News from MSU - Great Falls
Your Community College!
January 5, 2009
Greetings!
Faculty are back on campus today for Faculty Orientation and Advising. January 14 is the first day of spring semester!
We are off to a good start for 2009! On January 8 we will welcome 300 high school students for College in a Day. On Friday, January 9, new students will have the opportunity to meet faculty in their area of study for lunch. Our first interactive, televised Community Legislative Forum is at 7 am on January 15 in B133. Come to listen and exchange ideas with our Great Falls delegation.
Montana University System representatives will give their first presentation to the Joint Appropriations Subcommittee on Education on January 21-23 in Helena. Dean Joe Schaffer will be on hand to answer questions of the Committee. The Committee will also hear public comment.
The first of five U to You speakers hosted by the MSU and UM Alumni groups begins on January 29 at 7 pm in Heritage Hall. Each year, the Great Falls' U to You Committee selects 2 professors from each University  to present an enlightening and/or entertaining lecture. This year, in addition to the 4 professors, award-winning author of Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson, will present a lecture on his work in Pakistan. We will have the full schedule shortly to share with you.
Happy New Year!

Dr. PaulauskisDr. Paulauskis receives FAARC Award
On December 13, 2008 Dr. Greg Paulauskis received the Fellow of the American Association of Respiratory Care (FAARC) award in recognition of his significant, sustained contributions to the profession. The AARC Fellowship Program was established in 1998 and brings recognition to AARC members who have reached a level of distinction in the professional practice of Respiratory Car. Each year, stellar professionals are chosen from among the AARC membership to receive the honorary title of AARC Fellow. Congratulations, Greg!
New Bookstore Cashier
Barb TowneBarbara Towne has joined the COTtage Bookstore crew. Barb was raised in Moccasin, Montana and graduated from Hobson High School. She earned a degree in elementary education from Easter Montana College - now MSU Billings.  She worked at Barnes & Noble until August 2005, when she married her husband, Mike Towne, a sports writer for the Great Falls Tribune.  She has 2 sons, Calvin, age 24 and Kevin, age 22.  She and Mike have 3 cats Jazzy, Sassee, and Chyna.  When not working Barb enjoys going to sporting events and traveling with her husband, she also enjoys cooking and reading. Welcome, Barb!
Faculty Senate Chartered
On December 19, the Charter for the Faculty Senate was signed by Dean Joe Schaffer, Dr. Heidi Pasek, Bruce Gottwig, and Leonard Bates. The Charter is an agreement between the Administration of the College and the Faculty recognizing the establishment of the Faculty Senate as the 'voice of the Faculty as an advisory and consultative body to the Dean and to the Board of Regents on all matters that may affect the attainment of the College's educational objectives.' A framed copy of the Charter will be hung in a prominent location.
Help Desk Changes
EJ Suek now supervises the HelpDesk and the student workers who are employed there. He takes over this responsibility from Ryan Schrenk, who did the initial work to set up this valuable campus service. Ryan has done an impressive job of maintaining high-quality technical and information services through our HelpDesk. Thank you to Ryan and welcome to EJ as he comes on board. If you have any questions or concerns please refer them to EJ.

College in a Day
About 300 students from 22 high schools will be spending the morning on Campus on Thursday January 8, 2009 for the 11th annual College in a Day. Each participating student will attend three career sessions of his or her choice beginning at 10:10 am and concluding at 12:10 pm.  College in a Day offers information on exciting careers in business and healthcare as well as transfer, distance learning, and financial aid options. MSU-Great Falls developed 25 career exploration workshops for students to select from.
Please watch for the students when they change sessions during the morning.  They may be wandering (possibly lost), so please help them find their way. The sessions run from 10:10-10:40, 10:50-11:20, and 11:30-12:10.
Community Legislative Forums
You are invited to learn about the latest developments of the 2009 legislative session and visit with area legislators in informal discussions concerning the issues affecting our region. Forums will be held twice a month throughout the Session with the first one being held at 7 am on January 15th. They are free and open to the public. The remaining dates are: Jan 29, Feb 12, Feb 26, Mar 12 and Mar 26. If you have questions, contact Pam Parsons or Tom Figarelle.
Book Buyback

The bookstore will be open extended hours for registration: Jan. 5 - 14.
Monday - Thursday: 7:30 - 6:00pm
Friday - 7:30 - 5:00pm
Sunday the 11th & 18th - 7:30 -5:00pm
Joe_JodiOctober & November Great Folks Award Winners
Jodi Howard was the winner of the Great Folks Award in October.  Jodi was recognized for her service, kindness, and laughter - she goes the extra mile for all of the programs and people in Health Sciences.  Her rapport with the students is remarkable.  She affectionately calls them "dudes" and has a way of visiting and talking to them that no one else can pull off.  She is a great asset for MSU - Great Falls.  She knows everything (or she will find the answer).  This award was present to Jodi by Cheri Calsetta.

Joe_Nursing FacultyCheryl Alt, Patti Kercher, and Cindy Schultz were the winners for the Great Folks Award in November.  They were recognized for their excellence in teaching.  All of the 2008 Nursing graduates passed the NCLEX on their 1st attempt! This award was presented to them by Dr. Greg Paulauskis.
