Unitarian Universalist Association
From the Minister

As many of you no doubt have heard in the news over the past few days, packages containing explosives were sent through UPS to two Chicago-area Jewish congregations. Recent news reports suggest that the packages were likely meant to explode in flight, rather than at their destinations. Fortunately, those packages were intercepted in Dubai and England.

We have no confirmed information about which congregations or organizations were the possible targets at this time. Congregation Or Chadash, which rented space from Second Unitarian for many years (until about 7 years ago), has identified itself in the media as one of the targeted congregations. I've sent a note to Rabbi Edwards of Or Chadash offering support, and have received a note of appreciation from him.

Although I was occupied with worship, I have been told that there were a number of conversations on Sunday about how our congregation's historic connection to Or Chadash may or may not have anything to do with the threats to the synagogues. Again, there is no confirmed information that's been put out by law enforcement about the synagogues that were targeted. Given our past connection to Or Chadash, I've contacted law enforcement to make sure that there is no cause for alarm at this time; they have assured me that they see no imminent threat to our congregation and that we would be contacted immediately if they had a concern.

We already are a security-minded congregation: We use our alarm system (I've even set it off once!) and we pay attention to who is in and around our building. In the interest of wisdom, staff will be implementing a suggestion from law enforcement to all religious communities that we accept only packages that are expected or from trusted sources. Others will be refused, turned over to law enforcement, or confirmed as legitimate before opening.

Harm intended for any faith community is harm intended for all faith communities. Whether the burning of churches, vandalism and threats against mosques, or attacks aimed at synagogues and temples, these forms of violence are intended to damage the freedom of people to practice their religion in safety and peace. As Unitarian Universalists, our covenants call us to affirm and promote

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

Therefore, we remain in solidarity with our broader faith community, resisting violence and seeking peace and justice. Our theology is based in our covenants that value a breadth of religious understanding, making interfaith cooperation and support one of the ways in which Unitarian Universalists live out our values in the world. We are each blessed with the divine gifts of compassion and action. Let us offer our prayers and our support to the Jewish community in Chicago at this time and continue also to work towards a world that is filled with peace, with safety, with freedom, with justice, with love.

If you have questions, please contact Rev. Adam Robersmith at minister@secondunitarian.org or (773) 549-0260 ext. 13.

From the Board of Trustees
chalice
Now that we are few months into the church year, the Board of Trustees wanted to provide an update on some of the work that we will be doing as a congregation to continue our transition from our prior settled minister to a future settled minister.

To give you a sense for the longer-term transition timing, the current plan is to have a settled minister in place for July of 2012. To meet that goal, we will need to elect a Settled Minister Search Committee on August 1, 2011. Between now and August 1, 2011, together, we will be crafting our shared vision for the future of 2U. This transition work takes time and this schedule will give us the time we need. As a result, we will not be forming a Settled Minister Search Committee this church year.

Over the coming months we will be working together to acknowledge our past and renew our shared vision for the future of 2U. The Town Hall meetings early this year were a good first step in this process. The Committee on Ministries, the Board, and Adam will all be working together to plan for and help lead these transition efforts.

Your input and guidance will be critically important in crafting our shared vision for the future of 2U. As a next step, on Nov 14, the Committee on Ministries will be leading a more detailed discussion about the work ahead and soliciting input about how we can make this transition as successful as possible.

I am so enthused by the energy and committment that 2Uers demonstrate each week. By drawing on all of our combined energies and input, I know that we will create a shared vision for the future of 2U that inspires each one of us.

One last thought, as you may be curious, our current contract with Adam runs through June of 2011 and although no formal decisions have been made, the Board of Trustees is interested in discussing an extension with Adam through June 2012. In the future, we can also certainly consider extending our contract with Adam beyond 2012.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me, another Trustee, or a member of COMs.

With gratitude,
Mark Sneathen
Chair of your Board of Trustees

A  Big Fall Feast "Thank You"

feast treeWhat an evening! Now that Fall Feast has come and gone, we're happy to report that the event was a great success. While the numbers won't be final for a few weeks, everyone's generosity before, during, and after the event was truly amazing.

But what was even more incredible was the sense of community that the party produced. Yes, Fall Feast is a fundraiser, but more importantly, it's a community raiser-an event to help us re-connect and re-charge ourselves and our relationships as we move into the cooler months and prepare for some of the tough work ahead.

Most of all, it was a time for us to come together-as guests and volunteers. After the delicious food and tasty desserts, after the raffle and auctions, after all of the laughter, everyone came together at the end of the evening and prepared the Palmer Room and Sanctuary for Sunday service. The fact that this was done in less than 45 minutes was nothing short of miraculous. It was really a testament of who we are-as a congregation and a community.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the planning, the execution, and the cleanup of the event-in our opinion, the best part of Fall Feast was working with all of you. There are so many people we would like to thank individually, but we want to offer a special thank you to Allen and Barb Hailey, who were responsible for the awesome auctions.

Again, thank you all. We hope to see you at next year's Fall Feast!

Orientation to 2nd Unitarian Church
Second Unitarian Church would like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday, November 7, 11:45 - 1:45 p.m.!! This orientation will be facilitated by members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look like. Attending an orientation is one prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, please join us!

Snacks will be provided and childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact Membership Committee Chair John Broome (uuajohn@live.com). We look forward to seeing you there!
Social Justice News
2U SJC Co-sponsors Death Penalty Speaker Stop - "Beyond Repair", the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (ICADP) speaker stop will be hosted by St. Clement Church. The 2U Social Justice Council (2U SJC) is co-sponsoring this event. Personal stories of Illinois' flawed death penalty will be presented. Come hear stories of redemption, forgiveness, and betrayal from people who have been personally touched by our state's death penalty system.

Cathy Crino
, whose sister Stephanie was murdered in 1995, will share her family's experience with the system after the death of their loved one. You'll hear Nathson Fields who was exonerated of a double homicide for which he spent eleven and a half years on death row. The judge in his original trial had been bribed.

The event comes just before our stare legislature votes on whether to abolish the death penalty in Illinois.

Please attend on Wednesday, November 3 at 7 p.m. at St. Clement School, 2524 N. Orchard St.

For more information, contact 2U SJC member Paul Konkoly (pkonkoly@yahoo.com).
Thank You, 2U Gardeners!
We had a great turnout October 16th, with fourteen people joining in to weed, mulch and trim trees! The weather couldn't have been better, as was the company. Everyone worked tirelessly and we had the front yard looking great in under three hours! Thanks to everyone who came out to help - your hard work is appreciated!

Planning is underway for spring planting in the garden. Please contact Libby at threebmetaldesign@yahoo.com if you are interested in designing (or can recommend a landscape designer), gathering plants and/or planting.

What's a UU?
I preached on this question. The following is my personal definition of Unitarian Universalism.

In the Spirit of Life, we're ONE human family.

We love. We grow. We serve.

We seek to love all, bar none.

We become good to do good.

We make the world a better place for everyone.

So what's your personal faith statement? How do you define yourself as a Unitarian Universalist?

I invite you to work on your own statements. Discuss them with your church friends, and small group ministries. If you want to share them with the congregation, send them to me. I will collect them for an article in the next Anvil.

Good luck, and bright blessings.

Sincerely,

Rev. Rudra
