YCDjob2

Philz Coffee Hires YCD Participants: Small Business Placements "Making Opportunities Real":
One of the greatest things about working in the community is the organic and informal relationships one can build when attempting to help others. I met the owner of the Philz Coffee stores at an event in the latter part of October. Phil and I began talking about what we do and to sum up a long story, he had a couple of available jobs and here at YCD we were in the middle of one of
our Job Readiness Initiative (JR) Job Training cycles.

Owner Phil Jaber asked if we had a couple of people that would show up to work on time and be ready and dedicated to maintaining an employment opportunity. We were able to send over two gentlemen from or JRI class (Domico Dones and Jaime Giron). These two gentlemen have been employed with Philz Coffee for over a month in his warehouse on Potrero and they have been excited about this employment opportunity ever since.

As we continue to "make opportunities real" for participants of YCD, these are the types of relationships we are hoping to build and continue to foster. Small businesses that support community growth and hire people that live within these communities can and are making a big impact in San Francisco. We would like to thank Phil Jaber for his commitment to hiring residents in the community and for giving them the opportunity to show they can be successful. We would also like to thank the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency for funding our JRI services so that we can train individuals like Domico and Jaime and assist in preparing them to obtain and maintain gainful employment.

YCDtraining YCD Program Manager and Longtime Community Advocate Headed to Work for the CCSF

Mrs. Fathina Holmes has been a fixture in the Bayview Hunters Point Community for many years and a YCD employee for a total of eight. She will be moving on to work for the San Francisco Housing Authority in OEWD's 50 Van Ness office. While we wish Mrs. Holmes the best in her future endeavors, we are also sad about her departure. Some of her accomplishments at YCD include: starting off as a volunteer, moving to administrative assistant, workshop facilitator, program manager and then a move to HSA for a short stint. Upon returning to YCD Mrs. Holmes returned to her program manager duties and eventually became the interim Executive Director until a full-time ED was brought onboard.

Mrs. Holmes compassion and dedication is unmatched and will be missed by all YCD staff, other Bayview partners and most of all the participants we serve within the community.

We wish you well Mrs. Holmes and we look forward to continuing to work with you in your new role as a City and County of San Francisco Employee.

Alice GriffithAlice Griffith Housing Development "Meet and Greet"

On Saturday November 13, YCD conducted a "Meet and Greet" with the residents of the Alice Griffith Public Housing Development. The purpose of this event was to reintroduce YCD to the residents, specifically in the public housing community. Over 30 residents showed up and received information concerning YCD's services and upcoming opportunities in the Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP) community, as well as enjoyed lunch. The event was organized along with Mrs. Roanae Kent (Communities of Opportunity). YCD Education and Employment Specialists, Program Manager and Executive Director engaged with the community.

We will be conducting these same events with residents in BVHP community over the course of the next few months. We believe it is important to engage with the entire community and meet people in the environments they are most comfortable. Our next "Meet and Greet" will be in the Hunters View Public Housing development on Saturday December 11, 2010.
