American Indian Heritage: A Forward Perspective
Thursday, September 25th 7 PM B 101 Montana is home to eight tribal governments representing eleven tribes, seven reservations, and five major urban Indian communities. As a result, our state is a rich center of American Indian heritage where culture and spirit are very much alive. Yet Montana's Indian population is challenged by a variety of social and economic issues. What programs and projects are underway to address these concerns and what policies can be initiated to beneficially impact our state's Native population. Listen to a lively discussion as panelists and the audience address these issues during American Indian Heritage Week. |

Adjunct Faculty make 100% with the Orientation Requirement
Article Submitted by Kim Schrenk
It was a great start for adjunct faculty teaching for the MSU - Great Falls campus (online and face-to-face instructors), with 100% in compliance with the orientation requirement for fall semester 2008! Full time faculty and staff teaching as adjunct were exempt from completing the orientation fall semester. New adjunct faculty completed an in-depth session that covered FERPA, outcomes assessment and campus procedures. Returning adjunct faculty completed a shorter session that covered updates including key changes to campus structure, personnel, and policies over the last year. Approximately 71% completed the online orientation and 29% attended a face-to-face session. Adjunct instructors were paid a small stipend for completing the orientation activities. Last year at this point in the semester, only 71% of adjunct instructors had completed the required orientation. The overall completion rates for last year landed on 91% by the end of fall semester 2007 and 94% by the end of spring semester 2008. |
Dual Credit Access to Online College Courses On Friday, September 12, 2008 the Board of Public Education unanimously adopted a significant new avenue for licensure for dual-credit instructors. Under the recommendation students will have greater access to dual-credit courses. "This is an historic moment. Montana has created a practical means that ensures flexibility and preserves quality," asserted board member Dr. Kirk Miller. Over a two-year period a 25-member task force ironed out solutions to complex dual-credit issues. Said Steve Meloy, "The Board of Public Education appreciates the statewide attention this issue has drawn, and thanks the collaborative effort among its partners to arrive at this unanimous and national precedent setting rule. I am proud of the work this group has done on the behalf of all Montanans." Beginning fall semester 2009, all postsecondary instructors of dual-credit courses will be required to hold an active K-12 teaching license. The Montana Office of Public Instruction will provide guidance and technical assistance to postsecondary faculty on the application and approval process for the new Class 8 K-12 license. For more information, please contact Steve Meloy, Executive Secretary Board of Public Education. Email: smeloy@montana.edu 406-444-6576 |
Adjunct English Instructor Presents Paper At Western Association Conference Article Submitted Kim Schrenk
Karen M. Wilcox, adjunct English faculty with MSU - Great Falls, has been accepted as a participant in the 43rd Western Literature Association conference in Boulder, Colorado. The conference will be held from October 1-4, 2008, hosted by Professors Karen Ramirez of The University of Colorado and Nicholas Witschi of Western Michigan University. Wilcox will read her non-fiction essay, "Collaborating with the Dead: Reading about Rousseau, Writing in My Journal." While reading Leo Damrosch's biography of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and recording insightful quotes in her journal along with rich detail from her everyday life, the author discovers interesting parallels between herself and Rousseau, between his life and hers. After all, Wilcox asks, don't we read biographies and autobiographies to identify with the subjects, to resonate with another, whether alive or dead? Rousseau grew up reading fantastic, romantic literature, which "gave [him] bizarre and romantic notions of human life, which experience and reflection have never been able to cure [him] of" (2005, p. 15). Ms. Wilcox can say the same about her own life. This text proves that collaboration can occur under the most unlikely circumstances and with the most unexpected partners. |
