Comcast Comes to YCD:
On January 19, 2011 YCD provided a direct connection to our BVHP community and available job opportunities with the 59th ranked company by Fortune 500 in 2010, Comcast. A Comcast representative came out to YCD as a part of outreach and recruitment for over 95 positions that involved sales of Comcast & its many services. Community members sat in on an hour and a half orientation about many of Comcast's accolades involving their service, business structure, and compensation plan as it pertained to the available job positions. Community members were very enthusiastic, engaged, asked questions, and were able to apply for the Comcast positions on site here at YCD.
For community members who were in attendance YCD provided them all with free lunch and conducted a raffle for gifts and prizes. We were very pleased with the 13 community members in attendance, as we are looking forward to inviting more employers or employer representatives down to YCD to present t opportunities their companies have for our many BVHP residents that are work ready.

YCD Hires New GED Instructor/Coordinator:
One of our most pertinent components of working with participants is eliminating any barriers to education. During the latter part of January, we were able to hire a GED Instructor/Coordinator, that will provide tutorial services for YCD as well as coordinate all components of GED connection for YCD participants. Our GED Instructor/Coordinator has an education background and has been working with youth in preparing them for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for a long time. We now have those talents and skills as a part of our team. Now when GED is detected as a barrier to employment by our Education and Employment Specialist, our GED instructor can work with individuals to prepare them for the GED test.
This is exciting news as we will now be able to provide more comprehensive services as an agency and work to eliminate another barrier to employment for the community we serve. |
