Empath Wins A Nightingale
Nurture has earned a fourth prestigious Nightingale Award at the annual Healthcare Design 2011 Conference for its new recliner, Empath. In healthcare, every interaction between a patient and caregiver matters. Nurture helps support these moments by understanding people and asking whether the environment is doing everything it can to support their needs. For Empath, Nurture considered caregivers as "users" as much as patients and created a recliner that offers a variety of versatile, insight-driven design features to accommodate the needs of both.
Empath is a complete recliner, designed from the ground up as an integrated, holistic solution and easily fits into nearly any healthcare environment. For patients, Empath is inviting and comfortable. For caregivers, Empath is safe and easy to use, which provides them with a sense of confidence to help create a truly healing environment. For more information on Empath, visit www.nurture.com/empath.
The 2011 Nightingale Awards honor new healthcare products introduced to the U.S. market since November 2010. They are awarded based on the product's contribution to the quality of healthcare, functionality, quality, aesthetics, environmental sustainability and pricing, and are judged by a distinguished panel of interior designers and architects that specialize in healthcare design. This is the fourth Nightingale Award for Nurture, with Opus™ Overbed Table, SYNC™ centralized and decentralized workstations and Pocket™ mobile workstations as previous award winners.

Opus Win at Children's Medical Center in Dallas
For Phase One of a multi-part project, Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas had a unique problem: they needed a functionally-designed Casegoods solution for a compressed exam footprint of only 100 square feet. Libby Larson and the specials team were up to the challenge however, and their hard work resulted in an order of 20 exam rooms in just Phase One alone.
Travis Leissner, lead architect at A&D firm KMD, Debbie Zarsk, account representative for Children's from BKM, and Libby Larson worked to develop a customized Opus solution for consult, storage and seating in the exam room. Part of the team also included a family/patient focus group which helped with layout and design ideas, based on the functional needs of all potential end users. This collaboration resulted in integrating custom-colored inserts to create a playful environment for children. This first phase of a major planned renovation should be completed in 2012.
This project was presented at Healthcare Design in Nashville by Travis from KMD and Kaye Schmidt, from Children's. Their presentation introduction reads, "This case study shows, first hand, how efficiency was designed into the clinic setting for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Children's Medical Center. Attendees will witness how the maximum number of examination rooms was achieved within existing space with a typical exam room configuration grounded in evidence-based design principles, which wasted little to no space. Although BIM technology for 3D analysis enhanced the design process, a full-scale mock up for caregiver and hospital staff review was warranted. You'll hear how this ergonomically-planned layout was accomplished and how other stakeholders, such as donors and family members, provided recommendations from the customer and visitor side."

Libby attended the presentation and said, "We are so fortunate to have worked with these client and architectural partners, who enjoyed sharing their project story with almost 200 people at HCD this week. We could not have scripted a better commercial for Nurture, Opus and our dealer."
