Job Placements: Sunborne Nursery:

One of the advantages of participating in YCD's Job Readiness Training (JRT) classes, is the fact that we have built partnerships that lead to job placements.YCD has developed a relationship with Sunborne Nursery and this has resulted in two part-time placements. One participant was placed directly from our JRT and another YCD job seeker was placed as a result of our Education and Employment Specialists' case management.

YCD hopes to continue to build these small business relationships, as our community is working hard to gain the skills employment.

MYEEP in SF:

MYEEP in SF is an annual event put together by the Mayor's Youth Employment and Education Program. The focus of MYEEP in SF is to provide MYEEP high school youth with resources for college and career success. In late January each of our MYEEP youth completed a survey that indicated which industries they wanted to learn more about; these surveys were taken to in order to see where youth would be placed during MYEEP in SF.

Friday Feb 4th, hundreds of MYEEP youth spent their furlough day gaining insight about the careers that interest them. Over 30 local businesses provided a glimpse of their work setting and allowed youth to participate in activities pertaining to the businesses in their workspace.

The youth really enjoyed learning about careers that interest them and YCD is proud to be a part of the MYEEP family. Two YCD staff participated in the event and visited businesses with the youth. It was a great experience for all!

Our fifth JRT cycle began on January 24th, 2011 and will run for eight weeks.   There are a total of twelve participants, all of whom have demonstrated their commitment in their individual professional growth.  Their consistent attendance is indicative of this as well testimonies expressed.   One candidate in particular, Ms. Glenda Daniels, stated the following: "I have been through YCD before and thought returning would be going backwards in my life...but I am glad that I made the decision to come back because I am learning more skills and being here has also increased my self-confidence."  Participants have also had the benefit of participation in a 3 day information session, presented by Alex Francois of BUILD (Bringing Underemployed Individuals to Local Developers).  This informative workshop provided education on the construction trade, hiring process and ways to navigate success in this career.

Local Mandatory Hiring Legislation

One of the most positive happenings of 2010 was the passage of the Local Mandatory Hiring Legislation for construction projects in San Francisco. YCD is a supporter of the legislation (explained below) because we are in favor of ensuring that people have the opportunity to work in their own communities.

Under the ordinance, introduced by Supervisor John Avalos, city contractors and subcontractors working on city-funded construction projects worth $400,000 or more would have to ensure that at least 20 percent of the workers live in San Francisco during the first year the mandate becomes effective; the local-worker requirement increases 5 percentage points every year until it hits the 50 percent mark in seven years. Contractors who fail to meet the requirement will face financial penalties.

We are working diligently as part of the Southeast Jobs Coalition (and many other entities and organizations) to make sure that residents in the Southeast Sector of San Francisco are able to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the passage of this legislation. This brings hope to the many unemployed residents in the Bayview Hunters Point Community, as well as residents in San Francisco as a whole.

We are looking forward to the benefits!
