October is Physical Therapy Month!
Article Submitted by Andrea Johnson
The current Physical Therapist Assistant students (SPTAs) will be busy in October celebrating Physical Therapy Month and studying.  The twelve formal students will be involved in making displays for a class project which can be viewed in the South Court area during the month of October.  Students will work on these projects in four groups of three students.  Also, the SPTAs will be involved in a service-learning project with Afterschool Program Partnering in Centerville on October 23.  STPAs will be working with K-6 grades presenting information and performing activities with the students to promote fitness, exercise, and overall health.

We encourage any pre-PTA students to be involved in the PTA Club as the purpose of the club is to allow current and pre-students to interact.  Please call Andrea Johnson, MS, PT at 771.5134 or stop by A214 for more information.

Kudos! Dr. Ruthann Knudson
Article Submitted by Kim Schrenk
Dr. Ruthann Knudson, adjunct faculty in the Social Sciences Department at MSU-Great Falls (and affiliate faculty in the Department of Sociology-Anthropology at MSU-Bozeman), will be making a presentation on 'James Allen, Oblique Flaking, and Artisans' at the George C. Frison and Plains Archaeology symposium at the 66th annual Plains Anthropological Conference, in Laramie, Wyoming on October 3. Dr. Knudson will be discussing the 8400-year-old James Allen site in Wyoming in the context of comparable Northern-to-Southern Plains sites. She is particularly interested in the influence of highly skilled artisans in making the tools used in this ancient bison kill site, especially as represented at Barton Gulch near Virginia City, Montana. The presentation will be prepared for publication this coming winter.
Dental Assistant Program Re-Accredited
Article Submitted Robin Williams
The Dental Assistant program successfully completed their accreditation site visit on September 25-26.  Two site visitors from the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) met with the program faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the two day visit.  Minor recommendations made by the site visitors will be addressed by the program faculty and submitted to CODA prior to their January 2009 meeting when the decision on accreditation status will be made.

The Dental Assistant program faculty would like to thank everyone involved in helping the site visit go as smoothly as it did.  Thank you, especially, to Patty Laird, Lorene Jaynes, Ken Wardinsky, Willie McGee, Melanie Paul, Julie Rummel, Sheila Bonnand, Sandy Brown, Sue Thomas, Art England (he even took us on a tour of the basement), Greg Paulauskis, Joe Schaffer, Heidi Pasek, Mary Ellen Baukol, Charlene Marshall, Kylie Schauss, Carissa Allen, and all the DA students. The kindness of Student Central in welcoming the site visitors when they first arrived was very appreciated as was the help from Bookstore staff.  Special thanks goes out to the Dental Hygiene faculty--Kim Woloszyn, Bonnie Lederman, Linda Wing, and Gail Staples for their tremendous help preparing the labs and clinic for the site visit (we owe you big in 2011!). Finally, thanks to Jodi Howard for stepping in and making sure there were no loose ends, exams were given, and everyone was fed.
Digital Camera 101 IT
Are you thinking of buying a digital camera and just don't know where to begin?  Or do you already have a camera and don't feel you are using it to its capacity? If you said "yes" to either of these questions, this class is for YOU! We will explore the options common to digital cameras, what brands are on the market and how to find the best one to suit you and your pocket book.  If you already have a digital camera, bring it to class to learn how to get the most out of it and to achieve the results you want!

The class is from 9 am - noon on October 20, 22, 23 in B136.  The cost is only $89.  If interested stop in and see Deborah Richerson or Melanie Paul in Outreach.

Board of Regents meet in Butte
Excerpts from the notes of Dr. Heidi Pasek, Chief Academic Officer

Commissioner's Report - Strategic Plan and Initiatives & Updates:  Transferability and Distance Education were the primary focus.  But, College Readiness, e.g., the ACT/SAT, MUS Writing Assessment; Montana Indian Education for All (MIEA) Resolutions; Proposed Changes to Schedule of Meetings; and Indian Education for All were all touched upon as well. The transferability and common course numbering initiative (as described in the previous section above) must proceed on schedule.  Commissioner Sterns also emphasized that the legislature will be asking about our progress and expects results.  Distance education is an important focus area for the Board.  Additionally Governor Schweitzer, in an effort to promote access for all Montanans, encouraged all the units to concentrate on expanding distance learning alternatives for our citizens.

Operating Budgets and Agency-specific Agenda for Action and Information: Operating Budgets for each of the units were presented. Dean Schaffer presented the MSU-Great Falls COT budget on September 25th. Each budget presentation may be accessed at the OCHE website.  Our Level II Request, The AAS in Graphic Design Technology was granted and the degree approved. The Montana Green Campus - A Virtual Gateway to the MUS was presented by Deputy Commissioner Trevor.

MOA - Making Opportunity Affordable Proposal: "Montana has numerous providers of two-year education programming, including but not limited to 15 designated two-year colleges in a state with a total population of approximately 950,000.  In spite of the availability of two-year education and one of the lowest average annual wages in the nation, Montanans are not making appropriate use of this affordable, student-centered portal to higher education.  Only 21% of all students engaged in higher education in Montana in Fall 2006 were enrolled at a two-year college; nationally, the average was 46%."
The entire MOA draft may be accessed via the OCHE website.
Fall 2008 Montana High School Tour Overview
Submited by Natalie Nefzger

The fall 2008 Montana High School tour ended last week in Kalispell, but the excitement for the Juniors and Seniors I saw across the Big Sky State has only begun. I had the opportunity to connect with over 226 students with many interests and lots of questions. The tour started in Havre the first week, Bozeman the second week, and Butte the last week. During this time, I was fortunate enough to see the leaves changing and experience the Montana some people only see in magazines. With the exception of three snakes, two alive and one dead, it was a nice time to be on the road.

The tour is also a great time to see what's happening on other college campuses across the state. I had the opportunity to learn who offers what so if a student asks for something that we don't have, I can send them in the right direction. It's also exciting to see the new building projects on Montana campuses as well as new program offerings. For example, there is a massive building project going on right now in Butte at Montana Tech called the Natural Resources building. They are so proud of their construction project and were very happy to hear about our addition and new trades building.

If you have any questions about the tour or the regions I visited, feel free to stop by. I also have the newest edition of the Montana Post Secondary Educational Opportunities Council guide. It's a listing of all the educational opportunities available in Montana and a few the surrounding states.
