From the Minister

water communion

Summer is coming to a close - and although that is a bittersweet truth, the sooner it takes the heat away, the happier I'll be.

The other thing that makes me happy about summer coming to an end is that we're beginning another church year with our Homecoming and Water Communion on Sept 9th.The Water Communion is a wonderful way to celebrate our diverse community. Please bring water to the church from places sacred and meaningful to you, from near or far -- your home tap, a beach, winter's snows, or another beloved body of water. The combined water is symbolic of our shared faith coming from many different sources. It will be used later in the year in our child dedication ceremony.

This year begins with so much that is new and full of possibility: with all the transition of the past few years now settled, we have a new Office Administrator, Jennifer Duston, who is already helping find ways to make us more efficient, and soon, a new Director of Faith Development as well. This year is a year in which we need to get ourselves settled, too, but on a new direction forward. We have the opportunity to decide what sort of congregation we wish to be, what kinds of growth we want to nurture, what we will be in the wider world. Some things we know already: we want to support a strong RE program, we want to offer wonderful opportunities for fellowship and have a strong congregational life, we want to make a difference with our social justice partners, like the Night Ministry, UUSC, and Latino Union.

What is exciting for me about this year is that we can really plan for the future together - so keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to be a part of this planning. Whether in Board chats and COM chats, in meetings with the minister, or in the committees and teams that make the life of the church possible, your participation will make this church ever more vibrant and alive!

This church is the community of ourselves...we need your voices, dreams, and passions, to create the community that we most hope to become. I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing where you bring us life!

Faithfully,

Rev. Adam

Adult Faith Development This Fall

books

Would you like to take a class? Offer a class? We're beginning our adult faith development opportunities in October this year, and hope that we'll be able to add more into the schedule.

Making Peace with Your Religious Past will run Thursdays from October 4-November 1, from 7-9pm at 2U. Taught by Rev. Adam Robersmith, this five session course is for anyone who would like to examine their religious history, whether UU or something else. We'll look at the things you appreciate, the things you'd like to leave behind, and how you can work with your religious past as an asset to your religious present.

Small Group Ministry sessions will begin mid-October, with sessions that will run all year long, some twice per month, and at least one once per month. We'll also have at least one session that will be 8 weeks in a row. We'll begin sign-ups for the groups in mid-September.

Once, at 2U... is something Rev. Adam would love to create with your help! He'd love for people to present a topic (create a discussion, share a passion, debate an issue) just once, once a month. If you'd be willing to create a one-time discussion with Rev. Adam's help, and we can find enough people to present between September and May, we'll have an amazing variety of discussions that we can all participate in, learn a bit more about one another, and come away knowing something more about just about anything! Please send Rev. Adam an email at minister@secondunitarian.org or call him at (630) 414-5340 with your ideas.

2U Fall Fest - Harvesting Our Treasures
Wheat Stained Glass

Saturday, October 20, 2012

Our annual fundraiser and community gathering is coming up soon! There are many ways for you to be involved with the event. Please stay tuned for more information in future Anvils and live announcements at Sunday services. One way to support the effort right away. . .

Call for hosts & donations:

We're seeking contributions for the silent auction.  Like last year, the main items will be parties/events hosted by 2U members for 6-20 people.  Last year some of the fun events included: a pool party, a hootenanny, a scrabble party, a winery tour, a Mardi Gras beer tasting party, and more! Let your spirit of fellowship and creativity run wild!

Not really a party host but have a special talent to share?  We'd be grateful for you to offer to contribute to the fun and fundraising by offering your time or talents to the silent auction.

Please email Laura McKee at mckeelaura@gmail.com with any questions, or contact Arthur Mitchell or David Gutowsky in church with any questions or for help brainstorming.  We can't wait to highlight the treasures in our community this year!

Choir Corner

Farewell Community Yoga
What a great summer this was. I feel honored to have practiced yoga with you all. However it's time to shift focus onto other projects.

A warm thank you to each and every one of you who shared your practice with us, either in body or spirit. If it was your first time trying yoga, thank you for sharing your bravery. If you kept returning each week, thank you for your dedication. Keep it up!

This is not the end but just a beginning. I will keep you posted on future classes, and I look forward to practicing yoga with you again.
