From the Minister
 Come
the start of the new church year, there will be a few changes in
our worship life. You'll notice new
words of welcome, a Story for All Ages in the service, the contributions of a
new music director. There
will be a new mid-week worship opportunity with a Vespers service and
meditation from 6:30 to 7:00 PM on Wednesdays, beginning on September 15. This will be a time for singing, readings,
and silence. These will layer with all that remains consistent as part of our
worship life: services that meet our varying spiritual, intellectual, and
emotional needs, continued lay-led services and members of the congregation as
part of the weekly worship team, the words of our covenant and the rituals that
bring us comfort and support.

Planning a Worship Service Workshop
Everyone has stories to
tell, insights to share, a vision they want to achieve, or questions they
struggle with. A Sunday Worship Service is an opportunity to serve the church
by contributing your unique outlook on the world we share. If you've ever felt
you had a spiritual message to impart, sign up for this class in Planning a
Worship Service. During this 4 hour
session we will cover:
- What is Worship?
-
What is "Good"
Worship?
-
What are appropriate
Worship topics?
-
How do you actually plan
a Worship Service (nuts and bolts)?
-
What are the next steps
to conducting my service at 2U?
Please join us Saturday,
September 11 from 2:00 - 6:00 at Second Unitarian Church for the "Planning
a Worship Service" class. Sign-up in the Palmer Room or email Sue Dunmore
at jonsuedun@comcast.net.

Orientation to 2nd Unitarian Church
Second
Unitarian Church would
like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be
holding on Sunday, September 12, 11:45 - 1:45 p.m.!! This orientation will be
facilitated by
members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to
share
information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of
UUists, 2U's
own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look
like. Attending an orientation is one
prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a
regular visitor who is ready to commit to
membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more
about
Unitarian Universalism, please join us! Snacks will be provided and
childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the
big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact Membership
Committee Chair John Broome (uuajohn@live.com). We look forward to seeing you there!

Membership Committee News
Sunday, Sept. 19 is the involvement fair after service. Look around the Palmer Room for the tables set up for various church
committees and activities. Explore and
learn. Then sign up for the committee or
activity that interests you most. Part of the benefit of belonging to
the 2U spiritual community is being able to work together and support one
another. Small group ministry provides
one way for us to do that. Committees
provide another avenue for that fellowship and service. The involvement fair is being
revived after a time away, and we hope that it will give you one more way to
explore and participate in the community. "For the
common good" bulletin board. Sometime during September, the membership committee will be mounting a
new bulletin board in the Palmer Room for all to use for classified advertising
and general notices. There is a
two-month limit for items on the bulletin board, except for business
cards---which may be kept up as long as desired. We hope this will serve those members who
otherwise might be tempted to use the directory for e-mailing all members to
accomplish the same goal.
For more information about either of these events or the Membership Committee, please contact chair, John Broome, uuajohn@live.com.

Volunteer of the Month
Curtis Smith has volunteered in just about every capacity possible at 2U this year. Curtis has chaired 2U's Social Justice council for two years. He also joined the Interim Board of Trustees at the beginning of 2010 as Council chair. He continues to serve on the Board as a trustee for the 2010-2011 church year.
Curtis also organized our Spring Clean-Up day this year and works with the Buildings & Grounds committee.
While attending to these many matter at church, this year Curtis also started law school and got married!
Please give Curtis a warm, heart-felt thank you when next you see him in church for all the hard work he has done to nurture our community.

New Members
Anna Rantala grew up in northern Wisconsin.
She attended Northwestern University
and then transferred to the University
of Wisconsin graduating with a
degree in urban planning. Anna worked for the department on urban planning in Chicago
and became an expert early on with computers and information systems. She
worked for the Hospital Planning Council of Metropolitan Chicago, Cook
County Hospital,
and later, for the Howard Brown Clinic. Anna is now fully retired. She enjoys
writing, reading and is taking a watercolor class. Anna has two grown daughters
who live in Wilmette. She originally attended the Near
North UU Fellowship which merged with 2U in the 60s, which she then
attended until the mid-80s. She is pleased to
return to the 2U community and may join a small group or a seniors'
group. Evan Hammontree hails from Traverse
City, MI. He attended Alma
College where he studied psychology
and then received his master's degree in education from the University
of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
Evan taught sixth grade on a Navajo Reservation in Chinle, AR
for the past two years. He and his wife, Jillian MacDonald, returned to the Midwest
this summer and he hopes to find a position here as an elementary school
teacher. In his free time, Evan enjoys hiking, biking, and camping. He is glad
he and Jillian have found a UU community here in Chicago (and discovered that
his grandmother helped to found the UU Church in Traverse City). Evan may
become involved in social justice activities at 2U. Jillian MacDonald grew up in Midland,
MI and met Evan at Alma
College. She received her bachelor's
degree in exercise and health science there and then her doctorate in physical
therapy at Washington University
in St. Louis. She joined Evan in AR
and worked as a PT for the Indian Health Service. Returning to the Midwest,
Jillian specializes in the neurology field at the Rehabilitation Institute. In
her free time, she enjoys traveling and outdoor activities. At 2U she is interested
in possibly joining a small group, the Young Adult Group, or working on social
justice activities. We are glad Evan and Jillian found 2U. Welcome to Anna, Evan, and Jillian !!!

The Rev. Wayne Walder at the Neighbourhood UU Congregation in Toronto needs our help. His 22

difficulty finding a place to rent for such a short time.
We are reaching out to our fellow UU congregations to find a place for him to stay. If you can help, or know someone who can, please contact the Rev. Wayne Walder, revwayne@live.ca.
