Public Schools got its first Apple II and she was working there as Assistant Librarian. No one knew what to do with it.  Deciding this was the way of the future, she began teaching herself what could be done on a computer.

Since then, Mary has taken many classes on applications and networking. She sold computers for ten years and was office manager of a computer store; taught computer classes-Keyboarding, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet, Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, Photo Deluxe, Pagemaker, Quark, Publisher, Scanning, Digital Photography, Clarisworks, Mac OS and Windows; worked as a computer technician for Cascade and Great Falls school districts; was a network manager for two local businesses; and now being self-employed, she does one-on-one training, support, and teaches seminars and workshops. She also does design, basic web building, and support for Turning Point Productions.

Mary attended college at Winona, Minnesota and graduated from Great Falls Business College. She is continually upgrading her education with continuing education classes and seminars.

Is Your .ppt Effective?
From Wylie's Writing Tips, 12/3/08
Some presentation writers would happily cram the 100-page "Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008" (that's the $700 billion bailout plan to you and me) on a slide and expect their audience members to read it.

Instead, speaker Chuc Barnes suggests, limit your slide to:
*      Six lines including the title
*      40 characters per line
*      One-syllable words where possible
Another way to think about it, according to Peppercom's Ted Birkahn, is to celebrate "the joy of six." That is, use a maximum of:
*      Six points per slide
*      Six words per point
