Seeking Students, Faculty & Staff to Plan Speaker Series
Submitted by Thomas Figarelle
We are proud to announce the creation of a lecture series on campus, Community Conversation, which will focus on developing sound public discourse by engaging local residents in a discussion of the issues within our city and region. We are seeking students, faculty and staff to participate in planning the speaker series.

From video gaming and poverty, to rural economics and environmental concerns, your input will ensure the series will become a resource for progress in our community. The first two events are set to recognize Constitution Day (Sept. 17) and American Indian Heritage Week (Sept. 25). See details below.

We need your input as we further develop this concept.  Plan to attend the organizational meeting of the new Speaker Series Committee on Friday, September 19 at 10 am in the College Relations and Outreach Conference Room (G107).  Bring your ideas on topics and speakers as we brainstorm future events.

This series will be a great service to our community and further demonstrate our willingness to enhance the presence of higher education in Great Falls. Please consider being involved.  For more information or questions, contact Tom Figarelle at 771-4412.

Montana's Constitution and the Right to a Clean and Healthful Environment
Wednesday, September 17 - 7:00 pm Room B101
As the debate continues on coal's future in Montana, we investigate our state's constitutional right to a "clean and healthful environment."  What was the intent of the authors who crafted this language?  How has this right impacted Montana's political, legal, and economic landscape over the past thirty years and how do we expect it to impact our future development?  Hear from delegates of Montana's 1972 Constitutional Convention as we recognize this timely issue on national Constitution Day.  Joining us will be Bob Campbell a delegate to the 1972 Constitutional Convention and main writer of the state constitution.
Public is invited to attend.
American Indian Heritage: A Forward Perspective
Thursday, September 25 - 7:00 pm Room B101
Montana is home to eight tribal governments representing eleven tribes, seven reservations, and five major urban American Indian communities.  As a result, our state is a rich center of American Indian heritage where culture and spirit are very much alive.  Yet, Montana's Indian population is challenged by a variety of social and economic issues. What programs and projects are underway to address these concerns and what policies can be initiated to beneficially impact our state's Native population? Listen to a lively discussion as panelists and the audience address these issues during American Indian Heritage Week.
Public is invited to attend.
Be on the Lookout!
Welcome 50 students Simms High School to campus on Wednesday, September 17! Lanni Klasner and Tom Figarelle will be taking them on tour of the campus.  Judy Hay will talk to them about the opportunities available at MSU - Great Falls. You may see them as they participate in a scavenger hunt around campus. The Simms students will be in Great Falls on Wednesday to participate in the MPSEOC College Fair at UGF's McLaughlin Center. If you have time between 1 and 3 pm, visit the Fair and check out the colleges represented. Each college will have a display, recruitment materials, and recruiters available to answer questions and promote their institution. You will find our recruiter, Natalie Nefzger, actively promoting MSU - Great Falls and our programs!
New Department Chairs in the Division of Arts & Sciences
We have four new Department Chairs in the Division of Arts and Sciences!  Dr. Cherie McKeever will serve as the Chair for the Department of Science.  Colleen Hazen will Chair the Department of English and Communication.  Dennis Veleber will Chair Humanities, the Fine Arts and Social Sciences.  And in the Department of Mathematics, the Chair will be Tom Oakberg.

Northern's Jamruszka Visits Campus
Steve Jamruszka, Northern's Dean of Students, visited with our Recruiting, Admissions, and Marketing staff to illustrate the reporting potential of our Banner (student management) software. Microsoft Office Access and Excel can be used in conjunction with Banner to manage prospect names and follow the progress of our students through the admissions process to ensure they are getting the attention and information they need. Steve has developed some very effective tools he was willing to share with our staff. His work with our campus is very much appreciated. We are looking forward to seeing him a few more times this fall semester as he visits Great Falls to work with students who are seeking their Bachelor's degrees through Northern in Great Falls.
