Chiras

Success with Natural Building Materials

Presented in partnership with the

Eastern Missouri Group of the Sierra Club

Speaker Dan Chiras will describe the many natural building material options available to architects, builders, and homeowners.  Mass and insulation properties of each material, and how local climate affects the choice of material will be discussed.  A number of technical issues will be explored, such as foundation types, wall framing options, load-bearing vs. nonload bearing, prepping walls for plasters, which plasters work best (provide the best protection) for straw bale, as well as some red flag issues such as insects, rodents, fire and moisture and steps to take to avoid them.

10 Green Years & Still Building

It's hard to believe we're already half way through 2011. What better time to take a look back at past accomplishments and get revved up for all that lies ahead?!

In celebration of the Chapter's 10 Year Anniversary, we asked Chapter leaders and members to share their thoughts on our region's green building progress and successes.  Listen to what they had to say:

10 Green Years & Still Building for the Future -- Our Region's Progress & Success

"It has been an astounding decade for advocates of sustainable construction in St. Louis. Ten years ago, when Bob Berkebeile helped people in St. Louis start one of the first local chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building rating system had been on the market for only a year. . ."  Read more
