Casey's Logo 09      FEBUARY 2009

Greetings!

I sincerely hope you and those close to you have a very happy Valentine's Day! This can be easier said than done however, when everywhere we look someone or something is telling us "how bad things are". If you are among the nine percent of Oregonians who are without a job, I know it must be tough and I pray for you and all those seeking work every day. But let's consider another perspective. What would be a reason to be optimistic (and oh I hate this mantra) "in this economy"?

There are a number of things to be optimistic about...

  • 91%  of Oregonians who want to work, are.
  • Interest rates are the lowest they've been since World War 2.
  • Women are slowly gaining power and influence in our society. Young women are better educated and better informed than any generation in our history.
  • We live in a country where we really can, reach heights in our businesses and in our personal lives, not available to most in other countries.
The list can go on and will ultimately reflect  what our focus and desires are. And therein lies the key; what are you focusing on?

This Valentines Day, try this. Turn off your TV and radio. Associate with positive people as much as possible. Avoid situations that induce stress and tension. And finally, reach out to some one you cherish and surprise them with something special, like your undivided attention.

CP WATER SAVING REBATE PORTLAND

Virtually every water district in the Portland metro area is offering home owners $100 to install the new 1.28 gallon water saving toilet. And if you are in to saving money and helping the environment, why not upgrade your toilets and do both!

Beginning January 1, 2009, the Portland Water Bureau will offer a short-term toilet rebate on WaterSense certified toilets. Portland Water Bureau customers can apply for the $100 rebate by replacing a toilet that uses 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or more with a new WaterSense toilet.  To earn the WaterSense label, toilets must use no more than 1.28 gallons per flush (gpf) and meet rigorous criteria for performance.

WaterSense Toilet Rebate Program Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Complete and sign WaterSense Toilet Rebate Form by June 30, 2009. Sales receipt and proof of recycling of old toilet required.
  • You must receive water from the Portland Water Bureau and have an active Portland Water Bureau account that is in good standing.
  • You must own the property where the new toilet is being installed or obtain the signature of the property owner on the WaterSense Toilet Rebate Form.
  • Limit of 2 toilet rebates per eligible account.
Each rebate is worth $100. However, if the replacement toilet costs less than $100 the customer will be reimbursed for the cost of the toilet plus $1 for recycling.

Rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The program will end when funds are depleted or no later than June 30, 2009

Flooded Basements. We Have a Cure!

BRENDA 07 CHRISTMAS

The excessive snow and resulting melt off caused flooding for home owners all over the greater Portland area. And the coming rainy season will certainly bring even more flooding.

In many cases, home owners did have a sump pump system in place but because of the volume or maybe a power outage, they still ended up with a mess.

We have a solution that will not only keep the water out as needed but includes a "non-electric" backup system in case of power failure. These systems are a little spendy but when it comes to the protection of your home and it's contents, it really is a bargain!

Fireman house on fire
North Charleston, SC -
A fire broke out at a mobile home off of Stafford Road in North Charleston, fully engulfing the residence and displacing the family of six.
The North Charleston Fire Department responded to the fire.  It took 10-15 firefighters to put the flames out, due to heavy and violent winds in the area.

No one was injured.

NCPD Battalion Chief Eric Phillips said the fire was caused by an electrical short.

The family is being assisted by the Red Cross tonight.

Each year, electrical fires in our homes claim the lives of 485 Americans and injure 2,305 more. Some of these fires are caused by electrical system failures and appliance defects, but many more are caused by the misuse and poor maintenance of electrical appliances, incorrectly installed wiring, and overloaded circuits and extension cords.

Metro's Best Electric is offering $75.00 off of any complete home electrical evaluation. This includes testing the circuit loads, testing all receptacles and switches as well as the entire lighting load.

Call today to see if an evaluation would be in your best interest.

Recipe of the Month
Green Beans with Sautéed Fennel and Garlic
Shana Larsen, Ready, Set, Eat

Instead of the heavy, traditional Green Bean Bake made with Cream of Mushroom Soup and Crispy Fried Onions, try Green Beans with Sautéed Fennel and Garlic instead!  Just as flavorful, but with fewer calories!

1 Tbsp. Olive oil
1 large fresh fennel bulb, julienned
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 pound green beans, trimmed
salt and pepper to taste

In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and fennel bulb.  Sauté on low to medium-low heat for about 20-30 minutes, or until caramelized.  Add garlic and cook until fragrant.

Increase heat and add green beans.  Cook only until they turn bright green, about 10 minutes.  Season with salt and pepper.  Serve immediately. Serves 4.
