National Medical Assistant Week
National Medical Assistant Week (AAMA) is October 19-25.  Program Director Cheri Calsetta notes her new program presently has 16 students and interest continues to be strong.  Currently, Cheri is in Chicago for the American Association of Medical Assistants National Convention.  She will be attending accreditation workshops and specialized educator training.

Cheri Calsetta and Susan Cooper, Health Sciences faculty, recently did a presentation to the Centerville Elementary After-School students. They were invited by AmeriCorps worker Brian Christiansen who organizes the daily programs to enrich the lives of students through Health Rocks!!  The after school program provides a safe and welcoming place for the children with exercise, playtime, healthy snacks, Health Rocks presentations by community members and then 45 minutes of supervised homework help. Cheri presented health, hygiene, and hand-washing tips.  The Cottage Bookstore provided stuffed germs for the kids to relate to.  Susan, a nutrition professional, did a fun, interactive nutrition/food game and presented the new food pyramid.  It was a lot of fun and they received great comments from the kids.
First Annual MSUGF Winter Coat Exchange
On October 20-31 in the Atrium, bring your extra coats, hats, other warm outdoor items in and leave them or exchange them for something that will work better for you!  Warm clothes can be dropped off in Student Central if you bring them in this week, or you can take them to the exchange site anytime during the two weeks of the exchange.  There will be an area set up directly in back of the staircase in the Atrium. Any leftover items will be donated to the Rescue Mission by request of our students. So, clean out those closets and trunks and help make someone else's winter a little warmer!
MDHA Annual Session Held In Great Falls
Gail Staples was installed as the new President of the Montana Dental Hygienist's Association during the Annual Session held in Great Falls on September 26. It was the first time Great Falls has been the host city for the MDHA Annual Session!

The planning committee was outstanding. Senior students presented their poster clinics and the first three places were awarded their own advanced instrument kits from the CEO, Fred Van De Pere of PDT dental instruments out of Missoula Montana.

Winning students were:
1st place: Tamara McKeeman & Ann Marie Magill (Baby Teeth are Worth More than Spare Change: stem cells acquired from baby teeth)
2nd place: Lisa Howell & Mindy Zinglewicz (Significance of Patients undergoing Oral Cancer Therapy: Dental Providers are an important component of the oncology team)
3rd place: Diedri Durocher & Kristi Wadsworth (Mandatory Reporting of suspected child or elder abuse)

Restoration Workforce Workshop
Article Submitted by Michael Woodhead
Michael Woodhead attended a worksop in Butte a few weeks ago on "Filling a Void: Growing Montana's Restoration Workforce."  The workshop included discussion on abandoned mines, degraded roadways, and unhealthy forests and how they pose an increasing threat to the lands and waters of Montana.  Restoring damaged landscapes creates new opportunities for businesses, healthy animal and plant communities, and a safer environment as well as good jobs in a variety of fields for Montanans with the right training and education.

One of the workshops he attended centered on this theme.   The one-day workshop identified the training and educational opportunities students, workers, and professionals will need to thrive in a restoration economy.  It examined how training programs, school curricula, and classes can better prepare workers to compete in the restoration workforce.
