ORIENTATION TO 2ND UNITARIAN CHURCH
Second Unitarian Church would like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday, May 2, 11:45 - 1:45 p.m.!! This orientation will be facilitated by members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look like. Attending an orientation is one prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, please join us!

Snacks will be provided and childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or email the church at programs@secondunitarian.org. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you'd like to vote at the annual meeting, May 2 is the last day to sign the book.
FITTS FUND RECIPIENT: LAKEVIEW ACTION COALITION
2U and the Lakeview Action Coalition Working Together to end Homelessness in the Community
The Lakeview Action Coalition (LAC) is a non-profit, multi-issue community organization, and is this month's Fitts Fund (split-plate collection) recipient. Proceeds will benefit LAC's continuing work to create and maintain more affordable housing, to advocate the human rights for homeless youth in the community, to provide access and equity in healthcare, and to promote environmental justice.

LAC has been working for the past 17 years to promote the cause of social justice in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, North Center, and other communities on the north side. Second Unitarian Church (2U) is a founding member institution that has been a valuable partner in LAC's work.

Working for justice in our world is a principle way for Unitarian Universalists to express our faith.  Acting on our values is what we do and who we are. For years members of our congregation have been standing and fighting for the rights of all people in our community. For instance, our congregation took the lead with LAC to bring a homeless shelter for women into Lakeview. The shelter's main goal is to end the cycle of homelessness through compassion and innovative programs.

By no means was it easy to establish this shelter in the community. 2U and LAC were up against a vociferous NIMBY (not-in-my-backyard) neighborhood coalition that had the ear of the local alderman. But current and past members of 2U stood firm and reached out to others in the community to gain support for the shelter. In the end, the alderman, faced with growing community movement for a shelter, gave his support to lift up justice. And by doing so a whole community of volunteers now helps the shelter achieve its goals of stable housing, sustainable income, and greater self-determination for women and their families in Lakeview.

What this inspiring story signifies to me of our church's relationship with LAC is, as we walk the path toward justice; however, there will be great successes and there will be times of great challenges.  This is why we do not walk alone. Engage our UU faith as a source of strength and reflection for you and our church's social justice work.

Thank you for your contribution this month.

If you are interested in learning more about LAC's work and how to get involved in social change please join us: For a LAC Spotlight Luncheon on May 23, 2010 at 2U (after service).

LIFESPAN FAITH DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Meditation Workshop
Sunday, May 9, 2010, from noon to 2 pm, we will have a Meditation Workshop, facilitated by August Staas and Berlinda Brown.  This is a one-time event (not to be confused with the Mindfulness and Meditation small group beginning later in May.)  Come learn to releax, relieve stress, unfold your spiritual potential, and become one with the cosmos.  In the Spirit Play Room.

2U Movie Night: Frequency
What would you do if you could change the past? What if you could talk to someone you love...who has been dead for 30 years? And what was Jim Caviezel doing before he played Jesus?

For the answers to these questions, and many more, join us for 2U Movie Night on Friday, May 14.

2U Movie Night is sponsored by the Young Adult Ministry and open to all. We hope you'll join us!

It's not too late to join a small group and build new connections with your fellow 2Uers! The Thursday night small group, which begins meeting 5/20, is still accepting members. The group will meet from 7-8:45 pm on the near north side.

Would you like to spend more time with 2U's kids this summer? We need teachers for this summer's Dr Seuss based program. Summer is a great time to see if you enjoy teaching in our children's program because the classes are a bit more relaxed and you can commit to the number of Sundays that works best for you.

If you're interested in working with children aged infant to 3 years old now or this summer, you can make a big difference by volunteering in the Green Caterpillar Room. We're looking for volunteers who can spend as much as one hour a week or as little as one hour a month.
JOIN THE 40/40/40 PROJECT
by Libby

UUs across the continent are expanding Earth Day's 40th anniversary to last 40 days, from Sunday April 25 to Thursday May 27. How? By committing to small and large daily actions over the 40 days, for the sake of the Earth and all who live here. Some UUs are even taking small lifestyle changes for 40-day "test drives," knowing that our personal choices affect many aspects of global environmental justice. When 40 people in one congregation make 40-day commitments, that congregation receives special acknowledgement from the UUA's Ethical Eating Core Team.

April 25th has passed? Yes, you're right. This is such a great idea I didn't want to let that stop us. Check out the list of Sample Actions for adults, youth, and children, and many other 40/40/40 resources, at http://www.uua.org and enter 40/40/40 Project in the search engine. So far, we've signed up about twenty people. Help us make the 40 mark!

Near the conclusion of the 40 days, we'll gather to share stories-what we learned, what worked well and what did not, how our perspectives changed, and what comes next...as individuals and as a congregation.
2U PLANT AND SEED EXCHANGE
by Libby

Gardeners, here's a great way to trade in your extra plants and add a little variety to your garden. When you are reworking your garden over the next few weeks, take those extras, or divisions you were thinking about tossing and bring them to the 2U Plant Exchange! Bring your seeds. Don't have a yard? You can still get your hands in the dirt and come home with plants for your porch, window box or interior. Divide your houseplants. Pot up some annuals, herbs or veggies from seed. Come enrich your garden, home and soul, while getting to know other plant lovers. Details and date to be announced. Five dollar suggested participation donation.
