From the Minster
Welcome to a New (calendar) Year!
January reminds me of freshly laundered linens - something clean and fresh and clear after the holidays. The decorations are put away at home and out in the world, the music returns to whatever is normal in the shops. Although I love the lights and greens, I am also happy to see them disappear for another year. It feels to me like there's space in the world once again when the holiday season has ended. In the life of the church, January doesn't signify big changes or a new cycle. Instead, it's our return to life as usual, with the wisdom of the holidays still reverberating in our minds. I hope we will be a little more joyful, a little more generous, a little more courageous and hopeful. We have the ability to bring the best of the season forward, leaving the excesses behind.
I'm ready for this change, this year. To take full advantage of it and be restored for the springtime, I'll be preaching this Sunday and then taking two weeks vacation from Jan 6th through Jan 19th. During that time, I am looking forward to putting away the old year and the holiday season and finding some of the space and rejuvenation that comes with January. I hope that you, too, will be able to find the freshness in the New Year!
Faithfully,
Adam

Orientation to 2nd Unitarian Church
Second Unitarian Church would like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday, January 2, 11:45 - 1:45. This orientation will be facilitated by members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look like. Attending an orientation is one prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, please join us! Snacks will be provided and childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact Membership Committee Chair John Broome (uuajohn@live.com). We look forward to seeing you there! |

Staying in the Blessed Community
Sunday January 16, Lay-led service by Sue Dunmore
Participating in a mostly-volunteer community is tough. Someone forgot to make coffee, the furniture has been re-arranged, who painted the walls violet!?! Oh, and NO ONE remembered to thank me for the 40 hours I spent sorting and recycling! Why do I get up early every Sunday, why do I drive through rush-hour traffic on Wednesday evening, why do I bother!
Sue Dunmore reflects on the frustrations, joys, and spiritual growth that results from coming to Second Unitarian church, participating, and staying "at the table" in the face of crises both small and big. Ours is a "blessed community," one which offers a challenging and supportive environment for connecting to ourselves, others, and our world. Join in forming our church. The admission price is very inexpensive and very demanding - just show up! |

No Tomorrow Screening
Sunday January 16, 12:30 - 3:30pm in Fleishman Hall
a new PBS documentary (the production company is looking for feedback from these pre-release viewings) about the death penalty issues - Please attend this 2U Social Justice Council Spotlight Luncheon event on January 16, 2010, from 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm in Fleishman Hall. For a complimentary brown bag lunch please RSVP to Paul Konkoly (312/350-0163 or e-mail at pkonkoly@yahoo.com) and specify your sandwich (turkey, ham, or vegetarian) and drink (cola, non-cola, bottled water, or seltzer).
When a young woman, featured in a recent documentary (Aging Out) about teenagers leaving foster care, is found dead the film itself becomes central to whether her killer lives or dies. The unique film-within-a-film perspective of No Tomorrow takes us inside a suspenseful death penalty trial and challenges us to think in new ways about the death penalty, our criminal justice system, and the vulnerable young people in all of our communities.
The No Tomorrow viewers guide is an excellent resource for background information, additional reading, and links related to the death penalty debate. You may want to look at the guide even if you are not planning to attend the screening and are interested in the death penalty issues.
After the screening of No Tomorrow we will discuss some of the following questions and discussion points taken from the viewers guide:
- Describe your views on capital punishment before seeing No Tomorrow.
- Before seeing the film, what do you think formed the basis for your views on the American criminal justice system?
- Did your views change as a result of seeing the film?
- Can you say what it was in the film that changed or confirmed your view?
- What did you learn from the film that most surprised you?
- What part of the film did you find most interesting?
