LEED v4 Now Open for 5th Public Comment Period

As LEED continues to evolve and raise the bar for sustainability and green building, YOU can play a part!
You have until December 10 to review and comment on the most recent version of the LEED Green Building Rating System - LEED v4.

All changes to the current LEED v4 draft are based on feedback from the 4th public comment period this past spring and include improved clarity, increased flexibility and options for project teams, and streamlined requirements.
Some things to look for:
  • Rewards for integrative design from the beginning of a project
  • A lifecycle approach at the whole-building level
  • Incentive for using less material, the right material and the best material
Some things that won't change:
  • Prioritizing water and energy efficiency
  • Supporting innovative thinking

And, beginning in November interested project teams will be selected to participate in the Beta for LEED v4 in order to test the support tools and resources and identify any challenges connected to proposed documentation.

Learn more about LEED v4 and how to comment on the
USGBC website!

Recent Study Shows Green Buildings Improve Company Financial Performance

A study that came out earlier this year shows that business performance and building performance are related. Finally!

The study, entitled, "The Relationship Between Corporate Sustainability and Firm Financial Performance," was co-authored by two University of Notre Dame management professors in April 2012. It compares the financial performance of 93 LEED certified bank branches with 469 non-certified branches owned and operated by PNC Financial Services Group, using consumer deposit and loan data collected in 2008-2010.

The findings show:

  • PNC's LEED certified facilities opened 458 more consumer deposit accounts and had over $3 million more in consumer deposit balances per facility per year over non-certified properties.
  • LEED certified banks opened 25 more consumer loan accounts and had almost $1 million more in loan balances per facility per year.
  • After controlling for other variables that influence performance, the sales at LEED certified branches increased by $461,300 per employee compared to non-certified locations.
  • Utility costs per employee in LEED branches were significantly lower than in the non-certified buildings at a reduction of $675 per employee.

The St. Louis Business Journal recently highlighted this study and two of PNC's LEED certified bank branches here - one on Page in the City of St. Louis and one in Fairview Heights, IL.

Check out the full study here.
