FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Mark Sneathen
mark
I feel very humbled and excited as I assume my new role as the chair of your Board of Trustees for the coming year. It was a profoundly rewarding experience serving with our last Board over the past 6 months. Working closely with all of the members of our last Board and observing their compassion and commitment was a constant reminder of the depth of community that 2U provides. I feel tremendous gratitude towards the outgoing Board members for their willingness to generously nurture the 2U community.

Looking forward, I am energized by all of the ways that 2Uers are engaged in our community. Its wonderful to see individuals giving so spontaneously of their time and talents, in ways both big and small, and coming up with new and creative ways to draw us closer together and increase our impact in the world. Your loving kindness towards others is inspiring.

I'm excited to be working with the new team of Board Trustees. In addition to ensuring that we have a strong, vital, and enriching community at 2U, I want to continue to nurture our outreach and positive impact on the "larger world around us." Over the coming weeks, the new Board will be working on defining plans for the coming year. We will keep you informed when we have more to share. To ensure that the community continues to have open dialogue with the Board, please contact me (or anyone else on the Board) if you have any joys, questions, or improvement suggestions that you would like to inform the Board about.

And please consider attending an upcoming Board meeting; meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm - our next meeting is July 14th. Board meetings are open to anyone who wants to attend and we welcome your presence. (We usually have snacks too!)

With joy and gratitude,

Mark Sneathen
Chair of your Board of Trustees

DONATION NEEDED FOR THE NIGHT MINISTRY
boomboxIt is summer time and a lot of people are coming to the Night Ministry bus. It would be nice if we could offer, in addition to food and company, some music. We are looking for a CD player,  radio and speakers that we can use for this purpose. It needs to be fairly powerful as we have up to 100 people gathering.  Please let me know if you have something like this and would like to donate it.

Thank you. Vishnu.  vishnu@ouralife.com

NEW MEMBERS

Tom Kepler grew up in Evanston and attended the Unitarian Church there. He studied art at Columbia College and works as a graphic designer. He splits his time between web design and a family business which helps authors self-publish their books. In his free time, Tom enjoys music and plays the guitar, accordion, violin, and mandolin. He is married to Lizzie Kepler and they have a daughter, Nora, who is eight.

Katherine Wolf ("Katie") hails from Wheaton, IL. She attended Vassar College with a major in music and a minor in German. Katie moved back to Chicago and trained as an EMT but decided it was not her calling. She relocated for the summer to Vermont where she worked as stage crew for the Marlboro Music Festival. Now back in Illinois, she is a file clerk for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services while she ponders her next career move. Kate enjoys playing the organ and has joined the social justice committee at 2U. She was looking for a church and is happy to have found 2U.

Paul Konkoly was born in Dorog, Hungary. His family left during the 1956 revolution, when Paul was five, arriving in Chicago with the help of a Catholic organization. Paul grew up in Downer's Grove and studied for a time at Northern Illinois University. He is retired from a 25 year career as a telecommunications manager at one of the commodity exchanges in Chicago. Paul enjoys astronomy, all the many summer festivals offered in the city, and is passionate in his work to end the death penalty. He was active at both the Hinsdale Unitarian Church and the DuPage Unitarian Church. At 2U, Paul has been active in three small groups and is on the social justice committee. He is grateful the the spiritual support he receives at 2U.

Welcome to Tom, Katie, and Paul!!!
SAFE CONGREGATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT
The Safe Congregations Committee has been busily working this spring.  One of our tasks has been to review and rewrite the Safe Congregations policy.  The policy was originally written several years ago to keep our children safe from sexual predators.  Over time the policy has been expanded.  It currently is a mishmash of policies added, rewritten and even lifted from similar policies of other churches.  In many places it is redundant and inconsistent.

One goal is to rewrite the policy to improve clarity of intention.  This would include such things as who investigates a claim, what procedures to follow and the minister's role in the policy.  We also need to evaluate the language to include bullying in the policy.  An addition we would like to make provisions regarding the use of electronic media.  There are numerous other areas that need "tweaking."

The rewriting will take time.  We are hoping to have a rough draft by the August board meeting.  When we are completed the policy will be presented to the congregation for approval.  We know that whatever the policy, it will continue to change as the congregation grows and changes also.

Yours in the journey,
Lee-Ann Meredith
Chair of Safe Congregations Committee

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
icadpAnnual ICADP Meeting
featuring Scott Turow

The Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (ICADP) Annual Meeting will be held  Tuesday, July 13th at 6 pm at the Illinois State Bar Association Offices, 20 S. Clark St., Suite 900, Chicago, IL 60603.  Among the honorees will be the thirty-six Illinois state legislators who have cosponsored death penalty abolition bills.

Notable author and respected criminal attorney Scott Turow will also be honored for his outstanding work toward abolition.   He successfully represented death row inmates and wrote  Ultimate Punishment (2003) a non-fiction work  that reflects on how his views about the death penalty evolved. That evolution included serving on an influential fourteen member commission whose widely-read report detailed the problems with Illinois' death penalty system. The commission's report influenced Governor George Ryan's unprecedented commutation of the sentences of 164 death row inmates and the current moratorium on capital punishment.

The Annual Meeting is free to ICADP members and $40 for nonmembers. Please consider joining ICADP and attending the Annual Meeting.  To join ($40 for General and $20 Student) ICADP, please call  312-673-3816  or  sign up at their web site.

I hope you will join me at the meeting.  Please let me know if you plan to attend (cell: 312-350-0163 or e-mail: pkonkoly@yahoo.com).
