Dean Schaffer Presents Convocation Address
Interim Dean Joe Schaffer welcomed faculty and staff to the 2008-09 academic year at Convocation on August 25 in Heritage Hall with a presentation titled 'Building Foundations.' He reviewed the changes on campus over the past few months:
- Mary Moe's departure and new position as Deputy Commissioner of Two-Year Education
- Pilot Academic Division Restructuring
- Facilities Updates
- New Programs
There are changes at the COT in Bozeman as well. Dr. Vicki Orazem has resigned as Assistant Dean for Bozeman programs and Dr. Janet Heiss-Arms, formerly the Director of Success Initiatives, will serve as the interim Assistant Dean in Bozeman. MSU - Great Falls remains committed to the efforts to bring two-year education to the Gallatin Valley.
It is an exciting time for our college with a record number of graduates last spring, continued strong enrollments, the grand opening of the Trades Building, anticipation of a wind energy turbine and a campus childcare project.
The challenge for Great Falls and for Montana is to increase participation rates in two-year colleges. Two-year institutions like MSU - Great Falls are uniquely positioned and designed to adapt to emerging workforce demand and changing demographics. We are looking forward to developing a new strategic plan, working on the University System common course numbering project, and working with our legislators during the upcoming year.
Over the course of the next year, we will be revisiting our Mission Statement, developing our Strategic Plan, evaluating the Institution's Effectiveness, and Aligning Resources, Programs and Services with our Mission.

She and her husband will remain in the Gallatin Valley. Dr. Janet Heiss-Arms has accepted the position as Interim Assistant Dean. Janet has held the position of Director of Academic Success Initiatives for Bozeman Programs since July 2006. She earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis and Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. She has extensive experience in higher education in Wisconsin, Germany and Washington. |
 Grand Opening - Grand Dreams
Thursday, September 4 from 5 to 7 pm The Grand Opening of the Construction and Industrial Trades Building will kick off the College's Annual Appeal - our first public campaign to raise funds for the College by asking the community. Co-hosts for the event are Brad Talcott of Talcott Construction and Mike Waldenberg of Central Plumbing and Heating. Both are donors and members of the College's Development Steering Committee. Chamber of Commerce members are invited to join us for the Business After Hours event. |
Campus Emergency Training An excellent training session with Sergeant John Schaffer of the Great Falls Police Department was held on Friday, August 29. Nearly fifty faculty and staff attended the presentation which focused on campus response to violence - specifically a shooter on campus. We are in the process of implementing MSUGF ALERT! which is an immediate notification system allowing us to notify subscribers by text message, voice and email message when a campus lockdown is implemented. It requires students, faculty and staff to voluntarily subscribe. You will find the link on our home page, or go directly to http://www.msugf.edu/msugfalert/index.html to subscribe. |
| Kudos!
Tom Cole, IT Department, will be featured in the Computing Technology Industry Association's (CompTIA) IT Pro Newsletter and on their website home page in September. Student Government President, Mark Mathison, a member of the MSUGF Literary Guild, wrote a one-act play for a Center Stage Production that was staged in August. |
