News from MSU - Great Falls
Your Community College!
December 1, 2008
Greetings!

This is the time of the year when the bank is becoming alarmingly low, the blood bank. This is the season of goodwill, good cheer, families, and friends.  People forget or do not have time to make deposits into the bank.  But surgeries are needed, emergencies occur, and withdrawals are made from the bank on a continuous basis. But YOU can make a difference; YOU can make a direct deposit into the bank, right here at MSU-Great Falls - College of Technology.

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS WILL BE HAVING A BLOOD DRIVE ON December 2, FROM 11:30 AM TO 3:30 PM IN HERITAGE HALL. And, as an extra bonus, YOU can sign up for a particular time and just walk in, lie down, sleep or dream, and give the most precious of all gifts at this time of year, and get a cookie!  The sign-up sheet is on the door of the Student Government office & Walk-ins are also accepted.

Thank you for your generosity!

Literary Guild Silent Auction
The MSU - Great Falls Literary Guild is hosting its third annual fundraising silent auction. The auction will be held in the campus library from December 1 - 5.  Items will be on display all week with bidding closing at 5 pm on Friday.  The proceeds from the silent auction are used to print and distribute the Guild's annual nationally-circulated literary journal, MO: Writing from the River.
Distance Learning Team to Present at Conference
Deb Newton has been selected to offer two of the 58 concurrent sessions at eLearning 2009 in Portland, OR, on February 21 - 24. Over 130 proposals were received by the selection committee. Her first presentation will be with Ryan Schrenk on the online advising course she and Lynn Ward designed, refined and used for over a year.  Lynn and Ryan did an audio conference on this through ITC in September and had over 35 schools attend with several following up multiple times by email and/or phone. Ryan and Deb expect a full house with lots of Q & A. Deb's second presentation will focus on tenure for online faculty. Check out the conference highlights at their offical website: http://www.itcnetwork.org/.

Art Work Displayed in Cafeteria
Article Submitted by Grayce Holzheimer
You may have noticed the bold designs and artwork displayed in the cafeteria this past month. It is the work of our own Tom Cole from IT here at MSU-Great Falls. Tom stated, "I have always been interested in art and technology.  As I do not have very good eye-hand coordination, I use a computer and my laser engraver to help to make up for my shortcomings." Please let Tom how much you have enjoyed his artwork this past month, as it will be coming down soon to be replaced by the Fall 08 Student Art Show.  Thank you, Tom for exhibiting your artwork in the cafeteria for the campus community! If you know of anyone here on campus who would like to display their art in the cafeteria between student art shows, please contact Grayce Holzheimer, MSU-Great Falls COT Art Faculty at 771-4372.
Common Course Numbering
The Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE) has approved and released the common course numbering for five disciplines as of November 25, 2008. The purpose of the project is to ensure transferability of courses between colleges within the Montana University System. They will go into effect on the MSU-Great Falls COT campus Summer 2009.   They are available at two places off the main website (www.msugf.edu):

1- under Academics, then Advising/Planning (last item under the Advising Documents)

2 - under Faculty, then Advising/Planning (last item under the Advising Documents)

The OCHE website for the Common Course Numbering Transfer Guide is http://msudw.msu.montana.edu:9020/wfed/owa/musxfer.p_CCN_MAIN
MSUGF AlertMSUGF Alert
If you have not signed up for MSUGF Alert, please do so at your earliest convenience. It is the one way we have to notify all subscribers IMMEDIATELY of emergencies on campus. If we were to have a situation on campus such as a shooter, as some other campuses have had, this is the one way we have to notify you of an immediate lockdown. We will also use it in case there is a problem on campus that causes the campus to be closed and classes cancelled, for example, a power outage.

Sign up for MSUGF Alert - instant text messaging for critical emergency alert information. It is the fastest way the College has to notify you of emergencies that affect your personal safety. Since nearly everyone has a cell phone, this type of notification is very effective and is being used effectively on many other campuses. It is 100% spam-free. It will not be used by the College for any notices EXCEPT emergencies. It is FREE and voluntary. You may subscribe on our website home page. Detailed information is available in Student Central and at the HelpDesks.
