PREECLAMPSIA AWARENESS EFFORTS CONTINUE WITH 2U'S SIEGEL FAMILY
In December of 2009, 2U split its collection plate with the Preeclampsia Foundation, contributing nearly $900 to the organization's mission to reduce maternal and infant adverse outcomes due to preeclampsia. Even in the United States, women still die in childbirth and preeclampsia is a cause of death for 76,000 women and 500,000 babies each year.
brooklyn
2U members Jeff and Jill Siegel became intimately familiar with
the condition upon the birth of their daughter, Brooklyn, in 2004. Brooklyn was delivered 10 weeks early weighing only 2 lbs, 9 oz.; but did very well despite her tiny size. Jill's condition only
jill & Brooklyn
worsened, though, putting her life at serious risk. It would take 98 days of hospitalization and months of rehab for her to regain her ability to walk, talk, feed herself. . . and to even be able to contemplate her new role as a mother. Since her recovery, she and Jeff have worked to raise money and awareness for the Preeclampsia Foundation.

The Siegels next effort to support the Preeclampsia Foundation will occur on Sunday, May 23 at 10:00am when they help host the inaugural Chicago Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. The event will be held along the Midway Plaisance at the historic Lying-in Hospital on the U of C campus in Hyde Park (59th St. between Cottage Grove and Ellis). The Chicago Walk is part of an annual event, which happens around the country to support innovative research and raise public awareness about the warning signs of preeclampsia. In addition to the 1.5 mile child-friendly walk, the Chicago walk will include:
  • Proclamation from Mayor Daley that the 23rd is Preeclampsia Foundation Awareness Day in Chicago.
  • Words from Dr. Anita Blanchard of the University of Chicago (and obstetrician who delivered the Obama children!)
  • Silent auction and children's activities including face painting.
  • A special musical performance by 2U's own Carey Farrell.
The location of the Chicago Promise Walk has special meaning to this cause. The Lying-in Hospital is a special place here in Chicago waiting to promote and celebrate the news of a cause or cure for preeclampsia. Not many people probably know this or even notice it, but on the historic hospital building, stone plaques incorporated into the architecture of the building honor pioneers in the field of obstetric care. The careful observer will notice a conspicuously blank plaque on the façade facing the famous Midway Plaisance. That plaque has remained blank since the building was constructed in 1929 and is reserved for the name of the person who discovers the cause or cure for preeclampsia. There has yet to be a viable candidate to occupy that plaque - even though preeclampsia is a centuries-old condition.

If you are interested in registering to participant in the Walk, see Jeff or Jill or visit http://www.promisewalk.org/pfpw/CompleteRegistration.asp?fkroledescid=1. You can join the Siegel team by selecting "Flock of Siegels" from the pull-down menu.

If you can't make it on the 23rd, you can make a donation here to support Brooklyn's Walk effort:  http://www.promisewalk.org/pfpw/participantpage.asp?fundid=31&uid=83&fkroledescid=1&nnaffundid=9.

"If, by sharing my story and calling attention to the disorder, I can help arm another woman and her family against the risks that preeclampsia can bring, I will be very happy. It was upon my own initiative that I called my doctor to check on the results of my 24-hour urine tests - late on a Friday afternoon," Jill says. "If I hadn't, we might have lost precious hours and the opportunity to get those invaluable steroid shots for Brooklyn. I really feel like there is no good reason other than luck that things unfolded as they did. I have to put that good luck to use for others."

2UERS RALLY IN SPRINGFIELD DAY OF FAITH IN ACTION
On Wednesday, April 28, 150 leaders from Civic Action Network, a 2U partner organization, and Senior Network congregations converged on Springfield! The leaders rallied at the state capitol, joined by State Rep. Greg Harris, and met with elected officials, bringing them the message that people of faith across the state are fighting for meaningful nursing home reform, the rights of children of the incarcerated, and a responsible budget.
FITTS FUND RECIPIENT: LAKEVIEW ACTION COALITION
2U and the Lakeview Action Coalition Working Together to end Homelessness in the Community
The Lakeview Action Coalition (LAC) is a non-profit, multi-issue community organization, and is this month's Fitts Fund (split-plate collection) recipient. Proceeds will benefit LAC's continuing work to create and maintain more affordable housing, to advocate the human rights for homeless youth in the community, to provide access and equity in healthcare, and to promote environmental justice.

LAC has been working for the past 17 years to promote the cause of social justice in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, North Center, and other communities on the north side. Second Unitarian Church (2U) is a founding member institution that has been a valuable partner in LAC's work.

Working for justice in our world is a principle way for Unitarian Universalists to express our faith.  Acting on our values is what we do and who we are. For years members of our congregation have been standing and fighting for the rights of all people in our community. For instance, our congregation took the lead with LAC to bring a homeless shelter for women into Lakeview. The shelter's main goal is to end the cycle of homelessness through compassion and innovative programs.

By no means was it easy to establish this shelter in the community. 2U and LAC were up against a vociferous NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) neighborhood coalition that had the ear of the local alderman. But current and past members of 2U stood firm and reached out to others in the community to gain support for the shelter. In the end, the alderman, faced with growing community movement for a shelter, gave his support to lift up justice. And by doing so a whole community of volunteers now helps the shelter achieve its goals of stable housing, sustainable income, and greater self-determination for women and their families in Lakeview.

What this inspiring story signifies to me of our church's relationship with LAC is, as we walk the path toward justice; however, there will be great successes and there will be times of great challenges.  This is why we do not walk alone. Engage our UU faith as a source of strength and reflection for you and our church's social justice work.

Thank you for your contribution this month.

If you are interested in learning more about LAC's work and how to get involved in social change please join us: For a LAC Spotlight Luncheon on May 23, 2010 at 2U (after service).

2U PLANT AND SEED EXCHANGE
by Libby

Gardeners, here's a great way to trade in your extra plants and add a little variety to your garden. When you are reworking your garden over the next few weeks, take those extras, or divisions you were thinking about tossing and bring them to the 2U Plant Exchange! Bring your seeds. Don't have a yard? You can still get your hands in the dirt and come home with plants for your porch, window box or interior. Divide your houseplants. Pot up some annuals, herbs or veggies from seed. Come enrich your garden, home and soul, while getting to know other plant lovers. Details and date to be announced. Five dollar suggested participation donation.
