From the Board of Trustees
board book

With great rejoicing, Second Unitarian will have a special meeting of our congregation this Sunday, October 30, to vote on calling Rev. Adam Robersmith as our full-time settled minister.

The meeting will start at noon.  All members should have received a formal notice of the meeting and materials in the mail in the last week.  (If you didn't receive a notice, this is a good time to call or email the church and make sure we have your correct address).

Adam has been serving as our part-time consulting minister since January, 2010.  Over that time, I've come to admire Adam's mind, love his heart, and appreciate the stable, healing, sensitive guidance he's provided to our community.  I'm glad he wants to make the relationship permanent, and full time.  I'm looking forward to the exciting era we're beginning.

The decision to call a settled minister is a momentous event and a serious commitment, both for the minister and the congregation.  It is a sacred covenant, not to be undertaken lightly.  In the past 100 years, our congregation has had only six settled ministers.  Our search committee has discharged its responsibility of searching for our new minister carefully, thoroughly, and joyfully, and, on behalf of the Board and the congregation, I thank them.  The Board is confident the search committee has made the right recommendation, and the Board unanimously and wholeheartedly endorses the selection.

At the special congregational meeting, first we discuss, and every member has a voice.  Then we decide, and every member has a vote.  Make sure your community hears your voice and records your vote.

I look forward to seeing you all on October 30.

August Staas, Chair

Second Unitarian Church Board of Trustees

Help Make the Fall Feast Happen - We Need You

Just like a great dessert, the Fall Feast & Bake Off needs a number of ingredients to yield a magnificent taste sensation. YOU are a key ingredient! We need help in a variety of areas from set up, to registration, to bartending, and more! Help the young (and young at heart) decorate cookies and bake up their own treasures (Shrinky Dinks!). Click here to sign up to volunteer. You can also email Jill or Jeff Siegel (siegel.jill@gmail.com or jsiegel@hntb.com) or see us after church on Sunday.

We are also looking for a few generous folks who could lend their toaster oven to us for the evening of the event (for making Shrinky Dinks) and could help gather cookie decorating supplies (frosting, sprinkles, etc). If you are able to help with these donations, please contact Jill or Jeff Siegel.

Spotlight Luncheon Canceled -
Home Reception Scheduled!
The Spotlight Luncheon originally scheduled for Sunday, October 30 at 2U is canceled due to the congregational meeting. Instead, Kimberly Bares is hosting a reception at her home for the founders and directors of Mayan Families, 2U's September collection plate sharing recipient. Sharon Smart-Poage and Dwight Poage are visiting from Guatemala, where they operate a nonprofit that provides education, medical, food and shelter to the (mostly) indigenous community around Lake Atitlan. They are fellow UUs! The reception will be on Saturday October 29, from 1-4pm at 2929 W. Gregory Street. Food, libations, good people and lively conversation provided! Children more than welcome. Please RSVP to Kimberly by sending an email to kimberlybares@yahoo.com or calling 773-744-1669.
Lotsa Hosta Thanks!
Thanks everyone who came out on a beautiful October morning, plants in one hand and shovels in the other! It was a pleasure to work with all of you fast and furious planters - two hours of work and over 60 plants in the ground. Thanks to all of you who made the Hosta Divide a success: Libby and Dana Hill, Tom Denio, Laura McKee, Nikki Smith, Colette Wright Adams, Lew Harding, Marva Williams, David Leaman, Molly Rossow, and Aunt Peggy in Iowa.

Sunday November 6, 11:45 - 1:45

If you are interested on participating in this event, please sign up on the "What's Happening" table in the Palmer Room or send an email to membership chair John Broome (broomejv@att.net) so that you have a spot reserved just for you. Childcare is available upon request.

Orientation begins at 11:45 with light refreshments and ends at about 1:45.  Although the focus of the orientation is to provide information about Unitarian-Universalism and 2U history, attending one of these sessions is a requirement for joining the church.

Choir Corner

Enjoy musical fellowship with fellow UU's! Join in the choir!  The choir rehearses in the sanctuary every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.  The choir will next perform at the November 13 service.  For more information, contact 2U music director Marianne Parker at musicdirector@secondunitarian.org - and/or come to a rehearsal. You'll be welcomed with open arms and hearty voices.
Spotlight Luncheon on Economic Injustice and Income Inequality

Sunday, November 13th after the service

How is our economy impacting you? Our communities? Share your story.

What is the nature of income and wealth inequality - how does our tax system foster inequality?

What are the political consequences of growing inequality of wealth and income?

Brainstorm on actions we can take to make our economy fairer.

You can sign up at the What's Happening Table (so we have an idea about how much food to get) but just show up whether you have done so or not.

2U Young Adults Brunch and More!
yam
November 13th at 12 at the Pick Me Up Cafe will be our bi-monthly church Brunch!  Feel free to walk over with the group or meet us there.  Please RSVP so we can decide whether or not we need a reservation (last time was kind of a crunch).  Events in the works include a tai-chi and/or yoga class, Whirlyball, a bookswap/potluck, and a documentary movie night.  Also under consideration, a Thanksgiving Orphans dinner.  If you are interested in attending, hosting, organizing or otherwise being involved with these activities, email Arcenia Harmon at oya7@yahoo.com.
Would You Like to Preach?
Religious Services Committee Can Help

Training
Lay-led services have again become an integral and exciting part of 2U's Sunday gatherings.  If you have an idea about a service and are thinking about leading or being part of a patchwork service, you will be assisted by the Religious Services Committee (RSC).

The first step is to attend a RSC lay-led training.  The next training is scheduled for SUNDAY NOVEMBER  20, 2-4:30 P.M. We will explore the question of "what is worship," share ideas for services, and discuss the process from application to completed sermon. We welcome those who would like to do a service through art, music, or other ways to share your message. We also encourage you to plan a service with other people, which we call a patchwork service. So if you have been curious and are thinking of preaching, come take this first step. You can sign up in the Palmer Room what's happening table or email Linda Marquis at Lkmarquis@me.com or contact Reverend Adam Robersmith at minister@secondunitarian.org. Email or call Linda at 773-857-3035 if you have questions.
November Plate Sharing - UUSC
uusc logo

The November Plate Sharing will be with the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). The UUSC advances human rights and social justice around the world, partnering with those who confront unjust power structures and mobilizing to challenge oppressive policies.

For more information about UUSC please see the website,
the literature made available on the What's Happening Table, or talk to the 2U UUSC Co-Local Representatives Molly Rossow or Paul Konkoly. They will be available after the Sunday services during coffee hour.

Molly and Paul encourage all people who attend the November Sunday services to wear UUSC round support stickers that they will make available.  By wearing the sticker each person indicates their support for UUSC by either being a member of UUSC, having given support for UUSC through direct contributions, or plans to give support to UUSC through the 2U Plate Sharing program.

At a recent lay service Gary Bondurant read Rev. Robert Collyer's (2U's first settled minister) sermon to the congregation. We were reminded that good intentions are good enough. If you have good intentions toward supporting UUSC, please wear the sticker in November.
