Greetings!

Welcome to the updated MSU-Great Falls Campus News!  I hope you find the new format easy to navigate and visually appealing.  We are committed to keeping you up-to-date with news from the MSU-Great Falls Campus. In this issue, you will find an opportunity for professional growth through Great Falls Public Schools, changes in personnel, office relocations, technology updates, and information about new space for your use.

It seems like there is quite a bit else new around campus as well, such as faculty, staff, and our facilities.  You'll get a chance to read about some of the most recent additions to our MSU-Great Falls family below.  But as we look forward to the quickly approaching fall semester I wanted to share with you the great impact our new buildings and renovations are having on our community.  We are seeing great interest and enrollment in our new trades building, which is slated to be done in late August.  Numerous other students are being drawn to us from the community as our image now matches the quality education we provide.  Most significantly though is the outpouring of comments and accolades I have received from community leaders on what the campus has become and the hard work you all have invested to get us here.  Congratulations.

I am looking forward to a new semester with you all.

Best,
Joe Schaffer

New Student Accounts Technician
Cheril Edam is the new student accounts technician. Cheril and her family moved to Montana in 2006 upon her husband's retirement. They first settled in Helena, moving to Great Falls in March of 2008. Previously, she spent 20+ years in higher education within the Washington State system. She held positions in student accounts, cashiers and financial aid. When she retired in 2003, she stayed home for a few months, then decided to return to work as a "temp substitute" which exposed her to several different employment opportunities. She ended up with a permanent position in an insurance agency, where she remained until they moved to Montana.

Cheril is very pleased to return to the higher education arena. It is where her heart has always been, working with students, faculty and staff. When not working, Cheril enjoy's playing with her dog, gardening, reading and camping with her husband.
Medical Assistant Program Director Hired
Cheri Calsetta is the new Medical Assistant Program Director. She has worked in many settings including acute care hospital, walk-in clinic, medical office management and transcription.  She taught in Missoula where she helped disadvantaged/abused women return to the workforce by extensive support, mentoring and education.  She has lobbied Washington, D.C. lawmakers regarding rural healthcare and is heavily involved in asthma education. She has been a medical assistant for many years in the specialties of Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery and Cardiopulmonary.

Cheri and her husband Richard have been married for 27 years, have two wonderful grown daughters (one who is a MSU-Northern student) and a beloved 16-month-old grandson, Ethan.  Her hobbies include rubber-stamping crafts, baking and scrapbooking.  Cheri loves to garden and raises African violets.

P.S. Cheri and Richard are long-time fanatic season ticket holders for the UM Grizzlies (!!!) in Missoula.
Nursing Pinning Ceremony
Eleven Nursing Students were pinned on Friday, the 18th of July, in Heritage Hall. These students were pinned by their children, spouses, parents, or boyfriends.  Each student had written a thank you message that was read as they were being pinned.  Heritage Hall was decorated by the students, and refreshments were provided by and in some cases, made by the students.  Honored guests at the ceremony were: Judy Hay, Chris Ludlum (Director of Nurses at GF Clinic), and Theresa Busch.  National Laundry donated all table linens for the ceremony.  Cheryll Alt welcomed everyone to the ceremony.  Patti Kercher gave the address.  Cindy Schultz introduced the students, and read the thank you messages.  Donna Hartelius handed out the flowers given to the students from the faculty. Student, Erica Beauchamp, also addressed the audience.

Bonnie Lederman and Marilyn Besich are new members of the Montana PBS Task Force. The purpose of the Task Force is to raise funds to pay for a digital transmission tower that will provide free PBS reception to the Golden Triangle.
Patty Laird sings in Top of the Falls, a Sweet Adelines Choir. The group  sang at the East-West Shrine Game. Women who love to sing are invited to join the group - see Patty for more information.
Judy Hay and Ken Wardinsky have been accepted to participate in the Chamber's Leadership Great Falls program for the coming year.

Did you know that Montana ranks 5th in the nation for volunteer rate? Lanni shared a release from the Department of Labor and Industry that our state has 284,000 volunteers giving 35.3 million hours of service each year. We have an averabe of 47.2 volunteer hours per capita per year. "This is proof that Montana's greatest natural resource is its people," says Governor Brian Schweitzer. "It confirms that her in Montana, neighbors help neighbors, which is one of the reasons it continues to be the last best place."
Hey, where did they go?
The College Relations and Outreach Departments have moved to their new space.  They are now located in the "old Library." You are invited to stop by for a tour. You will be interested in the features of the new G107 Conference Room as well as the three classrooms that were added to this area. You will find your friendly College Relations and Outreach staff in the following offices:  Tom Figarelle-G113; Rhonda Kueffler-G106; Lanni Klasner-G105; Jeff Paul-G104; Pam Parsons-G102; Melanie Paul-G101; Deb Richerson-G115. To reserve the Conference Room meetings or training, call Melanie Paul and ask to reserve G107.

Information Technology will be moving to B129 shortly to join IT Director, Ken Wardinsky, in the B-wing. The new IT area features glass panels that will give you a look behind the scenes at the College's servers.

KGPR is in the process of moving to G118-119. An appealing aspect of the move is that the new studio is located close to an external entrance. Public radio volunteers will have better access to the KGPR studio and to Executive Director, Tom Halverson,.

Deby Gunter has moved into G20, the office vacated by Joe Schaffer.

Until the Trades Building is finished you will find Kyle Gilliespie, Welding Faculty and  Pat Schoenen in offices R270 and R273.
AT THE BOOKSTORE!!!

Phone, Internet and Music
Ken Wardinsky
reports that our voice mail and phone system will be upgraded in two phases over the next 6 months.  The new systems will be more flexible and have options such as integrated voice messaging with the option of phone messages appearing as sound files on Outlook. Instant messaging is another possibility for this system. IT Services will be rolling out pilot projects on these new features this coming fall.  The State has contracted with Bresnan for Internet service which will give us increased bandwidth for a lower price.

Ken has negotiated a license with ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) that will allow us to play music in our public areas and also for some events on and off campus without copyright violation or infringement.
We can:
Use music as part of an educational lecture, project, or podcast for students.
Play music and music videos in public areas such as the bookstore, atrium, and commons.
Play music through the telephone system for callers on 'hold.'
Play music at events sponsored solely by the college such as trade fairs, student picnic, events, and other conferences.
We cannot:
Copy, reproduce, or distribute music.
Play movies in public areas as this falls under different copyright areas.
This license does not include theatrical performances.
