Board Retreat:

The Young Community Developers, Inc. Board of Directors is a group of highly dedicated and committed individuals. This team of professionals, attorneys, retirees and business owners proved their hearts are big and dedicated their entire day to a retreat on Friday March 18, 2011. The retreat was held at the Port of San Francisco (alongside the Embarcadero), on this rainy Friday. The retreat was dedicated to understanding the strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats of YCD, with an added emphasis on board structure and fundraising focus and goals for the next 2 years.

The retreat was attended by an overwhelming majority of YCD Board of Directors and we accomplished the goals of the retreat. This is one small piece of the strategic planning process that we have in place as an agency and we will be continuing to work on our specialization as an agency, taking advantage of available opportunities for the community we serve and continuing to enhance any areas of service that need growth.

We would like to thank our board (names listed on the side of the newsletter) for all that they do and continue to do for our agency and our community as a whole.

jrt2JRT Graduation:

Graduates participated in an eight (8) week job readiness and life skills training program, during which time they received training in the enhancement or development of skills in the areas of: conflict resolution, interviewing techniques and resume development.  Graduates also had the opportunity to attend the HealthCare Sector Academy orientation with Jewish Vocational Services (JVS).  In addition, guest speakers from Goodwill Industries and BUILD both provided insight and overview of their prospective programs, which provided graduates with options in green jobs as well as construction.

Young Community Developers congratulates the twelve graduates that demonstrated dedication and commitment in enhancing their professional development.  We look forward to providing many more jobseekers during our JRT's second cycle of 2011, which begins on April 4th.

YCD - Solar City

 Solar City Graduation:

On Friday March 25, 2011 at 2:00p.m., Young Community Developers (YCD), Inc. and A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) hosted a graduation ceremony for participants that completed an 11 and ½ week solar training. The training was sponsored by Solar City and conducted by instructors at City College of San Francisco (CCSF); at the Evans Street campus. Participants received training in solar panel installation and solar sales. In addition, each participant also received their 40 hour hazmat and OSHA 10 Safety training certificates. These certificates and their solar training, will allow them to receive employment in not only the solar-Green Sector, but will also allow them to make constructions employment connections. Each participant's math and cognitive skills were tested at a high level and they fought through the rigorous schedule.

We would like to thank the staff, instructors and entire faculty at CCSF for their dedication to our participants and the community. We would also like to thank the representatives from Solar City for sponsoring the training and working to provide employment connections for our participants who completed the program. In addition, our community partners at Anders and Anders as well as Brightline Defense Project, for providing outreach and follow-up services for participants within this project as well.

There were seven participants who completed the entire 11 and ½ week training and moved on to other trainings or employment opportunities. Each participant who completed the program received a $600.00 stipend (in December 2010) and a certificate of completion. Once again we are proud to congratulate:
