Message From the Treasurer
 Dear 2U Members and Friends,
Thank you so much for your generosity over this fiscal year 2010-2011! To quote UU Minister Rev. Thomas Disrud: "Generosity and most spirituality grow out of a sense of gratitude. We work hard and many of us struggle to overcome obstacles and oppressions. But we have also been given so much. We did not create our talents or our energy. The wonder of the natural world, the capacity to love and to be loved, to know beauty and to treasure friendship, life itself...these are all gifts we did not create."
The Spirit of Life calls us to respond with gratitude. One great theologian said that if our only prayer is "Thank you, thank you, thank you," that would be enough. But that feeling of gratitude for all we have been given also calls us to give back, to find ways to bless the world as we have been blessed.
I hope that you have felt those blessings in your life and I call on you to continue your generosity and complete your pledge for this fiscal year. Currently as a congregation we are at 78% of our fiscal year pledge contributions and we have until July 1 to complete the fiscal year and reach 100%. Please get the rest of your annual contribution into the collection plate as it comes around or send your check to the church or contribute via paypal.
Secondly, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has pledged for the 2011-2012 Fiscal Year. We are projecting a similar budget to this year's for presentation at the annual meeting (AND POT LUCK) this coming Sunday. We would GREATLY appreciate receiving any additional pledges for 2011-2012 fiscal year commitments to the office@secondunitarian.org so that we will have a more complete budget presentation at the annual meeting.
Thanks again for all your contributions to the community in time, talent, and money, er treasure. Without it, we'd have a deficit of spirit as well as the many wonderful services the church provides for the community.
In gratitude for your blessings,
Laura

Summer at 2U

It's hard to believe the 2010-2011 church year is coming to a close, but it's true! Just a couple of short weeks after the May 15th Annual Meeting, we start our Summer schedule, which is a little different from the rest of the year:
June 5: Flower Communion Sunday This Sunday is the transition into our Summer season with a new-member Ingathering and the Unitarian Flower Communion/Celebration. We ask each person coming to church to bring a flower of their choice, whether from their garden, the store, or an arrangement at home. (Just don't pick a flower from someone else's garden on your way! We'll have some extras here, just in case.)
Community Night is on hiatus until the first Wednesday in October, but our church picnic & summer-camp style worship will be on July 17th. Make sure it's on your calendars...we had a blast last year. You don't want to miss it!
Vespers will move to a once per month schedule for the summer, resuming its weekly schedule on Sept 14th. The last weekly vespers service will be June 8th. During July & August, vespers will happen on second Wednesdays at 6:30 before the board meeting.
The Anvil will come out only once a month for June, July & August.
What doesn't change is our Sunday schedule. Worship Services and Children's Classes continue through the summer at 10:30 AM, led by Rev. Robersmith, our lay-leaders, and guest preachers as well.
We look forward to seeing you this summer...
Rev. Adam & Gabrielle

Sarah and her husband are expecting their first child at the end of June. She will be missed! |

Compass Points Youth Group's Survey
 Last month, 2U's Compass Points Youth Group conducted a survey of 2U adults regarding their beliefs about God. Then, on Mother's Day, the class hosted coffee hour and presented the results in a bar graph made of homemade cupcakes! In case you missed it, the most popular statement of belief was, "There are probably as many ideas about God as there are people," followed by what our class calls a pantheist statement, "God and the universe are the same thing - God is in everything and everyone," and what our class calls a humanist statement, "God is present in the relationships among people." See the full results.Congratulations to the Compass Points youth on their project, and thanks to you for enthusiastically supporting them! |

Uganda could pass a law that imposes the death penalty for homosexuality. An international outcry shelved this bill last year -- we urgently need to ramp up the pressure to press President Museveni to stand up for human rights and stop this brutal law. Sign below, and tell everyone:

Orientation to 2nd Unitarian Church
 Second Unitarian Church would like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday June 5, 11:45 - 1:45. This orientation will be facilitated by members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look like. Attending an orientation is one prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, please join us! Snacks will be provided and childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact Membership Committee Chair John Broome, broomejv@att.net. We look forward to seeing you there! |

2U 2nd Annual Plant Exchange
Sunday June 5, 11:30 in the Backyard
Spring is here! If you haven't had a chance to dig in the dirt yet, now is the time. Pot up those plants that have escaped their boundaries and bring them to 2U to exchange with friends. Last year's exchange was a great opportunity to be outside and in good company. I brought home a huge hosta, which is really kicking in this spring (thanks Marva and David)!
In addition to exchanging plants, please help grow our 2U native garden by donating native wildflowers from the plant wish list below. As a fundraising opportunity, I'm hoping to sell a limited number of pagoda dogwood trees, about 20, based on interest. Not only are these 15'-25' native trees shade lovers, they also attract 98 species of birds and will be a great addition to your own native garden. They make great gifts, too. The trees will sell for $30 each - an excellent price for 2'-3' pagodas. Reserve yours now (Libby at threebmetaldesign@yahoo.com, 773-252-7658), as they need to be ordered within a few days to insure healthy shipping. The proceeds will go to the church.
The following plants on the wish list were chosen based on the fact that they are perennials native to the midwest and will thrive in their setting, are able to attract birds and/or butterflies, are shade and sun tolerant, and are easy to maintain. Thanks in advance for any plants you donate, and don't worry about other people bringing the same plant - we need multiples!
Plants for Shade: Aquilegia canadensis (Canada columbine); Baptisia leucantha (Prairie wild indigo); Eupatorium fistulosum (Hollow Joe pye weed); Phlox divaricata (Blue phlox); Phlox maculata (Wild Sweet William); Physostegia virginiana (Obedient plant)
Plants for Sun: Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly weed); Aster novae-angliae
(New England aster); Baptisia australis (False blue indigo); Coreopsis lanceolata (Lanceleaf coreopsis); Echinacea purpurea (Purple coneflower);
Heliopsis helianthoides (False sunflower); Phlox paniculata (Garden phlox);
Rudbeckia fulgida var sullivantii (Showy black-eyed Susan); Solidago rugosa
(Rough-stemmed goldenrod); Solidago sphacelata (Dwarf false goldenrod)
