Generosity is a spiritual issue of the heart. A person cannot move toward spiritual maturity until he or she understands that "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:21

This is the time of year that members and friends of 2U spend reflecting on the importance of sharing our financial resources with the church we love. Stewardship, doing good with the resources you possess, is an integral part of opening hearts and hands to both give and receive. It is a commitment. Not as a consumer buys an automobile or sees a movie that fits their needs and preferences, but in the way that partners and parents and family and friends commit to each other-and stay committed-over the long term, sharing good times and bad.

Our congregation faces many challenges this year, and our financial resources matter now more than ever. It's an important part of recruiting an effective and experienced Interim Minister.  Without adequate funding, we can not care for our church building or fairly compensate our staff. Our finances support all the ministries of 2U, including social action, music, worship, religious education-and in the coming years, a seasoned, effective Settled Minister.

Stewardship is integral to our spiritual, ethical, and philosophical lives. Please search your hearts, lift up your voice, and support this 'community of ourselves.'

What's 2U Worth 2U?
by Neal

What do *you* pay for every month that means as much to you as 2U?
  • A "casual dining" meal for 4 once a week?
  • Two large coffee beverages from a chain coffee shop every workday?
  • Medium-tier cable TV for 3 sets plus broadband internet?
  • Gas, repairs, and insurance for a second car?
Many of us are willing to spend $170 per month -- $2,000 per year -- for each of these minor indulgences.

Don't panic! The Stewardship campaign is not coming for your cable box or your latte. You don't have to hide them when you host your small group. But if you can make room for any of this stuff in your budget, why not make a similar commitment to 2U, which gives you things that Comcast and Starbucks can't match: Real community, spiritual nourishment... and live music every week sung and played by people who love you.

As you consider your pledge for next year, think about that $170 (or $340, or $510, or...) per month. Given our budget and the size of our membership, those are the pledges we need from those who can to keep 2U open and thriving. When we make at least that kind of commitment to 2U, we're building a worthy foundation to lift up everyone's hard-earned, meaningful gifts, at every level.

Young Adult Ministry

Take out the Taboo, pick up the Pictionary, and bring on the
Bananagrams! The 2U Young Adult Ministry invites young adult members
and friends (between ages 18 and 35) to join us for a potluck dinner
and game night on Saturday, April 17 at the home of Arcenia Harmon at 7:30pm. For more information, stay tuned to our Yahoo! Group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/2uyoungadults.

The Young Adult Ministry works to create meaningful connections
between young adults at 2U and with the broader church community, and
to explore opportunities to serve both in the church and in the
community around us. Whether you've recently moved to Chicago, or if
you've been here all your life, our ministry recognizes and supports
the joys and challenges of the many new beginnings in the lives of
young adults at 2U. For more information contact the church office at programs@secondunitarian.org.

Small Group Ministry

Looking to connect with your fellow 2Uers on a deeper level and discuss interesting questions? Consider joining a small group. Registration for small groups will be on Sunday, April 18 and Sunday, April 25. Groups begin in May and meet for eight sessions. Got questions? Contact the church office at programs@secondunitarian.org.

Spring Clean-Up
SATURDAY APRIL 24, 2010, 10am - 2pm

Each year 2U encourages the congregation to help clean the church property in order to prepare for the summer season. This year we will gather on April 24th, 10 a.m. - 2pm, to sweep, dust, mop, and wash to enhance the interior of our building.

The church will provide the cleaning supplies, and all we need from you is to bring yourself and a smile. Please sign up at the What's Happening Table. For more information, contact the church office at programs@secondunitarian.org.

Lifespan Faith Development News

Would you like to spend more time with 2U's kids this summer?
We need teachers for this summer's Dr Seuss based program. Summer is a great time to see if you enjoy teaching in our children's program because the classes are a bit more relaxed and you can commit to the number of Sundays that works best for you.

If you're interested in working with children aged infant to 3 years old now or this summer, you can make a big difference by volunteering in the Green Caterpillar Room. We're looking for volunteers who can spend as much as one hour a week or as little as one hour a month.

Orientation to Second Unitarian Church

Second Unitarian Church would like to invite any and all visitors to the orientation we will be holding on Sunday, May 2, 11:45 - 1:45 p.m.!! This orientation will be facilitated by members of the 2U Membership Committee and will be an opportunity to share information about the rich history of UUism, the shared values of UUists, 2U's own role in the larger UU movement, and what membership at 2U can look like. Attending an orientation is one prerequisite for formalizing membership at 2U. So, whether you are a regular visitor who is ready to commit to membership, or you are a casual visitor who just wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism, please join us!

Snacks will be provided and childcare will be available upon request. To register, please sign-up at the What's Happening table at church (the big table in the middle of the Palmer Room) or contact the church office at programs@secondunitarian.org. We look forward to seeing you there!

latteCoffee Hour Hosts Needed!

Bring out your inner barista. . . or baker! Coffee Hour Hosts are needed to provide refreshments following Sunday services. Coffee generally brews during the service and some prep is required during the service. This is a great opportunity to support hospitality and community building within the church. If you are interested, please contact the church office at programs@secondunitarian.org.
