From the Board Chair

These last few weeks have been exciting and happy times for 2U. On October 30, we held a special congregational meeting to vote on calling the Reverend Adam Robersmith as our settled minister. The vote was overwhelmingly affirmative. After the meeting was adjourned, Adam came to the came to the sanctuary, and the gathering spontaneously and unexpectedly turned into a celebration with singing, cheers, applause, and embracing. I'm so grateful to have had the privilege of being present at that moment. That will be one of the moments I'll always carry to warm me in cold weather.
This celebratory meeting was followed by our Fall Feast on November 5. I don't have the words to describe the joyful spirit that prevailed (especially with my daughter trying to take over the keyboard). I hope there are plenty of pictures. It was a wonderful experience. The fundraising aspect far exceeded our goals, and there's much more celebration to come. One of my favorite parts of the Feast was the sign-up for parties hosted by several of our members, including karaoke parties, movie nights, home-cooked Indian dinners, Scrabble parties, family and children parties, and, of course, it wouldn't be 2U if there weren't parties to discuss social justice and public policy. I always feel a bit awkward expressing thanks to any individual members of the congregation. I'm always afraid that singling out a few for mention is denigrating the contribution of others, and so many have contributed so much. But the contribution of Jeff and Jill Siegel has been so great, not just in planning and executing the feast, but also in so many other ways, that I think I would be remiss not to thank them specifically and effusively. So, Jill and Jeff, thank you so much. We are all grateful for all that you've done for us. The coming year promises to continue our progress in building a warm, thriving community of love and spiritual enrichment. This month, we'll complete the refinance of the mortgage on our building (we're retiring a substantial portion of the debt). Next month, we'll begin work on the kitchen repairs and maintenance. In April, we'll have a service formally celebrating the installation of Adam as 2U's seventh settled minister over the past 100 years. Happy holidays to all. Melissa, Elsbeth, and I are all looking forward to growing with all of you in this season and in the coming years. August |

Roots & Shoots Sunday School Class
The Roots and Shoots UU Explorers and Compass Points groups have been busy planning some fantastic ideas to give back to the community.
You can show your support by asking what they've been up to when you see them at the 2U Bake Sale on December 18th. The UU Explorers will have dog treats for sale, with proceeds going to PAWS. Be sure to ask about the PAWS Party they're planning in February. The Compass Points group will be signing up those interested in taking a cooking class. Learn details at the bake sale. They'll be donating to Heifer International, an organization that provides animals to families so they can provide for themselves.

Wines for Humanity Wine Tasting Party
The Fall Feast may be over, but there is still time to enjoy fellowship with 2Uers. Parties offered "for auction" at the Fall Feast are happening over the next few months. First up: a wine tasting hosted by Dana and Libby Hill tasting that will entertain and educate on the joy of fine wines. A Wine Advisor from Wines for Humanity will inform the group how to taste wine, how to pair wine with food, and how wine can be an integral part of a meaningful life - all while learning about and sampling seven fine wine selections. If you so choose, you can select wines from those sampled. A portion of the proceeds benefits a local charity that works for the prevention of homelessness in families with children. The average bottle price is $20.
Hosts: Libby & Dana Hill Party date: Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7:00 p.m. Location: 2428 N. Drake Ave. in Logan Square Price/spot: $20 (thanks to the generosity of the party hosts, the cost is a donation to 2U)
If you are interested in attending, please email Libby Hill at threebmetaldesign@yahoo.com. You can put a check in the collection plate, but please make note of the fall fundraiser on the memo line so that it gets credited appropriately.

Choir Corner

The 2U choir is a non-audition choir that's open to anyone who likes to sing - basses! tenors! altos! sopranos! All voices are welcome. The choir rehearses around the piano in the sanctuary, every Tuesday evening at 7:30. It's a small but mighty group that would very much like to be a less small but still mighty group. For more information, contact music director Marianne Parker at musicdirector@secondunitarian.org or just show up for a Tuesday rehearsal. Or, if both those options seem too bold and/or you'd like to get the scoop from a choir member - feel free to call me, Myra Epping, at 773-338-4086.

New Members

Al and Sarah Stuart returned to Chicago after twenty years away. Al has his PhD in philosophy from DePaul University and was an adjunct philosophy professor for a number of years. In addition, he was an acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese medicine for twenty years. Now retired, he enjoys poetry. Sarah received her MA from the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration and worked as a clinical social worker for twenty-four years with adults and teenagers. Sarah is enjoying her retirement by painting pastel pictures and playing classical piano. Sarah and Al raised four children and now have three grandchildren. They joined a UU fellowship in Door County, WI in 2003 and also attended a UU church in Santa Fe, NM from 2007 to 2011. Finding these experiences enriching, they sought out a UU church as soon as they returned to Chicago. They feel fortunate to have found 2U and we're glad they did!
Margaret Redlich was born in Chicago, dedicated at 2U, but grew up in Springfield, Il, where she attended the UU Church. She moved back to Chicago to attend UIC where she majored in history. Margaret has held a variety of positions and is pursuing a master's degree in film studies at DePaul University. In her free time, she especially enjoys Indian film. At 2U, Margaret is in a small group, co-facilitator of the Young Adult Group, and on the Religious Services Committee. We are happy to have Margaret return to 2U!
A warm welcome to Al, Sarah, and Margaret!!!
