Book lovers, collectors, hobbyists, casual readers and serious students all can find something at the annual AAUW book sale, Wednesdays-Sundays, from Oct. 15-26, on the third floor of the Great Falls Public Library. The book sale is the association's main fundraising event. Proceeds from the sale go to scholarships (one is awarded to an MSU-GF student annually) and to support community libraries and other organizations that promote education, including the MSU-Great Falls library. The hours of the sale will be: Wed-Thurs. noon- 7 pm; Fri. noon to 5 pm; Sat. 11 am-5 pm; Sun. 1-4 pm.

The collection includes general fiction, romance, science, poetry, philosophy, psychology, sociology, cookbooks, crafts, hobbies, sports, business, economics, history, political science, children's, phonograph records, DVDs, CDs, and more. Books are priced according to whether they are hardback or paperback. Collectors are attracted to the auction (conducted the first week) for the chance to buy rare or antique books. Bargain hunters love the final days when books are sold by the sackfull.

 Benefis Awards Two Memorial Scholarships
Benefis Healthcare Foundation awarded Yuliya Christensen of Great Falls and Kristen Soderbeck of Bozeman with the Terry L. Jackson, M.D. Memorial Scholarship.

Paula Jackson established a scholarship endowment fund with Benefis Healthcare Foundation to honor her late husband, Dr. Terry L. Jackson. Jackson was a physician who specialized in pain management, physical medicine and rehabilitation. He practiced in Great Falls for 11 years and served as director of rehabilitation at Columbus Hospital. It was his wish to establish a scholarship fund to assist students pursuing careers in medicine and related fields. To continue his legacy of helping patients rehabilitate after injury or illness, Paula Jackson chose to provide scholarships to students in the physical therapist assistant program at MSU-Great Falls College of Technology. This new program trains assistants who work directly with patients under the direction of a physical therapist. Christensen and Soderbeck will complete the program in July 2009.

Two scholarships are awarded annually. The application deadline is Aug. 1. Applicants must have received formal acceptance in the physical therapist assistant program at MSU-Great Falls. For further information contact Andrea Johnson at MSU-Great Falls at 771-5134 or Benefis Healthcare Foundation at
455-5840.
Wind Consultant
Article Submitted by Jeri Pullum
Sean Micken of Western Community Energy was on campus Monday, Oct. 6, for a site visit to assess the feasibility of MSU-Great Fall's plan to place a wind turbine south of the building.  Although much smaller than a commercial model, the turbine -- most likely similar in size to the one installed at Cascade County's shop complex -- should be able to substantially reduce electricity costs in the new Construction and Industrial Trades Building. Western Community's study will evaluate the available wind, possible sites and payback period, and recommend turbines suited to the college's needs. The turbine also could be for instruction if MSU-Great Falls develops a wind technician program. If the study determines a turbine is feasible, the next steps will be to seek approval from the Board of Regents, request proposals from turbine suppliers and contract for delivery and installation. If all goes well, MSU-Great Falls may have a turbine in place this summer.

It's time to pledge to give back to your community and state, supporting causes you care about. Through a payroll contribution or a one-time gift, you may designate your donation to groups in Montana Shares working to meet immediate needs in our communities and also to find long-term solutions related to issues concerning all Montanans.  They promote, protect and preserve Montana's human, animal, cultural and natural resources.

Your choices include 38 nonprofits in Montana, including the Great Falls Community Food Bank, Student Assistance Foundation (SAF), Missouri River Dance Co., MT 4-H Foundation, MT Spay Neuter Task Force, MT Wilderness Association, MT Meth Project, and MT Mental Health Association to name a few.  See Kimberly at the SAF office on campus for more info.

Montana Shares materials were distributed and are online at www.montanashares.org, where you can also make a secure online donation today. When you give, you feel good and lives and communities are improved.   Turn in your pledge form to Melanie Houge by Thursday.  Thank you.

ITGrayce Holzheimer featured in Urban Art Projects
Urban Art Project's fall art installation features MSU - Great Falls Artist and Art faculty Grayce Holzheimer.

Holzheimers' exhibit is titled; "Disappearing Act, a Requiem for Birds" and is a reflection of her interest in birds and the recent decline due to habitat fragmentation and increasing global warming. For instance, the Rufus Hummingbird's population has fallen 58 percent due to logging and development in its breeding range! Loss has been a theme with Holzheimer, since recent surgeries have limited movement in her arms due to nerve damage. She has since learned to write and paint "right" handed and is learning to cope with her lack of strength by painting instead of practicing sculpture.

The exhibit will include many other Great Falls artists, including art instructors who have taught at the College. The Tribune states; "The exhibit promises an interesting variety of media to challenge and delight viewers as they walk or drive by the building at any time day or night." The exhibit is up for three months, drive by and check it out.
