Town Hall Meeting - Sunday October 23

This has been a momentous week: the Ministerial Search Committee and the Board of Trustees have both put forward strong votes of confidence in our ministry together and the future that we could create in the long term. They have asked me if I would be willing to be called to the ministry of 2U and I have said that, if the congregation wishes me to, I would be very happy to serve as your settled minister. The Board has now called for a special congregational meeting on October 30th to vote on that possibility. It is extraordinarily important that all 2U members are there if humanly possible so that the will of the congregation can be known without a doubt.

Although we have had nearly two years together already, I don't doubt that there are still questions for the Board, the Ministerial Search Committee, and me about what this might mean for 2U's future and long term ministry. I hope that you will come to the Town Hall meeting at noon on Sunday, October 23rd. This is an opportunity for you to experience something like a part of a candidating week with a minister who would be largely unknown to you - a time to talk with the Board, the Search Committee, and me about your enthusiasms, questions, and concerns.

I am deeply honored that the Search Committee and Board believe that I am the right person to join with you in the ministry of this congregation. I am also deeply excited about the possibility of continuing the work we have done together, expanding upon what we have already created. I hope that you will come speak with us on Oct 23rd and that members will come vote on Oct 30th. I look forward to this  discussion with you!

Oct 19th 1960-1970s 2U History discussion at 7:00pm in the Sanctuary:

On Wed, Oct 19th at 7:00pm, we'll be telling the stories we know of 2U in the 1960s and 1970s - this has the potential to be an amazing conversation, telling us much about our history and the foundations of how we have come to be where we are now. 2U is rich with stories: stories that will help us understand the patterns of strengths and challenges that we must understand to move forward at our best.

No matter whether you are brand new to this congregation or have been around long enough that you think you know everything, I hope that you will come be a part of these conversations. I am particularly excited to hear the stories of this congregation, partially because I love stories. More importantly, though, through these stories we can deepen our understanding of this congregation and what it needs to have a wonderful, healthy, growing future.

Please plan to come for the entire series of conversations, whether as a storyteller or a listener:

Wed, Oct 19th, 7:00pm: 2U in the 1960-70s

Sun, Nov 20th, 12:00pm: 2U in the 1980s

Sun, Dec 18th, 12:00pm: 2U in the 1990s

Sun, Jan 29th, 12:00pm: 2U in the 2000s

Let's use this time to make 2U's future bright together!

Faithfully,

Rev. Adam

Help Make the Fall Feast Happen - We Need You

Just like a great dessert, the Fall Feast & Bake Off needs a number of ingredients to yield a magnificent taste sensation. YOU are a key ingredient! We need help in a variety of areas from set up, to registration, to bartending, and more! Help the young (and young at heart) decorate cookies and bake up their own treasures (Shrinky Dinks!). Click here to sign up to volunteer. You can also email Jill or Jeff Siegel (siegel.jill@gmail.com or jsiegel@hntb.com) or see us after church on Sunday.

We are also looking for a few generous folks who could lend their toaster oven to us for the evening of the event (for making Shrinky Dinks) and could help gather cookie decorating supplies (frosting, sprinkles, etc). If you are able to help with these donations, please contact Jill or Jeff Siegel.

I.P. Andrews Organization, India
October Plate Sharing Recipient
 childrens nutrition

In 2007, Naveen Andrews, MSW, started the Bishop I.P. Andrews Child Welfare & Social Services Organization of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh State, India. The grandson of Sundribai, (friend of the Groetzingers from Peace Corps Service 45 years ago), Naveen is dedicated to the service and social change goals exemplified by his father's work, Bishop I.P. Andrews. But financial sustainability is difficult to create in their impoverished community.

The Andrews Organization is a secular, multi-faceted  nutrition, public health, and training program serving 60-100 families daily and providing educational programs for the larger community, within a budget  of $18,000 per year. Adequate nutrition and afterschool activities lead to improved school attendance and performance; mothers can seek employment while their children enjoy day care, and adolescent girls develop employable skills.  Support comes in part through SHARE, an Indian and US-based organization with 501-c-3 tax-deductible status.

The Andrews Organization is grateful to 2U for embracing our program for your global conscious, expressed through your Plate Sharing generosity. During the month of October, Linda Groetzinger will be available during coffee hour with brochures, slide show, and information on how your donations help, and how you might become become further involved.

Would You Like to Preach?
Religious Services Committee Can Help

Training
Lay-led services have again become an integral and exciting part of 2U's Sunday gatherings.  If you have an idea about a service and are thinking about leading or being part of a patchwork service, you will be assisted by the Religious Services Committee (RSC).

The first step is to attend a RSC lay-led training.  The next training is scheduled for SUNDAY NOVEMBER  20, 2-4:30 P.M. We will explore the question of "what is worship," share ideas for services, and discuss the process from application to completed sermon. We welcome those who would like to do a service through art, music, or other ways to share your message. We also encourage you to plan a service with other people, which we call a patchwork service. So if you have been curious and are thinking of preaching, come take this first step. You can sign up in the Palmer Room what's happening table or email Linda Marquis at Lkmarquis@me.com or contact Reverend Adam Robersmith at minister@secondunitarian.org. Email or call Linda at 773-857-3035 if you have questions.

Applying To Preach
Are you ready to take another step and develop your sermon concept? Once you have a firm proposal in mind, contact Application Support Person Janice Stashwick (janstash22@gmail.com, 312-810-2233), who will send you the appropriate paperwork.   The RSC is happy to help you compose your proposal application.

We ask you to please  submit your application at least three months prior to your proposed service date. Your application will be reviewed by the RSC and you will be assigned a worship coordinator to work with you throughout the process on sermon development, planning music and readings and the Story for All Ages. You will have a detailed timeline to help you, a general script and order of service to help provide the structure.
Choir Corner

Anne Carter grew up in Hanover, N.H. She attended Knox College in IL. where she studied elementary education and student taught at the Walt Disney Magnet School in Chicago. Realizing that she wanted to be more directly involved with the children's lives, she returned to school. Anne is in a dual-masters social work and child law program at Loyola University. In her free time, Anne enjoys running (recently completed a half-marathon) and exploring Chicago. In searching for an organization that reflected her values, Anne found 2U. She has joined a small group and is interested in the youth group.

Roger Wykes was born and raised in Bend, Oregon. He received his BFA from Southern Oregon University. Roger moved to Chicago three years ago to work designing and painting scenery for the theater. In his free time, Roger enjoys volleyball, reading, and walking along the beach. Roger was familiar with UUism from his father and wanted to find a community of his own here in Chicago. He has been attending 2U for a year and a half and recently joined a small group.

Norman Yambao was born and raised in the Phillipines. A registered nurse, Norman works in neuroendovascular interventional radiology at UIC Hospital. In his leisure time, he enjoys exercising and running (he participated in the AIDS run), traveling, going to arcades and movies, and socializing with friends. Norman found 2U through Michael Walver and was pleasantly surprised to find a church that matched his own beliefs. He has been attending 2U since June and is active on the hospitality team.

A warm welcome to Anne, Roger & Norman!!!
