From the Consulting Minister

The work of congregational transition between clergypeople can be challenging, but that hasn't stopped us! 2U has done really important and meaningful work to become the congregation it is today. The past year and a half has been a time to solidify the 2U community, strengthen leadership, and plan for the future. We're continuing that work this year, by taking a necessary detour through 2U's past from the 1960s forward.
In the late 1960s, 2U was on the verge of disappearing entirely, but with the leadership of Lyda Palmer and the persistence of a small group of Unitarian Universalists, 2U was given a second chance. Since then, this congregation has gone through many changes in size, membership, demographics, the neighborhood, and its succession of clergy: four settled ministers, a minister of music, interim ministers, and a consulting minister. 2U is rich with stories - and these stories will help us understand the patterns of strengths and challenges that have made 2U the congregation it is today.
I invite all of you to join me for four opportunities to tell and hear stories about 2U and its rich history. No matter whether you are brand new to this congregation or have been around long enough that you think you know everything, I hope that you will come be a part of these conversations. I am particularly excited to hear the stories of this congregation, partially because I love stories. More importantly, though, through these stories we can deepen our understanding of this congregation and what it needs to have a wonderful, healthy, growing future.
Please put these dates into your calendars:
Wed, Oct 19th, 7:00pm: 2U in the 1960-70s
Sun, Nov 20th, 12:00pm: 2U in the 1980s
Sun, Dec 18th, 12:00pm: 2U in the 1990s
Sun, Jan 29th, 12:00pm: 2U in the 2000s
I hope to see many of you at each of these storytelling sessions, whether as speakers or listeners. Let's use this time to help make 2U's future bright together!
Faithfully,
Rev. Adam

From the Board of Trustees

Our ministerial search continues, and the Ministerial Search Committee continues its exemplary work. The search process is doing what it's supposed to do: helping us to clarify who we are, where we've been, and where we want to go together. Thanks to all who participated in the cottage meetings, board chats, Committee on Ministries chats, and the survey. I'd like to invite all of you to participate in the workshop on October 16: Beyond Categorical Thinking. This is part of the ministerial search recommended by the Unitarian Universalist Association. So far, the UUA's recommended process has been helpful, and I'm looking forward to this workshop continuing in the helpful vein.
Most importantly, make sure you save the date for our fall fundraiser: Saturday, November 5. It's going to be the one party you can't miss this season.
August Staas,
Chair, Second Unitarian Church Board of Trustees

2U Young Adults Host Community Night!

The 2U Young Adults will be hosting community night on Weds, Oct. 5th! All between the ages of 18 and 35 are welcome (more than welcome!) to help plan and prepare. Or, just show up and have fun with the rest of the church community! An October date for the FREE Young Adult Yoga night is being determined. The Oct. 25th Young Adult brunch also led to ideas such as a YA Rocky Horror Night, a YA Documentary Night, and a YA Book Swap. If you are interested in these events, or have great ideas for an event of your own, or just want more information about the group, email Arcenia at oya7@yahoo.com. |

Special Services in October

Sunday October 9 will be an "Ask the Minster" service. Start thinking about what you might like to ask Rev. Adam. This year, the Indian festival of lights called Diwali falls on October 26. On October 23, August Staas will lead our service. This will not be a Diwali service. It will be a Unitarian Universalist service about Diwali. It will include music with the congregation encouraged to sing along.

Beyond Categorical Thinking
Sunday, October 16

"Will the new minister hear me? Will my concerns and needs be met? Will the minister understand what I'm living with? How will the community respond to our minister?"
In answering these questions, a picture of the "ideal minister" (categorized by age, gender, gender identity, nationality, physical ability, race, and sexual orientation) comes to mind. With this picture in place, it can be easy to unintentionally exclude ministers who fall into certain categories. At times, as we get caught up in comparing candidates to our "picture," we can even forget what it is we hoped for in a minister.
On Sunday October 16, 2011, Second Unitarian Church will participate in the Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop offered by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) for congregations involved in the search for a new minister. The 2U Ministerial Search Committee invites all congregational leaders, members, and friends to participate in this workshop.
The Beyond Categorical Thinking program (BCT) is designed to promote inclusive thinking and help prevent unfair discrimination in the search process for a new minister. This program includes a Sunday morning service with BCT workshop facilitators followed by a three hour workshop. In the workshop, the 2U congregation will:
- Consider the hopes, expectations, and concerns they have for a new minister
- Learn more about the ministerial search process, and
- Explore how thinking categorically about people sometimes interferes with choosing the best candidate.
The Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop is another opportunity for everyone in our congregation to be a part of the ministerial selection process. This experience will provide guidance for the Ministerial Search Committee. Lunch and childcare will be provided.

I.P. Andrews Organization, India
October Plate Sharing Recipient

In 2007, Naveen Andrews, MSW, started the Bishop I.P. Andrews Child Welfare & Social Services Organization of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh State, India. The grandson of Sundribai, (friend of the Groetzingers from Peace Corps Service 45 years ago), Naveen is dedicated to the service and social change goals exemplified by his father's work, Bishop I.P. Andrews. But financial sustainability is difficult to create in their impoverished community.
The Andrews Organization is a secular, multi-faceted nutrition, public health, and training program serving 60-100 families daily and providing educational programs for the larger community, within a budget of $18,000 per year. Adequate nutrition and afterschool activities lead to improved school attendance and performance; mothers can seek employment while their children enjoy day care, and adolescent girls develop employable skills. Support comes in part through SHARE, an Indian and US-based organization with 501-c-3 tax-deductible status.
The Andrews Organization is grateful to 2U for embracing our program for your global conscious, expressed through your Plate Sharing generosity. During the month of October, Linda Groetzinger will be available during coffee hour with brochures, slide show, and information on how your donations help, and how you might become become further involved.

Shoe Drive

In addition to September's Fitts Fund collection for Mayan Families, we are also doing a new and used children's shoe drive. Mayan Families is a UU-run nonprofit that provides basic and essential human services to the poor and indigenous people in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, in addition to sponsoring nearly 1500 children to go to school. As your kids transition to school, donate their gently-worn sneakers and sandals to Mayan Families. Look for the box in the Palmer Room. For more information about Mayan Families, go to www.mayanfamilies.org or join us for a Spotlight Luncheon on Sunday, October 30th after services to meet Sharon Smart-Poage and Dwight Poage, the wife/husband team that founded and run the organization! |

Marianne Parker Running Chicago Marathon
On October 9th, my fingers will be taking a break from the piano, and my legs will be getting the workout: I'll be running my second Bank of America Chicago Marathon! Training for and completing a marathon is a rewarding experience in itself - but I am also fortunate enough to be raising money for an organization that is close to my heart along the way, PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving). I have been raising money since I began my training, and am now in my final two weeks of fundraising.
Every dollar that I raise goes to the organization to help provide resources necessary to find homes for thousands of cats and dogs in Chicagoland. After all, PAWS is Chicago's largest no-kill animal shelter.

You may have met the reason I run for PAWS at the Blessing of the Animals service. His name is Bruiser. If you didn't, here is a picture of him doing what he does best, dropping everything in the name of a "treat."
You can also catch a glimpse of me crossing the finish line of my first marathon last year!
Please consider taking a moment to view my personal fundraising site. You can learn more about PAWS, and make a much-appreciated online donation, if you wish. Thank you!

Aspirants for Ministry at 2U
Four members of Second Unitarian Church are in the process of pursuing ordination with the Unitarian Universalist Association. The ordination process requires that people fulfill several educational and training requirements, including the completion of a Master of Divinity degree and two internships. Procedural requirements include a psychological evaluation and interviews with two UUA panels: one with a Regional Sub Committee on Candidacy (RSCC) and then another with a national body called the Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC).
After completing one's initial paperwork with the UUA, one is considered an "aspirant" for ministry. After gaining the approval of an RSCC, one's status changes from aspirant to "candidate." After approval by the MFC, a candidate enters "preliminary fellowship" and becomes recommended for ordination by a local congregation.
Our church now has four aspirants:

Gregory Potts graduated from Chicago Theological Seminary with an M.Div.in 2006. Subsequently, he also earned a Master's Degree in social work and became licensed as a clinical social worker. He works full time as a senior case manager at Chicago House, an agency serving low-income individuals affected by HIV. In addition, he works part-time as a psychotherapist. Greg is planning to practice pastoral counseling and is also looking for other ways to combine his training in ministry and social work. He will meet with the Midwest RSCC in October.

Seth Fisher recently finished his first year of studies at Loyola University Chicago's Institute of Pastoral Studies, where he was awarded a generous scholarship. Seth will begin a field internship at People's Church of Chicago this fall. He is still discerning the specifics of his call to ministry, but said that he is feeling called more and more to work in a parish setting. He will meet with the Midwest RSCC in October.
Susan Frances is currently a part-time student at Meadville Lombard Theological School. Susan is also an attorney and is intentionally taking a slow path through her studies. She said that she has felt a call to ministry since she was a teenager, but was unable to pursue it in the tradition in which she was raised because she is a lesbian. Once she discovered UUism, she realized that she could pursue her dream after all. She is especially interested in serving as a chaplain.

Vishnu Jorge Espinel is currently a full time student at Meadville Lombard. His work and spirituality are strongly influenced by the philosophy and practice of yoga. He is especially interested in the area of knowledge where science, spirituality and healing meet. In coordination with the Gilda's Club Chicago, he facilitates yoga, meditation and spirituality groups for people living with cancer and their families in different hospitals around the city. He expects to continue serving as a community minister. He will meet with the Midwest RSCC in October.
Debra Rostorfer, a Florida native and a recent arrival at Second Unitarian, is a second-year student at Meadville Lombard, who will be meeting with the Midwest RSCC in 2012. She is a member of the UU addictions team and preparing to begin a field placement. Rostorfer feels especially called to a ministry of education about addiction issues. She has been a UU for nine years.

New Members
Rose Broome hails from Fond du Lac, WI. She received her degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and has taught special education for nineteen years in several mid-western states. Rose also enjoyed working part-time for an apartment complex and when a full-time job was offered to her in Chicago, she decided to change course. She is the office manager for a property management company that mainly handles commercial properties. In her leisure time, Rose enjoys reading, music, cooking, visiting with family and friends, and hopes to eventually revive her interest in playing the guitar. Rose's husband, John, a lifelong UU, introduced her to UUism and they attended services in Madison and Champaign. Rose likes the diversity at 2U- members have a wealth of interests- and the friendliness of the congregation makes her feel at home. She has been attending for two years and is active with the hospitality committee and enjoys cooking for special events at 2U.
Jeff Currie grew up in Midland, MI and attended MSU where he received his BA in psychology (and where he met his wife, Christine Shaw, also a psychology major). Jeff works for cars.com providing internet support for car dealers. In his free time, Jeff enjoys brewing his own beer and preparing their new home for the arrival of their first baby, due on March 2, 2012.
Christine Shaw hails from Grand Ledge, MI. She and Jeff moved to Chicago in 2005 so she could attend The Adler School of Professional Psychology. Christine is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology. In her leisure time, she enjoys reading, movies, cooking and running half-marathons. Christine and Jeff found 2U when they were looking for a community involved with social justice issues. They have joined the Young Adult Group and may become involved with Green Sanctuary issues.
Christine Lyons was born on the north side of Chicago and moved to Park Ridge. She attended Illinois State College where she studied to be an English teacher and met her husband, Chad. Christine worked as a high school English teacher in Round Lake and at Josephinum High School in Chicago and also worked in sales. She is a stay-at-home mom to Claire, 8, Nicky, 6, and Thomas, 4. In her free time, Christine enjoys reading and running.
Chad Lyons grew up on a farm outside of Springfield, Il. He studied finance at Illinois State and works in commercial banking-with small business loans for Popular Community Bank. Chad plays the piano and guitar and recently joined a classic rock band called Seven Thirty-Five. At 2U, he hopes to contribute using his skills in either finance or music. Christine and Chad are glad to have found the community at 2U for themselves and for their children.
Welcome to Rose, Jeff, Christine, Chad, Christine, Claire, Nicky, & Thomas!!!!!!!!
