From the Minister

As we move toward our Homecoming service on September 9th (don't forget to bring a little water from a place you cherish for the Water Communion!), I am glad to be able to tell you that we are one large step closer to having our staff changes settled. Chris Engler, our Business Manager, has completed his training and taken a position as a special education teacher for 6th, 7th and 8th graders at Brentano Elementary Math and Science Academy. He will be leaving us by the end of the month. Please drop him a note or give a phone call to wish him well in his new career and offer thanks for his service to us through the past few years!

Last spring, the Board and I decided that we would look for a full-time Office Administrator/Bookkeeper and a half-time Director of Faith Development to simplify our staffing structure, once our Business Manager and Director of Programs were moving on to their new jobs. We began the search in the middle of July and found ourselves with many applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences for the role of Office Administrator. In the end, we found that the person with the best fit of skills and interests for our needs was Jennifer Duston. With joy and an optimistic eye toward the future, I am glad to welcome her to the staff of 2U and to the service of our faith in a new way! You'll be able to reach Jen at office@secondunitarian.org, and she'll be reading email sent to programs@secondunitarian.org for the time being, as well. Keep an eye here and on the website as we get our new contact information and office hours established.

Faithfully, and happily,

Rev. Adam

JWD for Anvil

Jennifer Duston is a novice quilter, an embarrassingly competitive scrabble player, and a lifelong lover of books. Coming from nine years as the bookkeeper and office manager of a small family business, she is more than a little bit excited to put her experience and compulsive organizing skills to use in the newly-minted position of Office Administrator at 2U. She sings alto in the 2U choir, and is perpetually amazed by the beauty that's created when many voices weave together. She lives in Evanston with her husband Tyler and three very noisy cats.

Farewell from our Business Manager

school books

 My Dear Second Unitarian Church,

For the past 3 years, 1 month and 16 days the 2U basement was my weekday morning home as your Business Manager. I felt privileged to work with such wonderful people like Adam and Gabrielle in addition to serving a kind and understanding board of trustees and congregation that made my blending of grad school and work relatively easy.

At the end of August I will end my employment at 2U and begin teaching Special Education at Brentano Math and Science Academy working with 6th, 7th, and 8th, graders who think a little differently. It feels great to be normal again; that is, entering a new career for the 3rd time.

Peace be with you all,

Chris Engler

Sun/Moon Group: An Invitation to You

The Sun/Moon Group has started. We held our first ritual on August 1st, celebrating Lammas or Lughnasadh

The group has decided that in addition to creating the rituals for the Eight Sabbats, we will be meeting once a month in the style of a small group for community and discussion. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at 2U after Vespers on the First Wednesday of each month. You are invited to join us on September 5, 2012. If you wish to join the Sun/Moon Group, please contact Susan Frances at sfrances@meadville.edu or 773-304-7118.

Pagan traditions and philosophies vary, so here are a few thoughts about the core concepts the Sun/Moon Group has decided to use for its rituals. The Sabbats, or high holy days, celebrate the balanced interlinking between the male principle as symbolized by the Sun, the God, and the female principle as symbolized by the Earth, the Goddess. The Eight Sabbats celebrate life on Earth as it exists in relation to the Sun

Sun moon group 01

, which is realized through the agricultural cycles including humanity's reliance on animals and plants.

The Eight Sabbats as depicted by the symbol of the eight-spoked Wheel of the Year. This symbol represents the life story of the God, as the Sun, consort to the Goddess, as the Earth. Consistent with the Laws of Nature, the Wheel of the Year forms the story of birth, life, death, and rebirth. It is the metaphor for ongoing life.

The Sun/Moon Group invites everyone, whether or not you have experience with a Pagan tradition, to its Sabbat rituals over the church year. The next ritual is the Autumnal Equinox or Mabon, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the church.

Blessed Be.

UUA CMwD News

cmwd logo

From Dori Thexton, Faith Development and Growth Director for the CMwD:

We have an outstanding speaker coming to our district this fall and I hope you and others in your congregations will join us to be energized by Rev. Victoria Weinstein. Victoria is a delightful and engaging presenter and she wants to help us grow our congregations!  She will work with the membership professionals on Friday, November 2 and conduct a daylong workshop open to all on Saturday, November 3, at Countryside UU Church in Palatine, IL.

Here is an excerpt from her most recent blog at www.peacebang.com on the subject of transformation:

"It is not our job simply to grow activists but to minister to activists who are informed in their ethic of service and love by our religious commitments, our religious mission, and our religious principles. It is our job to help all who join with us find a deeper life, a life more abundant, and a way to articulate and live their deepest convictions. It is our job to discover life more abundant in responsible and mature ways, and to mightily resist the temptation to gather life-minded people in a self-congratulatory mode. Because we are a church, we should gather in a spirit of humility, not pride and certainty. Because we are a church, we should broaden our definition of the word "activist" to include all who move beyond the littleness of their opinions, preferences and comforts and into the world as a helper, a healer, an advocate, and an intimate in the human struggle."

Help Wanted: Director of Faith Development

Director of Faith Development
Second Unitarian Church (656 W. Barry, Chicago IL) is seeking a half-time Director of Faith Development (DFD) whose primary area of responsibility will be programming for children and youth, including Sunday morning classes and beyond. We seek a person who is interested in both the overarching vision of the ministry of religious education and faith development within the congregation and also the week-to-week management of classrooms, curricula, and volunteers. Strong communications (interpersonal, written, and technological) and administrative skills are essential in this position, as are a minimum of 2-3 years personal and/or professional experience with education/religious education and demonstrated experience with/commitment to the Unitarian Universalist religious life.

2u stained glass chaliceSecond Unitarian Church is a congregation with a deeply committed faith development volunteer base, a large (and growing) community of young families and children, and a commitment to the growth and health of the program. Our DFD will work closely with the Minister (who is also the position's supervisor) and the Lifespan Faith Development Council in planning curricula, intergenerational worship, and family rites of passage. We see faith development as an integral part of the ministry of the church, and want our DFD to be a partner in that ministry.

This is a salaried half-time position with benefits in line with UUA compensation guidelines. The hours are generally flexible with the exception of Sunday mornings and office hours which will be set in conversation with the Minister.

Queries, cover letters, and resumes can be sent to the
Rev. Adam Robersmith at personnel@secondunitarian.org.
