First, I would like to thank you for taking the time in your busy schedule to read another Casey's Plumbing News Letter. This month I am packing in a lot of useful information that will help you with your home's maintenance as well as some once in a lifetime offers for plumbing and electrical service. The 4th of July is a wonderful time for family, fun and picnics. It's also a popular time for do it your-selfers to complete their "Honey Do" lists. I've got a pretty lengthy one myself. But mine will take a great deal more time than just a long weekend to complete!

The freedom we enjoy here is 2nd to none of any other country on earth! Sure there are political divides and disagreements but remember, it is you and I individually who decide how we will be represented and by whom.

12 WAYS TO LOWER YOUR ELECTRICAL BILL
|

1. Keep blinds and curtains closed. If you don't have mini blinds on your windows - get them. They serve as a great insulator.
2. Install energy saving windows. Those old single pane windows really let a lot of heat and air conditioning escape.
3. Change the filters in air conditioners and furnaces. Not only does it keep systems running at optimum efficiency, it keeps the air in your home cleaner too.
4. Place window air conditioners on the shadiest side of the house. It won't have to work as hard and will use less power.
5. Make sure air conditioners and furnaces are the right size. Too small, it has to work too hard. Too large and they lose their efficiency, therefore using even more electricity.
6. Have regular checkups performed on systems. This keeps things running smoothly and could catch a problem before it's too late. Like the middle of that unexpected snow storm, or hottest ever day of the summer.
7. Keep weeds and shrubs trimmed. Keep them away from outside heating/cooling units for best airflow.
8. Plant shade trees. This is especially important on the side of the house that gets the most sun.
9. Use timers to turn lights on and off. For when you're not around, it's better than leaving a light on constantly, and also works to fool burglars.
10. Use compact fluorescent bulbs. Although they cost a little more than regular bulbs, they last up to 10 times longer and use a lot less electricity to burn.
11. Unplug appliances and electronics. Some of these items tend to keep using a little electric even when turned off.
12. Adjust the temperature before leaving the house or going to bed. Or better yet, install a programmable thermostat. It will eventually more than pay for itself.

Add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes; drain and chop.
- Place eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil; cover, remove from heat, and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water; peel and chop.
- In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, eggs, celery, sweet relish, garlic, mustard, mayonnaise and salt and pepper. Gently mix together and serve warm.

4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
1 egg
seasoning salt to taste
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
salt and pepper to taste
oil for frying

DIRECTIONS

In a shallow dish or bowl combine the soup, egg and seasoning salt (be
careful, as soup is already salted); mix together. Dip chicken in
mixture and turn to coat completely. Set aside.

In a resealable plastic bag mix together the flour, cornstarch, garlic
powder, paprika, salt and pepper. One at a time, place chicken pieces
in bag, seal and shake to coat. Add more flour and/or cornstarch as
necessary, but add them in equal parts (there should be an equal amount
of each in the mixture).

Place coated chicken on a platter and allow to sit until it becomes
doughy (this is critical, to ensure crispiness when fried). Heat oil in
a deep skillet over medium heat; be sure to use enough oil to cover
chicken pieces. Once chicken is doughy, test oil by dropping a piece of
the 'dough' into it; the oil is ready when it starts to fry
immediately.

Fry chicken pieces in oil for about 7 to 10 minutes each, or until
cooked through and juices run clear. Drain on paper towels and serve.

'The recipe comes from a charming tearoom in a historic home that my mother and I enjoy visiting.'" SERVINGS 4 INGREDIENTS2 medium lemons 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 cups milk 3 cups club soda, chilled 2 drops yellow food coloring (optional) Additional sugar DIRECTIONS- Remove ends from lemons and discard. Remove lemon peel with a knife; set aside. Quarter lemons; squeeze juice into a bowl. Remove and discard white membrane. Place the peel and pulp in a blender or food processor; cover and process until coarsely chopped. Add peel mixture and sugar to lemon juice; mix well. Let stand for 30 minutes.
- Stir in milk. Strain lemon mixture; add club soda and food coloring if desired. Serve immediately in sugar-rimmed glasses if desired.We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a
retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary
depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the
specific type of oil used.

4th of July - The history |
In the United States, Independence Day,
commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the
adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring
independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
The Declaration of Independence was
unanimously declared by the thirteen United States of America. It was adopted
by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. The task of
getting the document signed began on August 2, 1776. Congress had to ensure
that all states would have access to an authenticated copy of the Declaration
and did so by ordering a special printing of multiple copies on January 18,
1777.
Although celebrated upon publication,
the Declaration was initially neglected following the American Revolution.
Its symbolic stature grew over the
years, most notably through the influence of Abraham Lincoln, who viewed the
Declaration as an ideal for which the nation should strive, especially as
expressed in Jefferson's famous preamble:
'We
hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they
are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these
are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.'
In 1776 in Philadelphia the Declaration
of Independence was read publicly on July 8. In Williamsburg, a celebration
occurred on July 25. Trenton, NJ proclaimed its independence with a gathering
of the militia and citizens: "The declaration, and other proceedings, were
received with loud acclamations" 26 July. In New York, the "Declaration of
Independence was read at the head of each brigade of the continental army
posted at and near New York, and every where received with loud huzzas and the
utmost demonstrations of joy."
The following is a description of the
event as printed in a local newspaper in 1777:
Yesterday
the 4th of July, being the Anniversary of the Independence of the United States
of America, was celebrated in this city with demonstration of joy and
festivity. About noon all the armed ships and gallies in the river were drawn
up before the city, dressed in the gayest manner, with the colours of the
United States and streamers displayed. At one o'clock, the yards being properly
manned, they began the celebration of the day by a discharge of thirteen cannon
from each of the ships, and one from each of the thirteen gallies, in honour of
the Thirteen United States. In the afternoon an elegant dinner was prepared for
Congress, to which were invited the President and Supreme Executive Council,
and Speaker of the Assembly of this State, the General Officers and Colonels of
the army, and strangers of eminence, and the members of the several Continental
Boards in town. The Hessian band of music taken in Trenton the 26th of December
last, attended and heightened the festivity with some fine performances suited
to the joyous occasion, while a corps of British deserters, taken into the
service of the continent by the State of Georgia, being drawn up before the
door, filled up the intervals with feux de joie. After dinner a number of
toasts were drank, all breaking independence, and a generous love of liberty,
and commemorating the memories of those brave and worthy patriots who gallantly
exposed their lives, and fell gloriously in defence of freedom and the
righteous cause of their country. Each toasts was followed by a discharge of
artillery and small arms, and a suitable piece of music by the Hessian band.
The glorious fourth of July was reiterated three times accompanied with triple
discharges of cannon and small arms, and loud huzzas that resounded from street
to street through the city. Towards evening several troops of horse, a corps of
artillery, and a brigade of North Carolina forces, which was in town on its way
to join the grand army, were drawn up in Second street and reviewed by Congress
and the General Officers. The evening was closed with the ringing of bells, and
at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks, which began and concluded
with thirteen rockets on the commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.
Every thing was conducted with the greatest order and decorum, and the face of
joy and gladness was universal. Thus may the 4th of July, that glorious and
ever memorable day, be celebrated through America, by the sons of freedom, from
age to age till time shall be no more. Amen, and amen (Virginia Gazette, 18
July 1777).
The original handwritten copy of the
Declaration of Independence has not survived.
On July 19, 1776 Congress ordered a
copy be "engrossed" (hand written in fair script on parchment by an expert
penman) for the delegates to sign.
The first and most famous signature on
the engrossed copy was that of John Hancock, President of the Continental
Congress. Two future presidents, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, were among
the signatories. Edward Rutledge (age 26), was the youngest signer, and
Benjamin Franklin (age 70) was the oldest signer. The fifty-six signers of the
Declaration represented the new states as follows (from North to South):

23 ways to save on your grocery bills |
Food is one of the biggest expenses, along with housing and cars, in most people's budget. If you're looking for ways to cut back on your budget, the food category should be one thing you look at closely; there's almost always ways to cut your spending here.
First, eat out less and cook your own food more - this will save tons of money right off the bat. But frugal grocery shopping can be an art - and with a little planning, can also be a lot of fun. Here are several tips to save you some big bucks over the long term.
1. Always go with a list. If you go without a list, you may as well just throw your money away. Prepare a list of everything you need, making sure you have everything needed for your weekly menu (next tip) and checking to make sure you don't have it in your pantry, fridge or freezer. Make sure you're not forgetting anything. Now stick to that list - don't buy anything not on the list.
2. Plan out a weekly menu. This is the best way to ensure that your list is complete, and that you have enough to serve your family dinner for the week. You can plan a weekly menu and then duplicate it for the next week - this way you can shop for two weeks at once. Be sure to plan a leftovers night.
3. Don't go when you're hungry. This is a common tip, but it's true - when you're hungry, you want to buy all kinds of junk. You'll end up spending a lot more. Eat a good meal first, and you'll be more likely to stick to your list.
4. Have a budget. When you go to the store, know exactly how much you can spend. Then try your best to stick within that limit. If you don't know how much you can spend, you'll certainly spend too much. Keep a running tally as you shop to ensure that you're within your budget.
5. Make a pantry checklist. Make a checklist of everything you normally stock in your pantry. Keep it posted on the pantry. Put a slash next to each item for the number of items you have (if you have two cans of stewed tomatoes, put two slashes). Then, when you use something, turn the slash into an X. This makes it much easier when it comes time to make your list.
6. Keep your receipts, then enter into a spreadsheet. This will be your price list. Use it so you know when bulk or sale items are a good deal. It's also a great way to comparison shop between stores - buy your baking goods in Store A but your fresh fruits in Store B. The spreadsheet can also serve as a checklist to use when you're compiling your shopping list.
7. Shop online. Lots and lots of items - more than 22,000 - are now available for quick and easy purchase online at Amazon.com's new grocery section. The majority of the prices really can't be beat. 8. Buy frozen veggies. While fresh veggies are a little better, frozen veggies are almost as good, and much better than nothing. And since you can keep them in the freezer, they rarely go bad.
9. Cut back on meat. Meat is expensive. Plan vegetarian meals several times a week (think pasta or chili) and for other meals, you could just use a little meat as a kind of seasoning instead of the main ingredient - think Asian, Indian and other such cultural food.
10. Cook a lot, then freeze. Plan to cook a big amount of food - a whole mess of spaghetti, for example - and freeze it for multiple dinners. A great idea is to use one Sunday and cook a week's (or even a month's) worth of dinners. Plan 5-6 freezable dinners and cook them all at once.
11. Every store has specials. Be sure to look for them in the newspaper, or when you get to the store (they often have unadvertised specials - look on the higher and lower shelves for deals). Don't buy them unless they're things you always use.
12. Try the store brands. Brand names are often no better than generic, and you're paying for all the advertising they do to have a brand name. Give the store brand a try, and often you won't notice a difference. Especially if it's an ingredient in a dish where you can't taste the quality of that individual ingredient
13. Cut back on your "one-item" trips. They waste gas, and almost inevitably, you buy more than that one item. If you plan ahead, make a weekly menu, and shop with a list, this should drastically reduce the number of trips you make for a small number of items. But if you still find yourself running out for a few items, analyze the reason - are you not making a good list, are you forgetting some items from your list? Avoid trips to the corner store. Or the gas station! These are some of the most expensive stores. (Ranking right up there with airport stores.)
14. Sugar cereals are a bad buy. Lots of money for no nutrition. Look for whole grain cereals with low sugar. Add fruit for better flavor.
15. When there's a sale, stock up. Sale items can be a great deal. If it's an item you normally use, buy a bunch of them.
16. Plan one big trip a month for bulk staples. You can get fresh items at another store on other weeks, but doing a big bulk trip will cut back on the expense and amount you have to carry for the other three weeks. Avoid buying on impulse at the bulk store too - just because they sell a lot of it doesn't mean you're saving, if you weren't planning on buying it in the first place. Buy in bulk only when it makes sense. If you can save money, over the course of a month or two, by buying in bulk, plan to do so. But be sure that you're going to use all of it before it gets bad - it isn't cheaper to buy in bulk if you don't use it.
17. Think deep freeze. If you really want to save, you'll need a big freezer. Ask around - someone you know might have a relatively new model they don't need anymore. You can use freezers to stock up on meat, frozen veggies, and similar staples, and to freeze big batches of pasta, casseroles, and other dinners you prepare ahead of time.
18. Don't waste leftovers. Have a list on your fridge of what leftovers are in there, so you don't forget about them. Plan a leftover night or two, so you're sure to eat them all. Pack them immediately for lunch, so they're ready to take the next morning.
19. Don't buy junk food (or buy as little as possible). Junk food not only costs a lot of money for about zero nutrition, but it makes you and your family fat and kills you slowly. Talk about a bad deal! Opt for fruits and veggies instead.
20. Go when the kids are in school. When you bring kids, they will pester you and pester you until you buy some kind of junk food. Even if you're able to stick to your guns, it's not pleasant saying no 10 million times. In most cases, you'll save money shopping without the kids.
21. Use store savings cards. These can add up to big savings over the long run.
22. Avoid frozen dinners or prepared entrees. Again, these cost way more and are usually much less nutritious.
23. Drink water. If you regularly drink iced tea, Tang, Kool-aid, sodas or other types of drinks, cut those out completely and just drink water. It's much better for you, and much cheaper.

It's getting to be a real problem in our world today. Innocent homeowners call contractors looking to have work performed on their home. A service person shows up, and the homeowner doesn't think twice about letting that person into their home. They presume that person is honest and coming to help them with their problem. All too often these seemingly innocent calls turn tragic.
Not long ago, I read about a Florida woman who was killed by a registered sex offender who was performing work in her home. In another instance, a service technician in the Minneapolis area was convicted on several counts for stealing from customers' homes. In yet another story, an unsuspecting housewife in Missouri hired a contractor only to have him call back two weeks later and make lewd remarks over the telephone. What if this guy had done more than just make telephone calls? You don't think about this possibly happening until it's too late.
You and your family deserve to feel comfortable and safe in your own home; to live life without fear. Women home alone with small children, the elderly, or the disabled shouldn't have to be wary of their security when calling a contractor. As a person who's been in this industry for years, it sickens me that this has become an issue... but it has.
