Get Involved at Fall Feast!
 Saturday, October 23, 6:30 p.m.
So...you've purchased your tickets and you're ready for the big party. But there's something you can do to make Fall Feast even more fun-get involved! Here are a couple ways you can do just that: By helping to "harvest" auction items-We have some great live and silent auction items for Fall Feast, but we need your help to harvest more items to auction off. Please consider donating a service or talent (photography, artwork, babysitting, for example) or make a request to a restaurant you frequent often. We're an artistic group at 2U, so maybe you have connections to a local theater that would donate tickets. All of these are popular items that encourage competitive bidding.
Download and complete our Auction Donation Form and bring it to service with you next week. If you have questions or a donation you'd like to discuss, please contact Barb Hailey at heybk1130@yahoo.com or (773) 942-6310. By volunteering for the event-Half the fun at Fall Feast is going to be connecting with and re-connecting with members of the community. Are you a kitchen maven? Want to bartend? Perhaps you're into setting things up. Whatever you choose, by volunteering to help out, you'll get a chance to meet new people and have fun doing it. Check out available time slots and see how you'd like to volunteer. Once you've picked a spot or two where you'd like to volunteer, contact Dave Maly at demaly@gmail.com and ask him to add you to the list.
Are you new to 2U? Getting involved at Fall Feast is a great way to get your feet wet and get to know the community.
Questions? Contact Dave Maly at demaly@gmail.com or (773) 510-2100.

Needed - Helping Hands & TLC to Renew 2U's Curb Appeal.
Saturday, Oct. 16th, 9am to 12pm (with enough hands)
Donate your time and energy to give the Second Unitarian front yard a much needed face lift! We'll pull weeds and put down mulch to get it looking it's best over the fall and winter months. Gloves, rakes, spades and bags will be available, but please bring your own gloves and yard tools if you have them. RSVP to Libby Harvey-Hill so I'll know how much food and hot cider we'll need to keep everyone happy. Let me know if kids are coming and we'll throw in some fun seasonal activities for them. Reach me at threebmetaldesign@yahoo.com, or call 773-252-7658. |

Calling all 2U Shutterbugs
Help Promote 2U and Document our Continuing Story
Are you the one always snapping pictures at 2U worship and events? We're planning to launch an ever-updating slideshow of recent 2U photos on the front of the 2U site, and we'd love your ongoing contributions. Even if we don't use your photo on the site, it will become part of 2U's ongoing historical archive, helping us document who we are in this latest time of great change and transitions.
A few ground rules, if you're interested in having your photo included on the Web site:
1. Identify the people you photograph and get permission from them that it's ok to put this on the 2U site. For groups, at least identify the group leader and check with them if anyone objects to their picture being used on the site.
2. Any identifiable pictures of kids under age 18 will require parent permission to go on the Web site.
3. For now, email all photos and accompanying information/permissions to programs@secondunitarian.org for consideration.

2U Movie Night (or, "Movies With Meaning")
Returns for October: "Oh, God!" (1977)
"The last miracle I did was the 1969 Mets. Before that, I think you have to go back to the Red Sea."
Before there was Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman, there was John Denver and George Burns. A grocery store manager is contacted by the Almighty and given the task of returning the world to sanity. Join the 2U Young Adults (even if you're more of a George Burns type...) for an evening of pie, popcorn, and discussion of Carl Reiner's take on the Ultimate -- 7 p.m. October 15th, 6459 N. Newgard, 3D. For further info call Margaret Redlich at 217-341-6106 or email at mredlich21@gmail.com. |

Orientation to 2nd Unitarian Church
Second Unitarian Church would like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday, November 7, 11:45 - 1:45 p.m.!! This orientation will be facilitated by members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look like. Attending an orientation is one prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, please join us! Snacks will be provided and childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact Membership Committee Chair John Broome (uuajohn@live.com). We look forward to seeing you there! |

From the Committee on Ministries (COMs)
Have a question? Want to share your feedback? Overjoyed or Concerned about something at 2U?
COMs is here to help facilitate the conversation between the parts of our community! COMs, your Committee on Ministries, is a group of 2U members who act as liaisons among the minister, the Board, and the congregation. If our minister is the lead thinker of the church and our Trustees are the muscles, we're the emotional heart. Think of us as your ombudspeople-members to go to if you have questions or concerns, or just want to share your thoughts.
This is the first of a series of four articles to introduce COMs, and to stimulate our internal dialog on where we've been and where our congregation is going.
Who are we?
- Andrea Redfeairn, Chair Andrea became a member of 2U in 1995, meeting and marrying Gregory at 2U in 1996. She has been involved in membership, hospitality, new member orientations, and teaching religious education. She has been a member of COMs for 4 years. During the day she teaches high school for Chicago Public Schools.
- John Houck and his wife Rhonda attended 2U for a number of years, then joined and have participated in a variety of roles, most involving food. John (with many other hands) designed/planted the perennials beds in front. Oskar came to make us a family in 2006, so we've been more active in the Religious Ed arena lately.
- Marilyn Hebda and her California wife Linda Marquis have attended 2U for four years, becoming members in the first year. They've enjoyed hosting coffee hour and promoting GLBTQ events at church. Marilyn retired from teaching & counseling high school and helps train folks for lay-led services.
- Dave Maly and his wife Alyssa Joy Stowe arrived at 2U in 2004. During the past several years, Dave has participated on several committees, and is currently privileged to serve on COMs and is co-chairing the annual 2U fundraiser, Fall Feast on 23 October.
- Emily Sharp and her husband Jason Lamb joined 2U last spring after attending services for the previous year. Emily has participated in three small group cycles and greets churchgoers with the Hospitality Committee. She shared her Peace Corps experience when she helped lead a church service about world community this summer, and she and Jason have hosted post-church coffee hours.
What do we do? We meet monthly with the minister to discuss church business and address any concerns raised by the congregation. It's our job to take the pulse of our community, responding to joys, needs, questions, and concerns-both positive and negative. Our meetings are confidential: COMs business is not discussed outside of COMs meetings. COMs is a bit different since the members are appointed by the Trustees, per our charter which can be found at: http://www.secondunitarian.org/COMCharter(adopted051210).pdf
What if I have a problem? If you're concerned about something at 2U, first try to speak with the person(s) responsible to resolve the issue, then COMs is the next place to turn. Consider meeting with one or all of us, with or without the minister. If you don't feel comfortable meeting face-to-face, consider e-mailing, sending a letter, or arranging a phone call with a COMs member. Just make sure to tell us who you are and how we can contact you. We politely decline anonymous complaints-we will want to follow up with you to make sure your issue is resolved in the best way possible. Transparency and accountability are very important to us.
So what should I do? We welcome your feedback, especially during this important transitional time in the life of our church. Help us make the 2U community stronger, more vibrant, and more active than ever. Let us know how things are going! Especially the things you like; and vitally, the things you don't like so much.
Please note that the Trustees have generously agreed to yield their chat time Sunday 14 November to COMs. Join us in the sanctuary from 12-1:30 PM - especially if you are active in committee/Council activities for an informal discussion.

New Members
Heather Easley-Harries grew up in Wayne, Il, a small town in southern Illinois. She attended DePaul University, graduating with a degree in psychology. While at DePaul, Heather met her husband, Tyler Harries, who was studying computer science. After a trip to Europe and working for awhile, they moved to Champaign-Urbana, University of Illinois, for graduate school. Heather earned her master's degree in social work and Tyler in architecture. She works part-time at Weiss Hospital and Tyler works for an architecture and design firm based in Champaign - he is able to split his time between home and Champaign. Heather and Tyler have three boys-Jack, 4 and 1/2, Oliver, almost 3, and Augustus, 7 months. Heather is the social events coordinator for the parent group Friends of Mayer at Oscar Mayer School, where Jack attends pre-school. Both Heather and Tyler love to read and enjoy traveling. Heather found 2U on the internet after taking the belief.net quiz which indicated she was UU! Heather and Tyler are glad to have found a church home for their family. Carolyn (Carrie) Binder hails from Minneapolis. She came to Chicago in 2007 to attend Loyola University where she is studying psychology. Carrie took a year off to teach English to middle schoolers on Reunion Island, Department of France, off the coast of Madagascar. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, traveling, and surfing. She found 2U online after hearing about UUism from some friends while she was in high school. At 2U she hopes to eventually join a small group. Rebecca (Becca) Friesen grew up in Newton, Kansas. She attended Goshen College in Indiana, where she earned a degree in physics. Becca works as a lab technician in neuroscience at Northwestern University and plans on taking more science classes soon. She enjoys biking to work and playing Frisbee. Becca became interested in UUism after having a UU mentor and realized she lived close to 2U. She may be interested in joining a small group at 2U. Mark Lickerman grew up in South Shore. He originally joined 2U in 1972, but left in 1987 to help found the North River Unitarian Fellowship (which disbanded in 1991). He has rejoined now after a time away. Mark's main interest is in social justice (helped with the Abner Mikva campaign for Congress in 1959, attended the first Midwestern Arab Student Convention also in 1959, and was an interpreter for the Pan-American Games in Chicago). In addition he tutors twice a week in an ESL program at the Southeast Asian Center and is interested in inter-religious activities. Mark loves music and his two cats, "Jimmy" and "Grey". He describes himself as a "people person" and as a Jewish-Unitarian-Pagan, or "JUP". We're glad Mark has found his way back to 2U.
Darrin Weatherspoon grew up in the southeast part of Chicago. He attended DeVry Insititute and graduated with a BS in computer information systems. He has a background in program management and is looking for a new IT position. Darrin is also involved with Dove Productions, a family-owned promotion company. He is a single parent to three young men-his son Cortez, 17, has a 22 year old nephew Marcus, and also cares for his foster son, Mario. Darrin enjoys caring for his home, music, hanging out with friends, and is a member of a social club. Darrin attended 2U several years ago and now feels he resonates with 2U even more. As a gay man, he is particularly interested in mentoring youth and helping them "find their way". At 2U, he would be interested in helping out with parenting and/or gay initiatives. Gail Gallagher grew up in Waterloo, IA, where she attended the Unitarian Church. She graduated from the University of Nebraska, with a degree in acting and theatre management. Gail moved to Chicago a month ago to accept a paid internship at the Still Point Theatre Collective. She works with incarcerated women at the Lake County Jail and with developmentally disabled adults at Esperanza Center. Gail will be in a three-person play called "Strong Women," adapted from the writings of women incarcerated at Cook County Jail. In addition, she is on the local planning committee of the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed Conference to be held in the spring in Chicago. In her free time, Gail enjoys attending plays, reading, exploring Chicago, and is developing her skills as a composer. She found 2U after receiving recommendations from her pastors in Waterloo and Lincoln. Gail has already joined the choir at 2U. Laura Blais grew up in Tulsa, OK where she attended the Unitarian Church. She originally moved to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago where she earned a degree in international studies. Laura attended law school at the University of Oklahoma and returned to Chicago in May after graduation. She awaits the results of her bar exam and is looking for work---being especially interested in international and human rights law. In her free time, Laura enjoys watching college football (especially is an Oklahoma fan- a Boomer Sooner!), reading, music, baking, and is an occasional knitter. At 2U, she has already joined the choir and is interested in joining a small group and the Young Adult Group. Welcome to Heather, Tyler, Jack, Oliver, Augustus, Carrie, Becca, Mark, Darrin, Cortez, Marcus, Mario, Gail and Laura !!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
