Nurture Partners in Patient Centered Design
The Avera Cancer Institute is a destination cancer center in Sioux Falls SD. Three years ago, it became very clear that the Avera Cancer Institute's present facility could no longer accommodate expanding programs. Avera leaders worked closely with physicians, staff, patients and family members to design the new 260,000-suare foot building housing the Avera cancer Institute and Avera Surgery Center.
Six priorities were identified:
1.) A welcoming setting with as many services in one place as possible 2.) A place that honored personal choice 3.) A healing environment with scenic views and a connection to nature 4.) An environment free of potential toxic building materials 5.) A building that welcomes the community with space for education, gatherings and fine art. 6.) A building that is "green" and friendly to the environment
Avera has been a client of Interstate Office Products (Sioux Falls) for over forty years. The Interstate team: Gary Gaspar, Kim
Ducommun and Reed Scott - arranged a Jet Trip to Grand Rapids where they toured the Lemmon-Holton Cancer Center in Grand Rapids MI. Also, Mark Harrison (Nurture AHM) presented Nurture's research, "Environments for Cancer Care." This served to cement Nurture's position as the supplier that could facilitate Avera's priorities.
The new Avera Cancer Institute is a patient-centered environment that features Terrazzo chairs on balconies outside of the private infusion rooms to give a view of an extensive indoor garden with a number of native plantings, two indoor waterfalls, and indoor and outdoor water feature. Mitra Guest and Lounge in waiting and family areas. Jenny seating in Staff lounges and Enea chairs and stools in indoor garden area.
