The History of Labor Day
LABOR DAY 1ST 1882
FIRST LABOR DAY 1882 - NEW YORK

How it Came About; What it Means
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day
More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.
In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Labor Day Legislation
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states - Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York - created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

A Nationwide Holiday
The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday - a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership - the American worker.

Is your home's
electrical service
ready for the holidays?

If we maintained our homes as well as we maintain our cars, we would not only save money, but may even save some lives. Consider the information below provided by the US Fire Administration and FEMA...

Electrical fires in our homes claim the lives of 485 Americans each year and injure 2,305 more. Some of these fires are caused by electrical system failures and appliance defects, but many more are caused by the misuse and poor maintenance of electrical appliances, incorrectly installed wiring, and overloaded circuits and extension cords.

The United States Fire Administration (USFA) would like consumers to know that there are simple steps you can take to prevent the loss of life and property resulting from electrical fires.

The Problem
During a typical year, home electrical problems account for 67,800 fires, 485 deaths, and $868 million in property losses.

Home electrical wiring causes twice as many fires as electrical appliances.

The Facts
December is the most dangerous month for electrical fires. Fire deaths are highest in winter months which call for more indoor activities and increase in lighting, heating, and appliance use. Most electrical wiring fires start in the bedroom.

The Cause
  • Electrical Wiring - Most electrical fires result from problems with "fixed wiring" such as faulty electrical outlets and old wiring. Problems with cords and plugs, such as extension and appliance cords, also cause many home electrical fires. In urban areas, faulty wiring accounts for 33% of residential electrical fires. Many avoidable electrical fires can be traced to misuse of electric cords, such as overloading circuits, poor maintenance and running the cords under rugs or in high traffic areas.
  • Home Appliances - The home appliances most often involved in electrical fires are electric stoves and ovens, dryers, central heating units, televisions, radios and stereo systems.
Safety Precautions
  • Routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring.
  • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.
  • Use electrical extension cords wisely and don't overload them.
  • Keep electrical appliances away from wet floors and counters; pay special care to electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen.
  • Whey buying electrical appliances look for products evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Don't allow children to play with or around electrical appliances like space heaters, irons and hair dryers.
  • Keep clothes, curtains and other potentially combustible items at least three feet from all heaters.
  • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
  • Never overload extension cords or wall sockets. Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker. Use safety closures to "child-proof" electrical outlets.
  • Check your electrical tools regularly for signs of wear. If the cords are frayed or cracked, replace them. Replace any tool if it causes even small electrical shocks, overheats, shorts out or gives off smoke or sparks. Finally, having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire. And remember to practice a home escape plan frequently with your family.
If you are unsure about your electrical safety, get it checked out today! If your system is old, upgrading to today's standards will give you many years of safe use and even provide room for growth. And with our "Temporary Discounts", right now is even a better time to have your system upgraded.

RAIN DRAIN MAINTENANCE
Has this ever
happened to you?

BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS
The above image was the result of clogged stairwell drainage.

CJ IN A DRAIN
CJ cleaning out a driveway drain.

Winter rains can cause untold damage if your drainage system is not prepared to deal with it. It certainly begins with clean gutters and downspouts. But what about the drainage that receives the rain? Are they open and draining freely? And don't forget that stairwell or driveway drain. Are these draining well also?

You can check these yourself simply by running a garden hose into them with water on full. You want to use  a lot of water to insure that they will work even on a stormy day. If the water backs up right away, it may just be some debris that fell in during the summer. You can attempt to clean out the debris with a wet vac. It's better to suck the gunk out if it close to the top in order to avoid sending it down even further.

If you need some professional help, call Rooter n Drains. We'll be glad to bail you out. (pun intended). We have all the equipment, rooter machines, high pressure water jetters etc.

And don't forget, one of the "Temporary Discounts" includes a $100 off a whole house drain cleaning package. If you've never had your home's drain system cleaned as a matter of maintenance and your home is older than 20 years, a whole house drain cleaning would be a great investment.

Are You Drinking
Your Water Through These Pipes?

RUSTY PIPE EXAMPLE

Galvanized pipes are usually found in homes over 40 years in age. Commonly, these pipes will rust from the inside out. The pipes can corrode at any time however this rust accumulates over decades. Sometimes if the water is not in use and then turned on you can see that the water is brownish in color or that fixtures have become rust stained.

Eventually, the water pressure decreases and the volume is restricted from the rust build up. This occurs as a result of the pipe rusting on its interior and becoming smaller and smaller over time. Eventually the pipe becomes blocked or worse yet bursts. Ultimately these pipes must be replaced as a precaution to disaster or may be replaced after a disaster.

Doesn't it make more sense to have your system upgraded on YOUR schedule, before they rupture and cause damage?

FAQ's
  • Will my house be torn up and left with holes in the wall?
  • Answer: No. We take special care to cover furniture and protect all your property during the work. And with our re-pipes, we include the sheet rock repair as an option.
  • Will we have to move out or be without water during the process?
  • Answer: Absolutely not. We are very sensitive to your comfort while we perform our work. You may be surprised at how " un-intrusive" our re-pipes are! At no time are you without water over night.
  • Won't this kind of extensive work cost a fortune?
  • Answer: Although cost really is subjective to each individual, the cost to upgrade your home's plumbing system is an investment that will have benefits for many years to come. More water pressure, less faucet and fixture maintenance and in the worst case, avert the possibility of catastrophic failure. Also, for those who need it, we do offer financing. And don't forget about our "Temporary Recession Discounts" (see above). You can save up to $1000.00 on a whole house re-pipe package. And it's not too late to get the work done. Indeed, we do this kind of work year round and can schedule your job anytime that's convenient for you.

12 WAYS TO SAVE
ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILL
  Man w-money

1.
Keep blinds and curtains closed. If you don't have mini blinds on your windows - get them. They serve as a great insulator.

2. Install energy saving windows. Those old single pane windows really let a lot of heat and air conditioning escape.

3. Change the filters in air conditioners and furnaces. Not only does it keep systems running at optimum efficiency, it keeps the air in your home cleaner too.
4. Place window air conditioners on the shadiest side of the house. It won't have to work as hard and will use less power.

5. Make sure air conditioners and furnaces are the right size. Too small, it has to work too hard. Too large and they lose their efficiency, therefore using even more electricity.

6. Have regular checkups performed on systems. This keeps things running smoothly and could catch a problem before it's too late. Like the middle of that unexpected snow storm, or hottest ever day of the summer.

7. Keep weeds and shrubs trimmed. Keep them away from outside heating/cooling units for best airflow.

8. Plant shade trees. This is especially important on the side of the house that gets the most sun.
9. Use timers to turn lights on and off. For when you're not around, it's better than leaving a light on constantly, and also works to fool burglars.

10. Use compact fluorescent bulbs. Although they cost a little more than regular bulbs, they last up to 10 times longer and use a lot less electricity to burn.

11. Unplug appliances and electronics. Some of these items tend to keep using a little electric even when turned off.

12. Adjust the temperature before leaving the house or going to bed. Or better yet, install a programmable thermostat. It will eventually more than pay for itself.

BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS

BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS

BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS
A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
It's getting to be a real problem in our world today.  Innocent homeowners call contractors looking to have work performed on their home.  A service person shows up, and the homeowner doesn't think twice about letting that person into their home.  They presume that person is honest and coming to help them with their problem.  All too often these seemingly innocent calls turn tragic.

Not long ago, I read about a Florida woman who was killed by a registered sex offender who was performing work in her home.  In another instance, a service technician in the Minneapolis area was convicted on several counts for stealing from customers' homes.  In yet another story, an unsuspecting housewife in Missouri hired a contractor only to have him call back two weeks later and make lewd remarks over the telephone. What if this guy had done more than just make telephone calls?  You don't think about this possibly happening until it's too late.

You and your family deserve to feel comfortable and safe in your own home; to live life without fear.  Women home alone with small children, the elderly, or the disabled shouldn't have to be wary of their security when calling a contractor.  As a person who's been in this industry for years, it sickens me that this has become an issue... but it has.

Knowing this, we have made a commitment to you and all of our loyal customers.  You will never have to worry about a person from our company that enters your home or be concerned about their true intentions.  As a service to you, every single one of our employees  is background checked and drug tested.  No criminal or drug addict will ever wear one of our uniforms.  We have one of the most difficult hiring processes around, and only people of high moral character are given the opportunity to be employed by us.  We then take these hard working people and provide them with the best technical and communication training offered in the country.  So, you'll know that when one of our people shows up, they're upstanding citizens who are eager and able to help you with any and all of your home's needs.

Many contractors in the home services business do not bother to practice such stringent policies...  But that's what distinguishes us from the rest.  When you call Casey's Plumbing, Rooter n Drains or Metro's Best Electric, you know you're dealing with professionals who care about your personal safety, the safety of your family, and the well-being and security of your home.  We feel that's the least we can do for you.

Sincerely,  BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS
