Welcome Pam Rumancik
pamPam Rumancik is a minister, spiritual director, mother, chaplain, seeker and lover of travel. She was recently granted preliminary fellowship with the UUA and will be ordained in June. She lives in Chicago with her partner, Karen Mooney, youngest daughter, Carrie and two cats. Pam loves conversation around the ways we can bridge our myriad differences through story and metaphor and enjoys a good discussion around those topics which reach the deepest recesses of the heart. She is looking forward to getting to know and work with people at 2U and help ensure a smooth and exciting transition time.
The March - Civil Rights Opera
On Saturday May 19, from 8:00-11:00 pm., there will be a party in the 2U loft, to raise funds to support "The March" Civil Rights Opera Project. I (Rosalind Hurwitz) have been to one of the "mass meetings" staged by the opera company, and can tell you that it's very exciting and the music is gorgeous.  Here is some information about the party and the project:

Let's party our way to a commission!

Join Alan Marshall, the creator and librettist of THE MARCH for an evening of drinking and fun. He has a few surprises in store that may include some cast members singing roles that were not necessarily written for them! There will be a DJ and raffle prizes. Tickets are $30 in advance. $40 at the door.  They may be purchased at: http://www.civilrightsopera.com/cr/may19party/

The summer of 1963 was a pivotal time in America's story-people came together from all walks of life to fight against injustice and rally for freedom and a true democracy.  The 1963 March in Washington for Jobs and Freedom redefined American democracy and transformed our national conscience.  It is time to honor the heroes and martyrs of the civil rights movement from Martin Luther King to Bayard Rustin, President Kennedy and the millions of Americans struggling to overcome racial injustice throughout our nation.  Their epic and personal stories can be served through the power and passion of opera, which channels both the grand sweep of history and the intimacy of human conscience.

THE MARCH Civil Rights Opera Project has been hard at work trying to create the first opera about the civil rights movement. We can
no longer afford to self-fund this project. We believe that our best opportunity to secure a commission is to stage a concert & mass meeting on June 16th during the 2012 Opera America Conference in Philadelphia. We need to raise $$$ to get to Philadelphia and stage this concert & mass meeting.
Guys Book Club
guys book club logoGuys Book Club, a hit Chicago web series (www.guysbookclub.tv) is shooting it's season finale at the Second Unitarian Church on Saturday 5/19.  We invite any of the congregation of Seceond Unitarian Church to come out and joins us as extras.  If you've ever wondered what it was like to hang out on a film set and see the process of movie making, then come out and become a part of the action.  We will have food and beverages for all.  This scene will be family friendly so go ahead and bring the kids (no babies please).  We look forward to working with all of you. Please arrive at the church at 10:00 am on Saturday 5/19 dressed for a service and or wonderful production team will guide you from there. Please be prepared to stay approximate 4 hours.  Looking forward to having you all as a part of our incredible season 2 finale.
June 10 is Music Sunday
americana guitar

Sunday Services on June 10 will be all music.  If you are interested in providing music as part of a small group or as an individual, please contact Marianne Parker by email or in person by Sunday May 20th.  The theme for the all music service is Americana.
Weed Free
weeds
If you're like some of us, you've walked into church recently thinking, "Those weeds have to go!" Here's your chance to help make it happen. Over the next three Sundays (May 20th, May 27th & June 3rd), plan to arrive at church between 9:30 - 9:45 and spend a few minutes pulling weeds. Don't know a hosta from a dandelion? Don't worry, someone will be there to point you in the right direction.

We'll mulch once the weeds are gone. Donated natural color mulch is appreciated and can be dropped off in the back yard. Menards has 5 bags of Natural Wood Mulch for $10 through Sunday, May 20th.
Young Adults Craft and Graduate!
graduateOn Friday, May 25th, Erin and Len will graciously and generously be hosting a Craft Night.  Come one, come all!  Crafting skill is not necessary!  Email erinrusmi@yahoo.com for more info.  And upcoming in June is the second annual Young Adult graduation party, recognizing not just our many YA graduates, but also the other significant life events of the past year, from giving birth to moving to changing jobs to finally being old enough to legally drink.  Email Stephanie at stephanie.geistel@gmail.com for information.

The 2U Young Adult group is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 35.  For general info on the Young Adult group, email youngadults@secondunitarian.org.
Lay Preacher Support Group - May 30
chaliceThe Lay Preacher Support Group has been reformed and is up and running! At our last meeting earlier this month it was exciting to hear peoples' ideas for conducting a lay led service here at 2U. Some of the ideas were fairly well formed others were well, ideas. Everyone who was there was greatly energized and we are now looking forward to see how these ideas are advanced at our next monthly Wednesday night meeting.

Speaking of our next meeting it will be Wed. May 30th at 7PM at the church. Any level of involvement is welcome. On the one hand you may just be intrigued about the idea of participating in a group and perhaps delivering a short homily as part of a "patchwork" service. On the other hand you may be in the process of putting together a fully developed service with a 15 to 20 minute sermon. Whatever the case, at the last meeting we laid the foundation for supporting one another in the task of conducting these lay service here at 2U.

For all those who are participating in the support group, we do ask that they participate in a worship service presenter training session. The next one will be offered on Sunday, June 17th. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, we would appreciate your joining us in the excitement of this endeavor. Please contact Jim Simonis at church or thru email at jsimonis@rcn.com or phone at 773-525-7439.
RSC Lay Preacher Training June 17
chalice logoSave the date!
Rev. Adam and Linda Marquis are planning a training for anyone who would like to present a lay service at 2U. Come explore the possibilities of a patchwork service in which you participate with others or a service you provide. The Religious Services Committee has a support group and worship coordinators to help you as well as an application support person, Janice Stashwick, who can answer questions about applying to preach. So join us in exploring "what is worship?" and share your ideas on what would make for a transforming service. TIme : noon. Date : June 17th Place: 2U For more information contact Rev. Adam or Linda at LKMarquis@mac.com.
Choir Corner

The 2U choir will sing at the June 10 service, then take a break until September.  Due to NATO and Memorial Day, the usual Tuesday evening rehearsal routine varies slightly; check with music director Marianne Parker about the rehearsal schedule.  BUT - new voices are always welcome! Old voices are always welcome!  Join the choir now!  Grab the chance to croon in June!  For more information, email music director Marianne Parker.

August Nicaragua Brigade Needs Brigadistas!
flag of nicaragua
needs at least 5 more volunteers to travel to Nicaragua August 11 - 19 this summer to build houses for the poorest of the poor, and to build community across boundaries and borders.  We need five more in order to meet the minimum of 12 required to form a brigade. More than 5 would be even better. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact one of the 3 group leaders below. You don't have to be a church-member to be a brigadista.
