A Strong Relationship Leads to Leela at UM
Ann Arbor, MI - The University of Michigan Health System and Steelcase have had a strong relationship that dates back decades.
While the relationship has historically centered around administrative furnishings, the creation of Nurture allowed the relationship to expand into clinical environments as well.
The University's 2005 announcement of the construction of a new Mott Children's Hospital offered Steelcase and NBS (Troy-based Steelcase dealer) an opportunity to pull together a comprehensive response to the facility's product needs. When the bid was released in the summer of 2006, Steelcase's Kristi Helstowski and Benjamin Pratt along with NBS' Sachi Turnbull worked diligently with their respective teams to pull together the overall response. Due to the team's persistence, NBS' location on campus, and the long-standing relationship, NBS and Steelcase earned the administrative business in 2007.
While Steelcase won the administrative furniture for the project, decisions on the clinical furniture (i.e. recliners, waiting room seating, etc.) were left to committee decision. In 2009, Jeff Allor and Jeff Fredrickson began positioning Nurture's R2 product as a comfortable, flexible, transitionally-designed product for Mott's waiting room standard. Through demonstrations, visits to Nurture's NeoCon showroom, and the ability to modify the chair's frame to U-M's specifications, Nurture was ultimately awarded the waiting room standard with R2 (subsequently re-named Leela.) The effort resulted in approximately $500,000 worth of Leela for NBS and Nurture that began shipping in July 2011.
The strength of the relationship with the University, NBS' presence on campus, and the persistence of Steelcase representatives over a five year period of time resulted in a substantial win for both parties in southeast Michigan. Moving forward, Nurture and NBS continue to seek ways to position more Nurture solutions and deliver more value for the U-M Health System.
