Our Path Forward

The Board of Trustees wants to spread the joyful news that at our February Board meeting, we voted unanimously to extend our contract with Rev. Robersmith. As we communicated last Fall, the Board was interested in continuing our relationship Adam as a consulting minister for the upcoming church year. In January, we discussed a contract extension with Adam and quickly agreed to a one year contract that will run from July 2011 through June of 2012 (Adam's current contract ends June 30, 2011).
Please join me in celebrating that Adam will be with us for another year!
In addition, I wanted to provide some longer-term context as we are still on the transitional path from our prior settled minister to a future settled minister. There are two key milestones ahead on our path: "what" and "who".
Our first milestone is to define the "what": what kind of church do we want 2U to be? what kind of minister do we need? As you are hopefully aware, COMs is leading a series of feedback sessions over the next month, to help us answer the "what". The congregation will also be surveyed in the coming months to clarify "what" we want. Please do participate in this discussion because the more feedback the congregation provides, the better we will define "what" we want 2U to be.
Our next milestone is selecting the "who": who will be our professional minister in July 2012? We will elect a Search Committee at our Annual Meeting on May 15 (the Nominating Committee is developing a slate of candidates for this committee). That Search Committee will then take on the task of developing a recommendation of "who"
our minister should be. In May 2012, the congregation will vote to decide "who" our minister will be starting in July 2012.
One key issue to remember is that we can continue our relationship with Rev. Robersmith beyond 2012 if.that is the wish of the congregation. We could continue with Rev. Robersmith as our consulting minister or as our settled minister.
I've been thoroughly enjoying our journey down this path together over the past year and I look forward to reaching the milestones ahead over the next year. I hope that you have been enjoying the journey too and that this helps provide an update on where we are headed.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me, another Trustee, or a member of COMs.
With gratitude,
Mark

We encourage you to participate in a group to talk about what is going well in the church and what needs further work and any suggestions you may have. Unless noted, all starting times are 12:00 noon. Sign up at the What's Happening Table in the Palmer Room or contact a COMs member directly. If you would like a one-on-one meeting with any one of us, please call or email us and we will be happy to arrange a time and meeting. Wednesday, March 2 and/or March 9 at 7:00pm with Emily Sharp Sunday, March 6 with Andrea Redfeairn Tuesday, March 8 at 1:00pm with Marilyn Hebda Sunday, March 13 Congregational COMs chat in the Sanctuary after service In addition, COMS is putting together a survey for the congregation in preparation for a Settled Minster Search. Arthur Mitchell grew up in the Chatham area of Chicago. He was a RC seminarian in high school, attended Texas Southern University for a time, and joined the military for fifteen years. There, Arthur worked in aeromedical rescue recovery, radiology, and optometry. He then received his liberal arts degree from Chicago State University and earned a radiology technician license from Wright Jr. College. Soon Arthur will be working on his master's degree in radiology from the University of Indiana NW in Gary, IN. Arthur works as an EMT. He is participating in a social science project researching the effects of the world sex trade industry on and girls and women within and outside the U.S. Arthur has a sixteen year old son, Carlando. In his free time, Arthur enjoys music (beginning to learn how to play the piano) and eventually hopes to join the 2U choir. Arthur was invited to 2U by his cousin, Darrin Weatherspoon. He particularly likes the openness and social justice focus at 2U.

Meet Up: Artists' Panel on Violence Against Women
One of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) four focus areas is Rights In Humanitarian Crisis.Among other things that focus area works toward is "Strengthening women's and girls' ability to protect themselves from violence in wars and crises." UUSC's ongoing Darfur program recognizes that the war in Darfur had particularly targeted women and girls.
The Chicago Cultural Center is hosting an exhibition entitled Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Woman, and Art through April 13, 201, more information available here and and the flier is available on the Whats Happening Table. In it there is a small trinket from Darfur. It is the same size and it is made from the same materials that are used for tourist souvenirs. It shockingly depicts the aftermath of rape. The other exhibits are similarly disturbing, but because the trinket reminded me of the UUSC Darfur program it had a bigger impact.
On March 8, 2011, at 6:00 p.m., the Cultural Center will host an exhibition artists' panel discussion about ways in which their art is used for public expression and social change. Please join me at the Cultural Center for reviewing the exhibition and listening to the panel discussion. We will meet between 5:00 - 5:15 pm at one of the tables within the seating area behind the coffee merchant on the North side entrance. Please look for me - Paul Konkoly (cell phone: 312/350-0163).For those who don't know me, I'll be wearing a small red UUSC badge and my 2U id tag. Please bring a friend or neighbor.

UUA of Uganda's Standing on the Side of Love

What a relief it is knowing that the conference sponsored by Rev. Mark Kiyimba's UU church in Uganda, the only UU church there, went without an immediate response from the security forces. This was the second conference at which Ugandan LGBT activists, at great risk to themselves, openly oppose the Anti-Homosexuality Bill that is still being promoted by homophobic Ugandan legislators. These legislators are encouraged by American evangelical extremists.
Through the attendance of Rev. Eric Cherry, Director of the UUA's International Resources Office, the UUA is representing our commitment to promote human rights and defend our liberal religious values. For more details about the event please see the post by Rev Eric Cherry.
The UUA, in partnership with the UU-UNO (Unitarian Universalist - United Nations Office), has launched the UUA / UU-UNO LGBT Uganda Fund to help the UU Church in Uganda and their partner organizations fight for social justice and equality for LGBT citizens living in Uganda. Please give to the UUA UU-UNO LGBT Uganda Fund.
A card will be sent to Rev Mark and his congregation letting them know we read about their conference and fully support them. Please consider signing the card which will be available on the Whats Happening Table after the March 6th Sunday service.

| Lay-Led Service March 20, 2011 |
The sermon will be an edited version of one given by Robert Collyer, 2U's first minister, and among the most pulpit orators of the late 19th century, with a career in Chicago that stretched from 1860 to 1879. The sermon will celebrate his humanistic spirit, and his insights into the experiences we all have in trying to make real our many hopes, dreams and aspirations.
