Welcome Our New DFD, Kellie Kelly!

Kellie 01

Although a Chicago native, Kellie lived the last ten years across the country: Los Angeles (where she learned that it can be 70 degrees in February), Honolulu (where she learned how to weed a taro field), and Norfolk (where she learned that pollen can look like yellow snow). Now after her travels, Kellie is happy to call Chicago home yet again and make it her six-year-old son's home, too.

Kellie has been an enthusiastic UU since 2001. Kellie was raised Roman Catholic, but Catholicism felt more like a nationality to her, instead of being a religion to consciously practice and believe. In high school, Kellie began to explore religion and spirituality. Kellie's exploration ultimately brought her to Unitarian Universalism.

Kellie began her undergraduate degree as an aspiring theatre major at Northwestern University. Three universities and three majors later, Kellie completed her Bachelor of English from the University of Maryland in May 2012, more than twenty years after she started it. Along the way, she built a career in sales management and technical recruiting, served as a volunteer U.S. Navy Family Ombudsman, and acted on the board of a local mothers' support organization.

Kellie will be entering the Master of Divinity program at Meadville Lombard Theological School next year. Kellie feels that her call to ministry will allow her to impact our world--connecting people to their personal divinity one person at a time. Kellie wholeheartedly believes that one of the greatest strengths of our UU faith is our ability to encourage, direct, support, and celebrate the spirit of our young members. Kellie is thrilled to start her path to ministry in Children and Youth Faith Development and is over the moon to be here at 2U!

2U Fall Fest - Harvesting Our Treasures

Saturday, October 20, 2012

6:00 - 10:00 pm

2U's annual fall fundraiser is just around the corner! Buy your tickets here. There is still plenty to do to make the evening fun for everyone. Please join in on the fun!

Party Hosts

Like last year, the main silent auction items will be parties/events hosted by 2U members for 6-20 people. Last year some of the fun events included: a pool party, a hootenanny, a Scrabble party, a winery tour, a Mardi Gras beer tasting party, and more! Let your spirit of fellowship and creativity run wild! Please email Laura McKee at mckeelaura@gmail.com to donate or discuss your idea.

Silent Auction Help

Not really a party host, but have a special talent to share?  We'd be grateful for you to contribute to the fun and fundraising by offering your time or talents to the silent auction. We are hoping to create a silent auction full of one-of-a-kind donations from our members - e.g., are you good at a craft? Why not donate a lesson for the congregation to bid on? Are you a handyman/ handywoman? Why not donate a few hours of service? Please email Laura McKee at mckeelaura@gmail.com to donate or discuss your idea.

Dessert Donations

Bakers, we need your help too! Would you be willing to provide a fall dessert to be served that evening? Oh...and would you make another one at a future date that would go to the highest bidder in the Silent Auction? Use that "I love the smell of fall spices in the air" feeling to make others happy with a yummy dessert and to raise money for 2U. Please contact Rose Broome at 773-472-0190 or broomert@att.net if you are able to make a donation or have questions.

Have other ideas or want to get involved? We welcome your help so we can make this a true community event! Contact Kimberly Bares at kimberlybares@yahoo.com if you have an idea for other ways to contribute.

Young Adult Patchwork Service

Sunday, September 23rd 10:30 am

Living in the Question:

Young Adulthood and Unitarian-Universalism.

Margaret Redlich, Erin Rusmi, and David Dyer will reflect on what Unitarian-Universalism means to them at this time in their lives. During constant changes, Unitarian-Universalism offers a supportive continuing community and encouragement in finding a way to make peace with not knowing all the answers.

Making Peace with Your Religious Past

Thursday evenings, October 4-November 1

7:00-9:00 pm

Taught by Rev. Adam Robersmith, this five-session course is for anyone who would like to examine their religious hisInterfaith treetory, whether UU or anything else. We'll look at the things you appreciate, the things you'd like to leave behind, and how you can begin to work with your religious past so that you can be fully present here and now.

The class is limited to 12 participants, so please sign up on the What's Happening table in the Palmer Room. If you have questions, please contact Rev. Adam directly at minister@secondunitarian.org.
Child Dedication

Sunday, October 21, 2012

Each spring and fall, we at 2U share in the dedication of members' children who have come into our community. Whether babies or teenagers, we celebrate and welcome all those who have not yet come of age, and offer up our promise to be alongside them as they grow in their faith. If you and your children would like to participate in the upcoming child dedication ceremony on October 21, please contact Director of Faith Development Kellie Kelly at dfd@secondunitarian.org, or by phone at 773-549-0260 ext. 12.
Our Whole Lives

OWLHave a friend or relative in the Chicago area with 7th - 9th grade children? Many parents are concerned about the inadequate sex education their children receive through the school system. The Unitarian Universalist Association offers Our Whole Lives - a holistic curriculum that covers a wide variety of topics related to sexual awareness and health.  Second Unitarian's Life-span Faith Development Council is offering OWL sexuality education for grades 7 - 9 for our youth this fall.

Our Whole Lives Values

  • Self Worth
  • Sexual Health
  • Responsibility
  • Justice and Inclusivity

 We need your help to get the word out. Our group is small, and the program works better with a larger group. If you know a family that would benefit from this type of education, please contact caretaker Mary Sue Barrett at marysuebarrett@gmail.com (phone 773-477-5320) for materials to forward (via email) or pick up a brochure on the Information Table in the Palmer Room after church. Encourage parents to attend a required Parent Information meeting at Second Unitarian Church on Sunday, 9/23 from 1:00 - 3:00.

Public Interfaith Prayer in support of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Saturday September 15th, 11:30am in Lincoln Park

RSVP: chicagouuya@cmwd-uua.org

Unitarian Universalists have been called upon by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and Interfaith Action to join in a public interfaith prayer. This event will be part of a series of actions that target Chipotle to partner with the Fair Food Program.

On Saturday September 15th we'll join with other people of faith around Chicago to support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in demanding fair wages and respect for workers' rights. The coalition sends a special invitation to youth and young adults to join. This will be the kickoff event for the newly forming Chicago Network of UU Young Adults. You can contact Megan with any questions.
September Plate Sharing Recipient: TPAN

The Test Positive Aware Network's mission is to empower everyone living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS to live open, healthy, and productive lives.  TPAN innovates to deliver peer-led support programs and collaborative wellness services and to communicate comprehensive information.  TPAN will do so until HIV/AIDS is eradicated.

TPAN's vision is to be a nationally recognized model of a community-based organization providing comprehensive health and wellness programs to everyone impacted by HIV/AIDS while following the "E-A-S-I-E-R" core values:

  • Empowerment: Encouraging individuals to face challenges and to overcome biases by providing tools, resources and support that promote self-sufficiency, productivity and personal/professional development;
  • Adaptability: Identifying the changing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS and implementing innovative and effective services and programs that meet those needs;
  • Sex Positive: Affirming sexuality as an integral part of being human and providing support, knowledge and services that enable everyone to enjoy a full, responsible sex life without stigma or judgment;
  • Inclusiveness: Recognizing strengths, showcasing differences and seeking opportunities to further understanding of all individuals;
  • Excellence: Exceeding the highest level of expectations of clients, staff and donors
  • Respect: Considering the feelings, ideas and rights of others while maintaining integrity through honest, open and fair interaction.

I've been HIV+ for 28 years now. Most of my adult life, I've volunteered in various HIV/AIDS capacities. For the past several years, I've been a TPAN volunteer, facilitating the LIFE (Learning Immune Function Enhancement) and MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) programs and POZ Yoga classes. Several 2U congregants have been TPAN clients as well (their identities are confidential and private).  September 27 is National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day this year. Use condoms. Get tested. If you're positive, seek treatment and support. TPAN provides a wide variety of wholistic support services. As a person of faith and minister, I'm public about my HIV status to help reduce the stigma and prejudice associated with HIV/AIDS. Please donate generously to TPAN. Thank you.
