THANK YOU MULTI LANGUAGE

Greetings!

Last month I sent an appeal to all of our previous clients and I am happy to report, that many of you responded.

Earlier in the year, work became so slow that we had to lay off 3 technicians. We have since then re-filled 2 of those positions.

I do, however, believe we have a long way to go before our economy stabilizes and begins to grow again. But for now, it appears that the worst may be over.

Casey's Plumbing has been around since 1984 and I have seen many changes in our economy since then. It has been my experience that the economy has always been cyclical.

And right now, this economy does have a few very positive points...
  • Very low interest rates.
  • Very low inflation.
  • Oil prices have dropped in the last 2 months.
  • A 3.3% GDP growth rate. This was a huge growth number reported in the last quarter.  Despite a weak jobs report and worsening housing data, keeping a positive growth rate in current economic conditions is truly a sign for optimism. It also means we are technically not in a recession despite all the naysayers.
  • A stronger US dollar. The dollar has rebounded strongly of late. Up around 10% against the Euro and Pound, and more than 20% against the resource driven Canadian and Australian dollars.
  • Housing affordability at its highest levels. Although this may not be good news for sellers, but clearly, it is the best time to buy in years!

If the consumer sentiment wasn't so low, I'd say things are looking much better. Unfortunately, this number has just dropped to 66 according to "The Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment". During the expansion that began in late 2001 and ended in December 2007, the index averaged 89.2.

So yes, there are a number of positive economic signs to appreciate, but until the consumer sentiment number stabilizes,  we're not completely out of the woods .

Thanks again to all of you who took advantage of our "Once in a lifetime recession discounts". And to all that may still be considering a plumbing or electrical project, these specials are still good. So don't wait until the savings are no longer available; call now before the economy returns and the discounts go away.

"MAN, PLUMBERS HAVE BECOME SO EXPENSIVE!"
BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS

As an employer and a consumer, I can say without a doubt "Plumbers are Expensive!" And though prices do vary from shop to shop, there is no such thing as a "Cheap", licensed plumber. If you're anything like me, you are probably wondering why this is so; what makes plumbers so dog gone expensive?

There are a number of factors that have attributed to this phenomena.

Supply and Demand
Each year there are more Plumbers that retire or just leave the industry to pursue other career paths than there are new people entering the trade. With the demand for skilled Plumbers now outpacing the supply, compensation levels have to increase as employers continue to get more aggressive in their recruiting strategies.

And it's not likely to improve anytime soon...
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the demand for experienced Plumbers (Fire Sprinkler fitters, Pipe fitters, Gas fitters and Steamfitters) is likely to increase by 10 - 20% over the next seven years. Based on the labor statistics from 2002, an additional 110,000 Plumbers could be needed by the year 2012.

Even in this current economic slow down, qualified plumbers can be hard to find. Because  of our workload slow down a few months ago, we had to lay off  few people. This last month our workload picked up dramatically and we had to advertise for help again. Although there were many applicants, only a very few were qualified to work for Casey's Plumbing (about 1 out of 30 who applied).

Operational Costs
The costs to operate a successful plumbing and repair truck today, are probably much more than the average consumer would realize. After finding good help, it's important to take good care of them. Here is part of an actual ad recently used in one of our ads seeking qualified plumbers...
  • Up to $50 an hour
  • Full company paid medical, dental and vision for employee and family
  • Retirement plan with company match
  • Disability insurance
  • Paid holidays and vacations

Then there is the cost of getting a rolling warehouse on wheels to your door. A good plumbing contractor will be equipped to make the vast majority of their repairs in one trip. To accomplish this, our trucks are not only stocked with enough repair parts and fixtures to plumb a small house but they also are equipped with all of the latest tools and procedures available in the industry. And to ensure that our plumbers never get rusty or complacent, they receive regular, paid weekly training.

And all this says nothing about the cost to advertise. In any healthy service company, this figure alone will usually be 10% of the gross sales. And finally, there are all the fees and taxes that are paid on a regular basis.

When it's all said and done, we would like to net a 10% profit. And even this meager goal is seldom realized.

YES quality plumbers are expensive, but consider the "cheaper solutions"...
  • You can hire your local handyman. But will he be around next year, or even next month,  if something goes wrong? And if he's not a licensed plumber, there are legal issues to consider as well when you invite them to perform plumbing work.
  • You can hire the "cheaper" plumber. This may be almost as bad as the handyman. And remember the last time you decided to have professional work done on the "cheap"? Unfortunately, we have to go behind these two examples above all the time and it's sad to see our clients forking over so much of there hard earned income when they could have saved just by calling us in the first place.
  • And of course, you can have your brother, uncle, aunt, friend do it or even maybe even do it yourself. But before you do, consider this, plumbers and electrician are required to undergo 4 years of education just to be eligible to take the state exam. Are your friends and relatives familiar with local and state code requirements? Will their work be safe?

So when you consider the huge expense of running a quality focused plumbing shop, the supply and demand of qualified plumbers and the direct costs to operate, is it any wonder that plumbers are expensive?

But a better question might be, do you receive your money's worth? Again, a good  permanent solution to your plumbing problems is always more expensive than a "quick hit and run putty wagon" solution, initially. But which one will usually last the longest? Have you ever hired a plumber for a "quick fix" only to have them right back out to do it over and over again? Or worse, you call them repeatedly and they won't return your call. In the long run, the more expensive one time permanent solution is actually less expensive and certainly better on your nerves.

At Casey's Plumbing we're proud to say that up to 70% of our recent business has been repeat business. We feel strongly about giving our clients their money's worth and value with each and every call.

The bottom line is that some things never change; quality has always been more expensive than cheap short cuts. If your are one of our current clients, I thank you for putting your trust in us and  promise to always deliver the value you are paying for. If at anytime we fail at this, you can call me personally, and I'll make it right.

POWER SURGES ARE COMMON,

and they can cost you a fortune!

SURGE ASSURE

A power surge is one form of electrical power disturbance. There are four main types of power disturbances:

  • Voltage dips (also called "sags" or "brownouts")
  • Electromagnetic interference
  • Radio frequency interference
  • Power surges (also referred to as "voltage surges" or "transient voltages")
Power surges are generally considered to be the most destructive of the four types of electrical power disturbances. Power surges are spikes in voltage. They are very brief, usually lasting millionths of a second. Power surges can vary in duration and magnitude, varying from a few hundred volts to several thousand volts. No matter where you live, your home experiences power surges.

How Does a Power Surge Cause Damage?

In the United States, most homes use electrical power in the form of 120-volt, 60 Hz, single phase, alternating current. However, the voltage is not delivered at a constant 120-volts. With alternating current the voltage rises and falls in a predetermined rhythm. The voltage oscillates from 0 to a peak voltage of 169 volts. Most appliances and electronics used in the United States are designed to be powered by this form of generated electricity. During a power surge, the voltage exceeds the peak voltage of 169 volts. A spike in voltage can be harmful to appliances and electrical devices in your home.

An increase in voltage above an appliance's normal operating voltage can cause an arc of electrical current within the appliance. The heat generated in the arc causes damage to the electronic circuit boards and other electrical components.

Your computer or stereo may continue to function after small surges occur until the integrity of the electronic components finally erode and your satellite system, cordless phone, or answering machine mysteriously stops working. Repeated, small power surges shorten the life of appliances and electronics.

What type of protection do you need?

There are different levels of surge protection, and it all depends on how much protection you want in the event of a power spike. You can purchase protection for under $20 in most electronic stores, but you get what you pay for when it comes to that surge protection.

There are three main types of surge protection electronic stores will carry: Basic, advanced and stations. Basic power surge strips have five or six outlets and will only protect your electronics moderately, and chances are if their is a spike, you will be looking to purchase a new protector and computer along with it. Advanced strips filter electricity smoother and provide grounding for your Internet and telephone connections as well. They will be able to filter voltage spikes better than basic strips but will not prevent all surges in electricity. Surge stations are the best way to go if you run a home office, small business or are heavily involved in using your computer. These fit under your computer or desk and will protect your Internet connection, phone connection and modem; they generally feature their own set of breakers and can be costly, but they will provide some of the best protection from a spike in your electrical system.

Many computer users will invest in an uninterrupted power supply and forget that it does not provide surge protection solely. Some will, but if yours does not, you will still need to invest in additional power surge protection for your UPS and computer. These units are expensive, but they will allow you to turn off your computer after a spike or blackout as well as save your data before doing so.

When it comes down to it, you have to decide what type of protection will work for your electronics and what it is worth for you. Some people can not live without their computer or television, and after spending a fortune on such systems, why would you not spend a little more and invest in power surge protection, too?

At Metro's Best Electric, we offer two stages of protection...

Phase 1 Surge Protection - It's best to stop the major surges at your electrical panel  before they travel throughout your home. Our  whole house surge protector is mounted inside the panel, out of sight and includes an LED light mounted on the door to indicate it's working. This is the minimum a home should have and we can install the entire package for only $488.00

Electrical surges can come through your cable and phone wiring as well.
We can add protection for those as well for only $199.00

Phase 2 Surge Protection - Phase 1 does a good job of protecting you from the more serious surges but smaller appliances like computers, panel TV's and stereo equipment are more sensitive and should have the additional protection of the point of use protection. This in fact is the ultimate protection and some insurance policies will only cover loses when both phase 1 and phase 2 are in place. A good point of use device will operate through multiple surges and have an led light that stays lit when it is protecting.

The Phase 2 package includes...
One - 120 VAC and phone network block complete with Software for automatic shutdown of open programs .
Two - 120 VAC with video and phone protection strips.
Two multiple and six single point of use 120 VAC with phone and video protection.

All these units and the equipment plugged into them are warranted for 10 full years!

The entire Phase 2 package is only $488.00

You can protect your entire home, phase 1 and 2, for only $1,175.00

"But I've never had equipment damaged by electricity - Why do I need this?"
Our "surgeassure™" systems are designed for those who would like peace of mind and protection for their sensitive electronics. You may not need it. However, it is possible you have had equipment damage and don't know it. Many "mysterious" computer problems such as contaminated or irretrievable files are actually due to electrical surges. Also, breakdowns and replacements of electronic equipment due to what you think of as "normal" wear and tear may actually be due to internally or externally caused surges.

If you have any questions, please contact our office and we will be glad to help.

Best of Luck!

If you need any professional advice, please give Metro's Best Electric a call  and we will be glad to help.

Drain Tips For Do It Yourselfers

When you see water backing up, stop using all drainage, including toilets, showers, dishwashers, sinks and laundry.

Identify what's causing the clog
There are different ways of dealing with different types of clogged drains. The most common reason that a drain becomes clogged is because there is hair in the drain. This is particularly true for shower drains but may occur in sink drains as well. A drain stick with barbs on the side can be run into the drain to collect the hair. This same solution won't work if you've got something, such as candle wax, that is adhered to the sides of your drains. Knowing what solution to use requires that you know what's causing the clog.

Stock up on a few simple tools
BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS  BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS   BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS   WET VAC
Drain Stick for pulling out hair

You can't do a job correctly if you don't have the right tools to do it. And you don't want to wait until you have a clogged drain to go out and buy what you need. A drain stick should be a common household item. Get one that is smooth and one with barbs. A small wet/dry vacuum is also a good item to have in the kitchen closet. And of course, every bathroom should have a plunger.

Start with natural solutions
Instead of pouring the harsh chemicals like Drano down your drains, try out a solution that is based in natural ingredients. A strong vinegar-and-lemon solution might do the trick if you just have some build-up that is caking the sides of your drain.

Take it apart and use some elbow grease
If you are handy in the home repair department, you can take apart the pipes of your drain and clean them out. A toothbrush and scrubbing pad should do the trick. Just make sure that you know what you're doing before you start dismantling your plumbing. You don't want to get the whole thing taken apart and make it shiny brand new if you don't know how to put it back together again!

Prevention
The best thing that you can do to clean your drains properly is to prevent them from getting clogged in the first place. Use a strainer to catch hair so that it doesn't get caught in the drain. Run a natural solution down the drain on a biweekly basis. Prevent problems before they occur. At the other end of the spectrum, don't assume that you can take care of everything yourself. If you've dug out the hair, run the solution and dislodged gunk with the wet/dry vacuum and you still have a clogged drain, you need to call a plumber. You don't want to do damage to the pipes that make your home run smoothly!

DO NOT USE CHEMICAL DRAIN OPENERS

In our opinion, regardless of what it says on the label, none are good for pipes. They all have to have an element that is strong enough to eat or dissolve a clog and that means they are corrosive, bad for your pipes.

Then, call Rooter - n- Drains so we can get right out and solve the problem.

Summer Picnic
Chicken, Red Skinned Potato Salad, Buttermilk Biscuits and Sweet-n-Tart Strawberry Salad
BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS Better Than Best Fried Chicken
SUBMITTED BY: CANDY WOO LI  / PHOTO BY: SKITLES
"Simply delicious fried chicken using, of all things, cream of chicken soup! The other key ingredient is cornstarch. The end result will surprise you. It will be perfect - crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and loaded with mouthwatering flavor. This chicken will definitely be requested on a regular basis by family and friends!"

PREP TIME 15 Min
COOK TIME 30 Min
READY IN 45 Min

SERVINGS  4

INGREDIENTS
  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 egg
  • seasoning salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • oil for frying

DIRECTIONS

In a shallow dish or bowl combine the soup, egg and seasoning salt (be careful, as soup is already salted); mix together. Dip chicken in mixture and turn to coat completely. Set aside.

In a resealable plastic bag mix together the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper. One at a time, place chicken pieces in bag, seal and shake to coat. Add more flour and/or cornstarch as necessary, but add them in equal parts (there should be an equal amount of each in the mixture).
Place coated chicken on a platter and allow to sit until it becomes doughy (this is critical, to ensure crispiness when fried). Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat; be sure to use enough oil to cover chicken pieces. Once chicken is doughy, test oil by dropping a piece of the 'dough' into it; the oil is ready when it starts to fry immediately.
Fry chicken pieces in oil for about 7 to 10 minutes each, or until cooked through and juices run clear. Drain on paper towels and serve.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
It's getting to be a real problem in our world today.  Innocent homeowners call contractors looking to have work performed on their home.  A service person shows up, and the homeowner doesn't think twice about letting that person into their home.  They presume that person is honest and coming to help them with their problem.  All too often these seemingly innocent calls turn tragic.

Not long ago, I read about a Florida woman who was killed by a registered sex offender who was performing work in her home.  In another instance, a service technician in the Minneapolis area was convicted on several counts for stealing from customers' homes.  In yet another story, an unsuspecting housewife in Missouri hired a contractor only to have him call back two weeks later and make lewd remarks over the telephone. What if this guy had done more than just make telephone calls?  You don't think about this possibly happening until it's too late.

You and your family deserve to feel comfortable and safe in your own home; to live life without fear.  Women home alone with small children, the elderly, or the disabled shouldn't have to be wary of their security when calling a contractor.  As a person who's been in this industry for years, it sickens me that this has become an issue... but it has.

Knowing this, we have made a commitment to you and all of our loyal customers.  You will never have to worry about a person from our company that enters your home or be concerned about their true intentions.  As a service to you, every single one of our employees  is background checked and drug tested.  No criminal or drug addict will ever wear one of our uniforms.  We have one of the most difficult hiring processes around, and only people of high moral character are given the opportunity to be employed by us.  We then take these hard working people and provide them with the best technical and communication training offered in the country.  So, you'll know that when one of our people shows up, they're upstanding citizens who are eager and able to help you with any and all of your home's needs.

Many contractors in the home services business do not bother to practice such stringent policies...  But that's what distinguishes us from the rest.  When you call Casey's Plumbing, Rooter n Drains or Metro's Best Electric, you know you're dealing with professionals who care about your personal safety, the safety of your family, and the well-being and security of your home.  We feel that's the least we can do for you.
