From the Minister
Wherever I have lived, I have always sought out someplace
from which I can see the horizon. Whether the view across the plains here in
Illinois or a hilltop in New York, the crest of a highway in Phoenix or the top
of a tower in Ireland, the ability to see out a good distance has always been
important to me. I think it's something to do with being born and raised
a flatlander, watching thunderstorms roll in for hours from miles and miles
away. I think it's also something to do with wanting to know what is
coming up next, what is out there waiting for me to meet it. It's a little something like the start of a new church
year as far as I'm concerned. Looking out over the promise and potential
of what we can achieve together is very exciting to me! We already have met a
few of those things waiting for us on the road forward. We are bringing our
children into worship with us each Sunday, offering a weekly Wednesday evening
Vespers worship service from 6:30 - 7:00 PM, restarting Community Night,
and welcoming Marianne Parker into 2U's staff as our new Music Director. A little further along our path are other opportunities and
challenges. We're going to be working together to take on the tasks of
interim ministry to prepare 2U for the future: examining the systems and infrastructure
of the institution of 2U, seeking to make things work in healthy and efficient
ways; discussing where 2U has been, where it is now, and creating a vision of
where it wants to be in years to come; strengthening the lay-leadership and
participation in the governance and life of the congregation, whether in our
sanctuary or in our connections to the wider world. I hope that you all will find a spot from which you can see
the horizon and then share that vision with the rest of us. In committee
meetings, Board Chats, and conversations with the Committee on Ministries
(among others), we will have many times during which we can determine the route
forward together. The challenges and opportunities we face can help us to do
wonderful things. I look forward to the journey! Faithfully, the Rev. Adam Robersmith Consulting Minister

Fall Feast 2010
On Saturday evening,
October 23, join other members of the 2U community for a memorable night of
music, food, and dancing at Fall Feast 2010. Play a game, win something fabulous in the silent or live
auctions, and buy a few raffle tickets to support 2U! Sponsorship
opportunities are available to 2U members at 50% off. What a deal! This is
a great opportunity to plug your business while supporting a cause you believe
in. Individuals/families/businesses will receive recognition in the program
booklet and at the event. Want to help? We need
you! If you're interested in volunteering on the event or would like to
become a sponsor, contact Dave Maly at demaly@gmail.comor 773.510.2100.

An Opportunity to Help
A member of our 2U community is in the process of setting
life up all over again and is in a gap between jobs and housing situations.
While the kindness of friends and family has sustained them for a little while,
they are in need of a little more help while waiting for a new job to start. If
you have space and the ability to consider offering a space for someone (even
for just a little while) as they get back on their feet (or know of a helpful
possibility) please contact Rev. Adam Robersmith at 630-414-5340 or at minister@secondunitarian.org.

Volunteers Needed!
Are you interested in spending time with the youngest members of our community? The church is in need of people to volunteer in our infant & toddler nursery, aka the Green Caterpillar Room. The commitment is one Sunday a month during service. To get involved, contact Gabrielle Parra, Director of Programs at programs@secondunitarian.org.

Orientation to 2nd Unitarian Church
Second
Unitarian Church would
like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be
holding on Sunday, October 3, 11:45 - 1:45 p.m.!! This orientation will be
facilitated by
members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to
share
information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of
UUists, 2U's
own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look
like. Attending an orientation is one
prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a
regular visitor who is ready to commit to
membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more
about
Unitarian Universalism, please join us! Snacks will be provided and
childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the
big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact Membership
Committee Chair John Broome (uuajohn@live.com). We look forward to seeing you there!
