Designer Spotlight

FASID, EDAC
What do I hope will be my book, Evidence-Based Healthcare Design's lasting influence?
"It was my intent in writing Evidence-Based Healthcare Design to record a shift in practice methodology that would be comfortable and malleable for any designer/architect/facility planner/client/educator to use. This book should serve as a guide not a primer to understand why the shift is occurring particularly in healthcare, why we collectively have a responsibility to build a body of knowledge around design related outcomes, and how we, as designers can play an important role in healthcare innovation/reform. It therefore should serve as a catalyst for teams to strive to deliver quantifiable insight on how their projects improve the delivery of quality and safe healthcare.
It's lasting influence will be a shift in practice methodology that changes attitudes through measurable results about the role design plays in human, health, organizational and economic outcomes in any specialty."

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Come and experience the good, the bad, and the ugly of materials selection. Jay Bolus of MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry) joins Nurture by Steelcase for this CEU presentation. Jay was directly responsible for the development of MBDC's Cradle to Cradle Benchmarking methodology, a tool to evaluate the impact chemicals and materials have on human and environmental health throughout their life cycles. Jay's recent projects include the development of the "McDonough Collection" of commercial carpet tiles in conjunction with Shaw Industries, the world's largest carpet manufacturer. MBDC was awarded the 2003 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for their work on this product. When we come to a deeper understanding of a particular material that is in a product or a particular process that is used to create a new product, we begin to realize the impact of the choices we make each day. It's why we are here today - to explore how the material choices we make - as consumers, architects, designers, facilities managers, project managers...each day - can have either a positive or negative impact on human health, and the health of the planet.

Nurture, Best of Showroom NeoCon 2009
Chicago - Nurture Captures "Best Large Showroom" and "Best of Competition" Awards in 14th Annual Competition Sponsored by IIDA and Contract Magazine. Steve McCollom, IIDA, Vice President of Communications for IIDA described Nurture's winning showroom.
"The approach by the Nurture design team was authentic, evidence based design," said McCollum. "The designers went to great degrees to create spaces that truly simulate what a user would experience-it feels like a healthcare environment, not a showroom or location in The Mart. The Nurture showroom, quite simply, celebrates the integrity of the product and what it does. It works."
